I studied exclusively from this book for the ADEX Diagnostic Skills exam. Though the book is out of print and the information is a little dated, there are few, if any, questions from the Diagnostic Skills exam that aren't covered many times and in many ways through the book. Dental Decks help, but their knowledge base is much to broad. This is considerably more focused and will structure your studying for the written exam!

I bought this to help me study for NERB. It's a bit out dated, but helps as a source of practice questions when studying for the NERB written.

Great resource for part II dental boards. Many of the questions were seen on the exam almost identical to questions reviewed in the book.

This is a great book to get you warmed up. It covers many of the topics that are covered on the boards and if you find that time is short and that you were unable to prepare for the exam this is the book to use as a last resort.

As far as I know, this is the number one book that is being used by just about every dental scholar in preparation for the CRDTS Dental Boards. I have seen many questions taken word for word from that text into the computerized CRDTS test. It would also work for the WREB.s to a slightly less degree. Thumbs up!

I'm trying to alternate between fun audiobooks and ones that I feel I should read rather than having any desire to do so. Plato's Republic was in that second group. I honestly expected to hate it. But it's one of the fundamental classics. So on the list it goes to listen to while I commute. And I loved it. It may have been that it was a full cast audio but it honestly did feel like being with a group. Maybe a quarter of the way in I realized what it reminded me of: when you are at a very mellow party in college and people start discussing things that are really "deep, man." And there's that one person who is way too into it and dominates the conversation. So that tickled me most of the book. The other thing that was really engaging was how much of the ideas in this book can be seen in the modern world. In that way it made it feel like an anthropological study and it kept making me say, "neat," even when I disagreed with whatever point was being made. Overall I would recommend this audiobook version because it made it come alive.

Whew, that was an intense read! I gave five stars because after careful consideration I realized that Alan Blooms interpretive essay really helped me to understand the The Republic to a different degree. The first ten books are the shoes, the interpretive essay is the shoe lace and it ties all of it up very neatly. To read something over 2,000 years old that’s been translated from Ancient Greek is a task in itself, I commend this translations interpreter he did a stellar job. This book is Heavy and not a book you can just pick up and expect to read in a weekend, its not littered with images that create a perfect picture for you to burn thru, it’s page after page after page of thought, so it slows you down, a lot. Each page forces you to think about what you’re reading, sometimes you have ZERO Idea and that’s ok, that’s where Bloom’s Interpretive Essay comes in. To pick up this book and commit to finishing it is a Challenge I highly recommend, you’ll walk away a better person with a sense of accomplishment and more thoughtful mind. I’ve read over 200 books and I think it’s safe to say that this was the most challenging book I’ve ever put my mind too, if your looking for a challenge then you’ve found it. Happy reading 📖

While the book was written in 380 BCE it is, perhaps, more relevant today than at any time in its history. You would almost think that Plato had pulled a Dr. Who and transported himself to 2018 before sitting down to write. It couldn’t be more tailored to the political, social, and economic environment in which we currently find ourselves.Plato/Socrates use elenctic (i.e. Socratic) questioning to explore human happiness and the specific virtue of justice. Socrates believed: “by curing people of the hubris of thinking they know when they do not…makes them happier and more virtuous than anything else.”Socrates and his friends pursue this journey by defining the ideal city – Kallipolis—and its rulers and constitution, the idea being that truth is often easier to discern on a large scale (i.e. a city) that can then be applied on a smaller scale (i.e. the individual).The debate focuses on the four virtues of an ideal city—wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice. And results in the conclusion that the human soul is made up of three parts—the appetitive, spirited, and rational—and that virtue, ultimately proven to be the source of happiness exists when the three are in balance and harmony.Socrates ultimately defines five political/economic models—philosopher/king, timocracy, oligopoly, democracy, and tyranny. And he ranks them, from good to bad, in the order listed, essentially arguing that they form an inverse ladder in which one inevitably deteriorates into the latter.That means, in essence, that oligopoly inevitably deteriorates into democracy, which he clearly doesn’t not hold in very high esteem. Freedom, by his logic, is unsustainable. In the simplest terms, the unfettered pursuit of freedom by everyone ultimately leads to conflict and that, in turn, inevitably leads to a race for power defined by manipulation, deception, and injustice.As a result, democracy inevitably leads to tyranny as the ruling class preys—quite deceitfully—on the fears of the masses that they, the masses, are being sidelined and their interests ignored. Sound familiar?The elenctic, commonly known as the Socratic method, has been largely stripped from our political and academic discourse. People are sure of what they know and don’t want to know anything else. The thirst for victory has, as a result, crushed the thirst for knowledge.There are many reasons for this. Technology, which gave rise to the echo chamber, has certainly contributed. Impatience has also played a big role. Elenctic takes time and our collective attention spans have dwindled to near nothing. Education, I believe Plato would say, however, is probably the real culprit. Oppression, sheltering, and victimization have replaced Plato’s definition of the ideal education: physical training, musical training (including prose and speech), mathematics, and dialectic.On the surface, critics will find no shortage of targets in the logic. More than anything else, however, both the argument and any criticism that might be drawn, reflect the imprecision of language itself and the difficultly this presents for philosophers willing to tackle the biggest and most relevant issues of life.That, however, simply reinforces Plato’s encouragement to ask more questions, listen more attentively with an open mind, and never assume you know the real answer. Which is why his ultimate encouragement it seems to me is not to admire things that are beautiful or just, but to truly understand what beauty and justice are. Sadly, I can think of no leader today who is doing anything even remotely close to that.Read it. It will make you a better leader, citizen, parent, friend, and person.

Plato’s Republic (Greek: Πολιτεία, Politeia; Latin: Res Publica) was written in 380 BC and this version was translated by Benjamin Jowett in 1871. It is a fiction book in the format of a discussion between Socrates and others. It aims to debate and conclusively determine the meaning of Justice. Socrates, the main character, was a Greek philosopher and the mentor of Plato. His philosophy is the basis and origin of the western philosophy. As a high schooler who often debates similar ideals and questions, I found this book to be very eye-opening and fascinating. Socrates doctrine proves itself true even in this day in age. That just goes to show, when it comes to ideals and behavior, humans haven’t changed very much. Republic is very well written and even after thousands of years it still captures its audience with its provoking revelations and relatable content. If you often find yourself debating similar questions then you might just find your answers here, but if you dislike philosophy or are set in your ways you probably will not find this book to be interesting. For me, this book was an enjoyable challenge and I definitely would read it again.

This Kindle edition is not as advertised and entirely useless. First and foremost, it is absolutely not an annotated edition; there is not a single note anywhere in the text. For that matter, there are no Stephanus numbers—the universal page numbers for all editions of Plato—so you will never be able to either cite this edition or find anything referred to by other writers. I'm not even sure that this is the Reeves/Grube translation, as there is no publication information whatsoever. Avoid this like the Athenian plague.

Like the individuals profiled in The Road to Character, David Brooks's book is flawed, but not without its redeeming qualities. Brooks wants to recover the "eulogy virtues," noting that the "resume virtues," while they tend to be more highly valued in modern culture, tend not to produce "deep satisfaction." To this end, he profiles a wide variety of individuals. It's a varied group; I wonder if there's ever been a book to feature St. Augustine, civil rights leader A. Philip Randolph, and Joe Namath? As you might expect, if you've read Brooks's other books or New York Times editorials, he is a colorful story teller and brings the subjects to life.The variety and quality of the individuals about whom Brooks writes is the first problem I have with The Road to Character. As individual pieces, the biographical essays are okay, but they didn't adhere to one another the way I think Brooks wanted them to. The result is a loosely assembled structure, not a finely honed argument. Further, while his subjects demonstrated admirable character traits, too many of them had an overall character that I would not want to emulate (and some that I definitely would reject as an example). That's part of his point, too. As he says, "The good news of this book is that it is okay to be flawed, since everyone is."There are plenty of bright spots, worthy of reflection, in The Road to Character. One of my favorites, since it reminded me of something my parents always told me, the third of four children, was "The more you love, the more you can love. A person who has one child does not love that child less when the second and third child come along. . . . Love expands with use."So in spite of writing about some people I didn't end up liking, Brooks's overall project comes through. Dignity, love, self-control, and, most of all, selflessness are character traits anyone can agree are worthy of pursuing, no matter your cultural or religious preferences. I’m a student of moral development, so the idea that a scholar devoted himself to the root of character development pulled me into this book.I was grateful for the multiple vignettes on various men and women who found themselves on their path to maturity and ultimately character. It was difficult to follow the theme at times, but that was part of the charm of this book — I found myself getting immersed in each real-life story.The author returns often to the Protestant ethic...one that believes we are inherently flawed and cannot be made whole on our own. I share this ethic, but I was disappointed how forceful the author was at pointing it out (too often). It would have been more effective to allow the reader to arrive at these concepts on his/her own.The last chapter effectively summarizes the author’s intent, that pride is the root of all that undermines character, and humility is the root of the development of it.I highly recommend this book to any student of moral development. While morality is can be found on many paths, this one quote from the book is the common denominator:“Character is built in the course of your inner confrontation. Character is a set of dispositions, desires, and habits that are slowly engraved during the struggle against your own weakness.”

I typically work with five pages of detailed notes when reviewing a book but found myself with twenty-one pages for this review.Brooks has written a gem of a book, one that raises the bar for future discussions of “character”. It takes time to absorb and savor. Brooks says publicly that he wrote this book to save his own soul.“The Road to Character” is about the cultural shift from the “little me” to the “BIG ME,” from a culture that encourages people to think humbly of themselves to a culture that encourages people to see themselves as the center of the universe. This cultural shift encourages us to think about having a great career but leaves nothing for us to develop an inner life and character. For Brooks, we have lost our way to “being good” and “doing good.”Brooks frames the discussion by contrasting “resume virtues” - those skills that one brings to the job market that contribute to external success – with “eulogy virtues” – those that are at the core of our being like courage, honesty, loyalty, and the quality of our relationships that contribute to real joy. These are embodied in two competing parts, Adam I and Adam II, of our nature that are a constant source of contradiction and tension.Adam I is the external Adam. He wants to build, create, produce and discover things. He is characterized by actively seeking recognition, satisfying his desires, being impervious to the moral stakes involved. He has little regard for humility, sympathy, and honest self-confrontation, which are necessary for building character. He wants to have high status, win victories, and conquer the world.Adam II is the internal Adam. He wants to embody certain moral qualities. He wants to love intimately, to sacrifice self in the service of others, to live in obedience to some transcendent truth, and to have a cohesive inner soul that honors creation in one’s own possibilities. Adam II is charity, love, and redemption.Adam I is at work in today’s “BIG ME” culture. “Big Me” messages are everywhere; you are special; trust yourself; and be true to yourself. This ‘Gospel of Self’ begins with childhood when awards and rewards are given for just being, not doing. “We are all wonderful, follow your passion, don’t accept limits and chart your own course.”This has led to an ethos based on a “ravenous hunger in a small space of self-concern, competition, and a hunger for distinction at any cost,” an ethos where envy has replaced admiration. This self-centeredness leads to several unfortunate directions: selfishness, the use of other people as a means to an end, seeing oneself as superior to everyone else, and living with a capacity to ignore and rationalize one’s imperfections and inflate one’s virtues.The “BIG ME” culture distorts the purpose of our journey and the meaning of life. “Parts of themselves go unexplored and unstructured. They have a vague anxiety that their life has not achieved its ultimate meaning and significance. They live with unconscious boredom, not really loving, and unattached to the moral purpose that gives life it’s worth. They lack the internal criteria to make unshakable commitments. They never develop inner constancy, the integrity that can withstand popular disapproval or a serious blow. They foolishly judge others by their abilities and not by their worth. This external life will eventually fall to pieces.”In this increasingly “BIG ME” culture, Brooks became haunted by the voices of the past and the quality of humility and character they exhibited. People in the past guarded themselves against some of their least attractive tendencies to be prideful, self-congratulatory, and hubristic. “You would not even notice these people. They were reserved. They did not need to prove anything in the world.” They embodied humility, restraint, reticence, temperance, respect, and soft discipline. “They radiated a sort of moral joy. They answered softly when challenged harshly. They were silent when unfairly abused, dignified when others tried to humiliate them, and restrained when others tried to provoke them…But they got things done. They were not thinking about what impressive work they were doing. They were not thinking about themselves at all. They just seemed delighted by the flawed people around them. They made you feel funnier and smarter when you spoke with them. They moved through all social classes with ease. They did not boast. They did not lead lives of conflict-free tranquility but struggled towards maturity. These people built a strong inner character, people who achieved a certain depth. They surrendered to the struggle to deepen their soul.”Brooks highlights the lives of prominent and influential people - Francis Perkins, Dwight Eisenhower, Dorothy Day, George C. Marshall, A. Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin, George Eliot, St. Augustine, Samuel Johnson, Michel de Montaigne – to articulate the diverse roads taken by a diverse set of people, white and black, male and female, religious and secular, literary and non-literary. Not one of them was even close to perfect. They were acutely aware of their own weaknesses and they waged an internal struggle against their sins to emerge with some measure of self-respect..“The Road to Character” is a “road less traveled.” It involves moments of moral crisis, confrontation, and recovery. To go up, one first has to go down (The “U Curve”); one must descend into the valley of humility to climb to the heights of character. Only then will one have the ability to see their own nature, their everyday self-deceptions, and shatter all Illusions of self-mastery.Humility is central to the journey. Humility leads to wisdom, a moral quality of knowing what you don’t know and finding a way to manage ignorance, uncertainty, and limitation. It offers freedom…freedom from the need to prove your superiority. Alice had to be small to enter Wonderland. “Only the one who descends into the underworld rescues the beloved.”The paradox for Adam I is that he cannot achieve enduring external success unless he builds a solid moral core as sought by Adam II. Without inner integrity, your Watergate, your scandal, your betrayal, will eventually happen. Adam I versus Adam II, Adam I ultimately depends on Adam II.Brooks wrote this book to learn who has traveled this road to character, and what it looks like. He found you cannot be the good person you want to be unless you wage this campaign against self. I highly recommend this book as one of the most profound books published this year.End note: Brook’s sections on love and suffering are excellent.
