What Were the Twin Towers?   It was a perfect end-of-summer morning in New York City. The sky was a clear, rich blue and there were no clouds.   At the tip of Manhattan, by 8:20 a.m., people were streaming in from subways and from Staten Island ferryboats. The World Trade Center’s Twin Towers gleamed in the sunlight. The North Tower and the South Tower. Some office workers lingered in the tree-lined plaza at the base of the buildings.   Many people were already upstairs at their desks starting work. At the famous Windows on the World restaurant, several companies were hosting business breakfasts. The restaurant was in the North Tower, on the 106th and 107th floors. The view was spectacular that morning. Diners could see more than fifty miles in any direction.   It was just another normal morning. Then at 8:46, everything changed. People on the street heard a roar. They looked up to see a jet airplane overhead. It was flying low, dangerously low. And it was heading straight toward the North Tower. In a matter of seconds, it slammed into floors ninety-three through ninety-nine.   This was the first blow of a terrible attack on the United States of America. In the next seventy-seven minutes, a second plane hit the South Tower. A third plane flew into the Pentagon building just outside of Washington, DC. A fourth plane crashed in central Pennsylvania. Everyone in all four planes was killed, including the nineteen men who had hijacked the flights and carried out the attacks.   By 10:28 that morning, both towers had collapsed, killing 2,606 innocent people. Another 125 died at the Pentagon. In all, 2,977 died on September 11, 2001, counting the passengers and crew on all four planes.   In the months and years that followed, there would be more victims. Many were rescue workers—police officers and firefighters—as well as construction workers who came to clean up the site. They became sick from breathing the polluted air while working at Ground Zero. That became the name for the area where the Twin Towers had once stood.   Why were the Twin Towers targeted? Who was behind the attack? And how did that terrible day change the United States?       Chapter 1: Money, Money, Money    More than any other city in the United States, New York has always been a center of business. In America in the 1600s and 1700s, many colonies were founded by groups seeking religious freedom. But not New York. It began as a Dutch trading post called New Amsterdam. Its purpose was to make money.   The Dutch took advantage of the large natural harbor that stayed ice-free all winter. This meant that ships with cargo could come and go all year. And the Hudson River, to the west of New Amsterdam, offered a route to fur trading posts farther inland.   The British forced the Dutch out of New Amsterdam in 1664 and renamed it New York. They stayed over a hundred years, until the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783. After that, New York City became the trading center of a new, young country: the United States of America.   Manhattan, where New York City began, is an island. Because of that, over time six bridges as well as four tunnels—two under the East River and two under the Hudson—were constructed to connect Manhattan to mainland areas. Many of these transportation routes are overseen by an agency called the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. It has control over the port, covering a twenty-five-mile circle, with the Statue of Liberty at the center. Tolls from bridges and tunnels provide the money for more new projects. In the middle of the twentieth century, the Port Authority headed the biggest building project in New York’s history—the construction of two skyscrapers, each 110 stories. They were the tallest buildings on the planet—at least for a while.

My daughter, who is now an adult, visited the Twin Towers a number of times as a child, and had a very hard time with what happened in 2001. She was about 10 then and at her age it was an information over load. I think it is important for children today to know what the Twin Towers were and why they are an important piece of history, but the information has to be presented properly. The author of this book has done an awesome job of presenting the history of the towers, from dream to reality, along with the history of what happened to them in 2001. It is informative, but not overly graphic or sensationalized. And, he even includes information on the construction of the towers and how the builders overcame problems during construction. This is an excellent book that should be in every school library in the country and in the home library of any child that is curious about the towers and what happened to them on 9/11.

Very factual presentation of information. The illustrious history of these New York landmarks, whose contemporary legacy is so complicated and tragic, is dealt with by a deft hand, providing the necessary information for my rather astute nine year old while not scaring him. This tome, read independently but discussed, allowed for fruitful conversation and afforded me the opportunity to hear insight and fears I wasn't aware my son had. Highly recommend.

This whole series of books is just wonderful. Pick a topic that your child is or might be inteterested in and these books draw them right in. My son has been reading them since second grade (end of third now) and he still anxiously awaits them as I buy new. They are by far his favorite series and in my opinion so much better than the other silly/gross/obnoxious series out there.

My son is in third grade and read this book and loved it. He learned so much and was able to tell me all about it.

Bought this for our son before we visited NYC. It was good for him to have a touching background written for children.

I think this book should be read by 8+ because some times in it has scary elements in the book. I also it is a very good book I think other people would loveit.

It's a very good book to read, very easy to understand and interesting.

my kids all love the who/what was series.

In this second edition, Alexander has not only included developments in digital storytelling that postdate the first edition, but he also appears to have incorporated feedback, criticism, and commentary from the previous release. Those readers looking for a textbook approach to digital storytelling will find this book disappointing and possibly frustrating, as will those looking for a linear path in the text. Alexander's literary style is, unsurprisingly, very much like his oratorical delivery -- rambling, discursive, and punctuated with cultural and literary references. His style is also, for the audience that either shares or could share his romantic perspective on story, infectious. He obviously loves his topic and in the course of the volume tells the story of digital storytelling and his own story of falling in love with it. As such, this is not an abstract, objective, or coldly rational portrayal of the academic subject but a reference-rich and personal retelling.

The New Digital Storytelling is Stevo's Business Book of the Week for the week of 7/31, as selected by Stevo's Book Reviews on the Internet.

Ole Begemann is a freelance app developer, writer, and occasional technical editor. He's been writing about Swift on his blog since the language was first released. Through a strange combination of attention-seeking and shyness, the author prefers to remain anonymous.

I'm a bit torn. The book has some amazing content. But it makes for quite a hard read as the difficulty level varies dramatically from page to page. I feel as if the authors got tired of explaining things at low levels at times and just said "screw it, we'll just hope they understand."For example, the book early on explains what an array is. It shows you how to define an array with:let fibs = [0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5]and describes some properties such as first, last, etc. Extremely basic content like this. You get a bit bored at times going through the pedantry that surely shouldn't be mentioned in a book titled "Advanced Swift."Then later on, the authors explicitly mention that the protocol chapter will include information about constraints, type erasure and associated types. Great. I don't know much about those concepts, but I'll be sure to learn them when we get there. But for some reason, he then decides he's just going to go ahead and structure his examples using these concepts anyways even though he hasn't taught them yet...Furthermore, one section in the String chapter, the author decides "bitcast" is common knowledge to readers who weren't familiar with what an array was when they opened the book. Upon looking it up, I found that it is a term specific to LLVM. He then uses COpaquePointers, unsafeBitCast, an ~ operator, a << operator and various other things I've never heard of after reading the official Swift guide multiple times as well as various other Swift books. So while the parts I do understand tend to be very valuable material, I find myself spending more time reading other blogs and definitions trying to understand the things the book is trying to teach me than I am actually reading the book itself. In the past 10 pages of reading this book, I found myself spending two to three hours reading about regular expressions, some C pointer concepts, LLVM and some other topics. Meanwhile, I spent about 20 minutes actually reading the book and learned mostly from other sources. When the book hits, it's quite good. The collections chapter taught me quite a bit about how Generators, Sequences and Collections work for Swift. Nothing was really out of place. But since then, the assumed knowledge has been quite sporadic.

This book is really a masterpiece. Reminds me of other advanced books from years ago like Effective C++ and Effective Perl Programming. It contains such great explanations of the advanced features of the language and is strictly committed to an idiomatic Swift syntax--highlighting key differences between Swift and other languages that really set Swift apart. I have been doing Swift development from day one and haven't looked back--yet this book has filled in many gaps in my understanding that I didn't realize were there. When I read the chapter on optionals for example, I thought I would just breeze through it since I knew everything about them--or so I thought. I was wrong. Lots of really good insight in that chapter alone. And it just gets better from there.I am giving the book 5 stars based on the content alone since it is so rich. I will, however, mention and this is more of a shame-on-you in the publishing realm--there are widows and orphans in the code snippets. A code block will begin with a single line at the end of one page (widow) and complete on the next page (forcing me to flip back and forth to get the gist of the snippet). Or the code block will almost all finish on one page and one line will appear on the next (orphan). I realize this is a nit and I can live with it, but I would get that fixed in the publishing for a future release as it would improve the experience.Last point--and this is more of a general complaint about Kindle books. While it was nice that I was able to get the Kindle version for free here on Amazon after purchasing the print version, the code layout in Kindle is (still) abysmal. It's very challenging to read code coherently. I started reading the book on the Kindle since I was able to download it and start reading immediately, but I kept running into issues trying to read the code examples and just gave up--preferring to wait for the print version to arrive. Amazon really needs to figure out the disconnect between the correctly formatted content technical book writers provide and the Kindle output of code. It's my experience that most (if not all) Kindle formatted technical books are this way. It's a shame this hasn't been resolved. It's not like this is a new problem.

This book will teach you how things work under the hood.I hated not understanding Swift implementation/interface files, this book teaches you the concepts needed to understand how most if not all swift code works. Some people complain that the book is hard to understand but there are hundreds of beginner books and only a couple of advanced books.Once you get to a certain level you realize that the beginner books are not very helpful in real world situations. There is more of a demand for beginner books so the author is really doing us a favor.Problems:So far I found one typo, in the Collections chapter.I bought this book a bit late therefore I have to keep parallel xCode apps installed.

Lucid and clear. Instead of getting lost in the details the authors do a great job of communicating how to "think in swift". I cant recommend it highly enough.

Excellent book for anyone who wants to dive deeper into Swift. Covers collections, error handling, generics protocols and more. It goes in depth into many practical topics, for instance, why you would use generics over protocols and vice versa. Well written and completely up to date with changes in Swift 3.0.

Great guide through some of Swift's advanced concepts.

Very informative and engaging read. It has already started to impact the way in which i develop swift based systems and I would highly recommend it.

This Coffee 2019 Mini Wall Calendar is not the usual mini size and not the normal calendar size but right in-between the two sizes. The coffee photos for each month are great! However, it is the first Wall Calendar I ever bought that doesn't have a hole already in it to hang it on the wall. I had to measure the calendar to find the center and hammer a nail through it to create the hole to hang it on my wall!

Cute calendar!
