I only made half way through, before I realized I was completely checking out every time I tried to listen (I got the Audible version). I feel as if this course should be titled "The Literature Surrounding the Masters of Greek Thought."I was anticipating the instructor to present a survey of the actual thought of these three philosophical titans. Rather, he spent all his time (as far as I could endure) not doing that, in fact, and basically took the listener on a tour of the material written by/or about these thinkers. It was incredibly dissatisfying to hear the Professor rehash the writings of Plato on Socrates, while only flirting with what those writings could teach us about what Socrates actually thought. Moving on the Plato, the same thing happened. He scanned some of the Dialogues, but never came around to the Plato's actual philosophy. It was like watching a dance. So infuriatingly tantalizing and sadly unfulfilling that I couldn't go on.Maybe one day I'll be able to revisit and pick up where I left off and see if he has anything substantive to say, at least, about Aristotle.I gave two stars for the sake of the Professor. I liked his pace and delivery, and he surely knows his stuff. I just think this Course needs to be retitled and redescribed.

An excellent introduction to the Greek greats. I’m studying these lessons in preparation for a class in an MLA program and it has proven very helpful.PS. People who write bad reviews because of the musical intro to the program —done by the producer —hurt the rating for the scholar who prepared the lessons. If you dislike the music intro, contact The Great Courses. Those horns are their trademark and appear in every single course they sell.

I found this course useful as a counterpoint to my undergraduate course, though I'm not sure it’s the right first course for those interested in philosophy. (Disclaimer: I bill myself as a mathematical Platonist, but that term is not terribly accurate.) Professor Bartlett’s lectures were valuable to me in making up the gaps in my education, with his emphasis on politics, theology, and history; in particular, starting with Aristophanes and Xenophon was brilliant, though I do wish he’d at least mentioned the title of Libanius’ “On the Silence of Socrates.” My professor was dismissive of Xenophon, and overly focussed on modern philosophical concerns. So Professor Bartlett’s focus on the Socratic Turn (away from much of why Whitehead called Western philosophy a series of footnotes to Plato) was valuable for me, but renders it unsuitable as a general introduction to ancient philosophy. His exposition of how much Plato’s metaphysics relied on his theology is also a useful warning to those tempted to apply Plato to modern analytic philosophy.

I found these lectures to be clear and engaging. Really enjoyed listening to them--better than what I remember from College!

This is supposed to be an audible BOOK. But, at the beginning of every single chapter, the listener is blasted by loud, Masterpiece-theater type horns that jolted me out of my seat. I listen to books for the quietness of the experience as much as the information. The musical interludes are loud, grating, pretentious, and silly. Thankfully, Audible allows for customers to return poor productions, and I returned this. As soon as the publisher gets rid of that infernal music between chapters, I will give it another try.

Just what I wanted and delivered as expected (on time).
