Even though there is almost unanimous consent that this book resembles Josh Lanyon's landmark Adrien English series, I think some doth protest too much because this one is similar in characters but lots more fun in a couple of respects.First of all, Sebastian Snow, for all the trouble he gets into and all the kinks in his brain, is an adorably cheeky character. His closeted, older, and supposedly ice-cold detective-pursuer-protector, Calvin Winter, is a neatly deconstructed semi-closeted ex-military who has a strict moral code--and weakness for helpless-looking, cheeky booksellers. He presents a nice counterbalance to Sebastian's increasingly estranged deeply-closeted detective boyfriend Neil, who really does provide some catalytic moments. The anchor here is Sebastian's father, who is neatly drawn and perfectly adept at solving everyone's problems with a word or two from his academic past. Most of all, this is all about Edgar Allen Poe, and if you know nothing or little about that great American man of letters, you will learn a great deal. And if you are a fan, you will see where this is going and get a kick out of it along the way.Even though I spotted the culprit immediately, I was happy to rollick along with this sometimes clueless bunch because this is such a neatly written, pleasantly satisfying, and fun book--and I just ordered the sequel.

2.5 starts rounded up to a 3.Sebastian the owner of an antique store is in a relationship with Neil a closeted police detective for 4 years. He's getting to the end of his rope waiting for Neil to step out of the closet. Just as he's decided that he's had enough things start happening around him regarding an auction that he participated in. In steps homicide detective Calvin another closeted detective. Murders, assaults and break-ins abound while Sebastian is instantly falling for Calvin.I liked the premise of the book but not so much the execution. I liked the mystery surrounding a possible rare Edgar Allan Poe book. I liked the wide range of characters, especially Max and Sebastian's dad. I didn't like that Sebastian was tired of being hidden but was willing to just jump into a relationship with another closeted cop while kicking Neil to the curb. I didn't like that Sebastian had sex with Calvin while still in a relationship with Neil. Cheating is a big No-No for me. I didn't like that Sebastian was being an amateur detective and causing more problems along the way. I didn't like that Calvin was instantly calling Sebastian intimate names but wasn't willing to be out with him.I'm hoping books 2 & 3 are a lot better.

Fantastic pacing! I really liked this book. I liked reading it. I liked not knowing what was going to happen next. That was fun for me.The perp I pegged, but I still wondered if I had the right of it.True, there are similarities to Josh Lanyon’s Adrien English Mysteries, but there are enough differences to make this book stand out on its own. (Although the character of Neil seemed too similar to Lanyon’s Jake).I really liked the MC whose POV we follow, Sebastian Snow. He’s a thirty something antiques dealer with an eye condition. He and Neil have been having issues for months due to Neil staying in the closet. Neither are happy.A nasty surprise in his store leads Sebastian to meet Det. Calvin Winters. Seb is instantly besotted with him. Murder, poetry, heartbreak, sleuthing, and a horrible date ensue and kept me swiping away until way past my bed time.I’m usually not a fan of the everyday citizen trolling about in police investigations, but here it worked for me. I’m looking forward to the next book to see how much further Poe can stray from Lanyon’s formula.

I absolutely adored this book. CS Poe's Sebastian Snow is a fantastic, well-developed character with quirks and intriguing motivations. I enjoyed his "home base" as an Antique dealer and his developing relationship with Detective Calvin Winter is going to be fantastic to watch in upcoming books. They had a great dynamic with enough push-pull to make things interesting. I really enjoyed reading this. I'm also very much looking forward to seeing what else CS Poe will be bringing to us in the future.Fantastically great writer with gorgeous characters and a tight, nice plot. All the makings of a wonderful relationship between an author and readers.

Five stars for mystery, five stars for the details of Seb's disability, particularly the joking, four stars for romance, five stars for the writing quality, and five stars for each of these two characters. I am really glad I bought the second book already.I am visually impaired, very differently from Sebastian, but yes, some similarities. And a lot of sympathy, and LOL's that he can joke about it.My one quibble is something another reviewer noted: the early and continuous endearments were excessive, and at least in this book we don't have any reason Calvin would do that. I am hoping for a revelation in book 2.

I really enjoyed the mystery in this novel. It was not easy to solve so I was kept guessing. I am already rereading and listening to it again to pick up things I missed the first time through. And I liked the characters. I like Sebastian and his dad and his dad's dog. I like Calvin. I liked Neil after he was no longer Sebastian's partner. Sure Sebastian does dumb things in his pursuit of satisfying his curiosity and desire to solve the mystery but he is an amateur. He is actually quite intelligent when he is not being too impulsive. The description of his medical ailment is quite interestimg. The author did her research.A good traditional mystery with a sweet gay romance.
