This is the second volume of Lee Ness' study of the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II. This volume provides a survey of Japanese army weapons and equipment. This is the first English-language book in many years to deal with this subject. Most earlier books were a simple re-hash of wartime intelligence manuals. Ness' book is a major step forward in detailing IJA weapons and is based on a great deal of new research. To begin with, it examines a much broader swath of weapons and equipment than the old wartime manuals. Aside from obvious subjects such as small arms, field artillery and tanks, it also covers many overlooked areas such as combat engineer equipment, air defense radars, coastal defense weapons, chemical weapons and communication equipment. In addition, it covers subjects that were only vaguely understood in the 1945 manuals such as Japanese rocket weapons. The treatment of the individual subject areas is not limited to a simple technical description. They provide a deeper context about the development and deployment of the weapons, and for the first time, provide a considerable amount of production data on the weapons. The photo content is fresh and interesting, but reproduction quality is not the best due to the use of soft paper. Overall, this book is a giant step forward in detailing the IJA of World War II, and a "must-have" for anyone interested in the IJA or in WWII weapons.

This is the second volume in Leland Ness's excellent study of the Imperial Japanese Army and is devoted to Japanese weapons and weapons systems of all kinds. Previously the best book on this subject was the U.S. Army's Handbook on Japanese Military Forces, a wartime intelligence manual subject to the limitations of information available at the time. Using a wide variety of newly discovered documents, Mr. Ness has broadened the scope of those wartime efforts and has provided us with a virtually complete and accurate description and evaluation of many Japanese weapons both those well known and many less so. He provides in many cases production and development information not available elsewhere. Mr. Ness has also drawn on Japanese language sources and has had the book vetted by experts in Japan. This is a valuable reference of interest to both the casual reader and the military specialist and I expect it to be the standard work on this topic for many years to come. I strongly recommend it and suggest that it should be a part of any book collection dealing with the IJA and the IJN.

It seems a complete, but rather basic, look at the weapons & related Japanese equipment used during WW2. It starts with submachine guns & progresses thru artillery to AFVs, to engineering & signals equipment, & about everything in between. Surprisingly there is no information on pistols. We get a 340 page effort with pictures throughout, but they're not very big & the paper is only a step or two up from newsprint. The main information sources are U.S. intelligence reports on said equipment. Table of Contents, List of Illustrations, List of Table, & a Glossary start the book, followed by 23 Chapters dividing equipment by type & ending with Bibliography. There's little information generally available on Japanese ground equipment, so this book is a welcome addition to help identify that odd artillery piece in that picture that's in the "Misc. Japanese" folder on your hard drive.

Very detailed review of infantry weapons of WWII Japanese forces. Some repetition. Becomes tedious with perhaps too much details. Editorial comments on weapons, judging them to be difficult to use or not efficient, Leaves me thinking that the author either judges too harshly or the Japanese troops were vastly superior to be able to fight and win battles with them. Worth the read to add to my knowledge of WWII Japanese weapons.

I think this is a great book.Covers all Imp.japanese weapon systems.I didn't know the Japanese had 2types of knee mortors.Also their rockets and launching systems were crude ,very crude.Some of the artillery,I'D have been afraid to pull the lanyard on.Another thing very noticeable deficiencywas no semiautto.rifle like M1 or MI CAR.And the armor of coarse,crude,crude and more crude.All in all,an enlightening read. This provided good coverage of Japanese weapons and equipment for the World War II period. While it did cover the basic infantry, artillery and tank systems, it also provided good insight into such topics as radar system, radio communications and engineer systems. While pictures were provided on most weapon systems more detailed images would have been preferred

Mr. Ness did a great job writing this book. It has tremendous depth about the Imperial Japanese weaponry describing not only the technical details about rifles, canons and equipment but also in what relationship it was used. I highly recommend this to everyone who wants to know with what kind of equipment the IJA was able to conquer such vast land in the 1930 and the beginning of the 1940.

Very informative, clarifies many things, good input for making a miniature Japanese force.

When I was a kid, my dad would read Jack and the Beanstalk to my brother and me. He has a boomy voice and could Fee Fi Fo Fum like nobody's business. Well, I wanted to have that memory with my son, too, so I got him this book for Christmas.The book itself is only O.K. The story line is the same as the old classic, but the dialog and narration fall flat. For instance, when Jack first climbs up the beanstalk, the narration is as follows:"Without waking his mother, Jack started climbing the beanstalk. His arms and legs began to ache, but he forgot about them when he saw the castle."Then he knocks. There is no sense of awe or adventure. The passage sounds more like an afternoon stroll to the neighbor's house.Also, each time after the first that the male giant enters the scene, his "Fee Fi Fo Fum" line gets shorter. The second time, it ends before "Be he alive," and the third time, his wife cuts him off with, "Yeah, yeah, yeah." For me, that ruined the immersion in a fantastical world, and left me disappointed.This is Jack, but it's not the rich, immersive Jack from your childhood. You would be wise to find a better version.

I thought this was a great version of the story with great graphics. I used to tell this story from memory to my 2 yr old daughter and it's all she wanted to hear about, so I thought I'd look for a book. This story was pretty much the same one, had more details than what I remembered, but good details. For those interested (since it's not real clear), here is a summary of how this specific book tells the story:-Jack and his mom (who is out of work) are poor and decide to sell their cow-Jack goes to sell it but is met by a man on the way who trades the cow for magic beans-Jack's mom gets angry and throws the beans out the window, resulting in a beanstalk-Jack climbs the beanstalk to find a castle-The female giant agrees to let Jack work for some money, but warns him that her husband will want to eat him if he gets caught-Jack steals some gold coins from the male giant while he is sleeping (which the giant stole from Jack's village in the first place)-Jack goes back up a second time and steals the goose that lays the golden eggs-Jack goes up a third time to steal the singing harp, against his mother's request, which ends up waking up the giant, who chases jack down the beanstalk-Jack and his mom chop down the beanstalk, destroying the giant

I purchased this book because I enjoyed it going up and I read it to my children. Now I'm a grandma and decided to start reading to my grandchildren and they love it, what surprised me the most is the price of this used (NEW) book, it wasnt used at all and I was able to personalize this book with their names in it so now they smile saying read my book.this was one of many books I've purchased and love so much. I have recommended this to my children for home collections. even their cheap selves can afford this. Thank you soo muchThis one is a favorite of my eldest granddaughter every night! but I love this time with them.

My grandson enjoyed reading Jack and the Beanstalk book. He can't wait to find out what happens at the end of the story. I would recommend these books to other friends and family members with children who enjoys reading, and the desire with exceling in reading.

This is a nice version of the story, and the illustrations are nicer than I expected for a bargain priced paperback. Just FYI- this is the adaptation of the story that claims the giant stole the gold, goose, and harp from Jack's family, which I suppose somewhat diminishes the heinousness of the theft/murder Jack and his mother commit. (Okay, not at all, but apparently that's why this rendition has become more popular in the last generation.) This reads as a classic, with just a bit of humor.

The classic story. I really like the illustrations. It does have the words Fee Fi, Fo Fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman. Whether that is too scary for some children, I don't know. You could always edit your reading! I hope to read this to my grandsons soon and see their reaction. I am looking into buying others in this series.

It is very difficult to find fairy tales appropriate for preschoolers -- either they are too close to the original, "dark" versions or they are too wordy/lengthy to keep a young child's attention. This book is great, because it is direct, simple, yet well-written. The story is not all roses and rainbows, but it's not as brutal as the original Grimm or Andersen tales. The pictures are beautiful. My four-year-old loves this story, more than any of the others in the series, and now he knows what we mean when we yell "Fee fi fo fum!" when we come looking for him during hide-and-seek!

Just as I remember it when I was a child. We recently had a baby shower for my daughter and the invitation requested a favorite childhood story be given and signed in place of a card. She received a nice selection of older classic stories, as well as, several newer titles. It was a lovely idea and she now has a great start on a home library for our grandson!

I've been reading this book to refresh my memory on digital signal processing. It is a good book, lots of theory in there, however it is a bit dry in its explanations, there are a lot of results (for example the value of a certain number series) that just are presented out of the blue while the reader scratches his head trying to come up with the missing steps. It starts from scratch but its not a freshman's book, I would say senior to graduate level. Overall its a good book, and you cant beat the price of the International Edition.

Our son needed this book for his Electrical Engineering program, which he finished, with a solid 4.0 GPA! Now he is debating his Phd in EE or to go on to Medical school. Thanks for a great price and quick shipping of this book.

Great explanation for every fundamental concepts. For instance, authors give a deep introduction about the background and purpose of Fourier Series and transform in Ch 4. The book demonstrates great details of Fourier Transform by constructing from mathematic components to a whole picture of Fourier Transform.This textbook explains almost everything and provides much more details than the current textbook I am using in UCLA. I guess this textbook also much better than most textbooks, since most textbooks don't even bother to cover the real fundamental concepts.However, as I reading along ch.4, there are many typo, but they all format problems so far. Ex. superscript, "x2" = x*x. integration from nothing to w, because it's lower limit become part of integral value.But still, this is a great book without a doubt!!!

While very easy to read and understand, the material covered is presented with sufficient depth. Practical examples and applications of material presented throughout the entire work.

This is a really well written and organized book. The development of the material follows a logical succession of topics, which makes this book a fantastic source to learn the subject from, and also a good reference for those that already know the subject matter. The reason for only 4/5 stars is mostly due to the poor coverage of terms in the index, which makes it hard to find where a particular concept is first introduced and defined. This is likely more of a problem for a DSP novice like me in trying to use the book as a reference. There are also numerous typographical errors in cross references and formulas in problem definitions, which I would have expected to be corrected by the 4th edition.

The book gives a great explanation of the concepts, and provides lots of details and examples. I am using this book for a graduate course and it is really easy to read. My book came well packaged and is almost like new.

Most of the book is OK, but there are printing/binding errors on pages 80-90.I would not have bought this textbook anyway if it weren't required for a class, so I cannot comment on the pros/cons of this book as compared to other DSP books.

The reader is better to have some background on DSP, such as Signal Processing First by McClellan, prior to study this book. This book provides more theories, examples and much more problem assignments which won't exist in elementary DSP books. Fortunately, one could find a problem solution guide in.pdf format. I applied the MathCAD 14.0 to solve the problem assignments and found a couple of typing errors in the solution guide. I also worked on some examples and the following work proved the "typing error" I found recently:For example, Example 9.3.1 (pg.594): I found two "typing errors" in nominators of recombining pairs of poles in H(z). The first numerator should be "-14.747+12.893z^-1" and the second numerator should be "24.708+2.343z^-1" rather than "-14.75-12.90z^-1" and "24.50+26.82z^-1". Hence, the A1, A2, A3 and A3* are correct--after verifying with MathCAD 14.0. I simply applied the "invztrans" function to transform the H(z) equation to corresponding h(n) counterpart, applies the plots of pole-zero, Impulse Response, and/or Frequency Response. The plots of Impulse Response of h(n) verified my correction.The solution manual is a great helper on assisting me to work on more problem assignments with confidence--It's the reason why I decided to purchase this textbook rather than other advance DSP books.I strongly recommend this textbook to those readers plan to learn more on studying the DSP technology.

This book is very "generic", touching on most of the things related to taking good pictures. However the information contained inside is more commonsensical. I was expecting something different. I kept on reading and felt like the book never started. I recently read the series from Stephen Hockman (Mastering camera aperture....and other areas). Those books gave some really good information that must be known before taking good pictures. I was hoping this book will put that all together for me. But it did not really get into it.This book is good if you want to start scratching the surface on photography. Nothing more than that...

Nicole Woods presented a great deal of very useful information in an easy to follow format. But don't get me wrong, it's not a lightweight book. It provides in depth discussions of many topics that will interest the novice DSLR user, but also provides content that will help out the experienced. It is nicely laid out so you are walked through step by step and not overwhelmed with a lot of information all at once. Instead you read perfectly sized chapters and the author provides great examples using color photos. It also encourages new photographers to venture beyond the confines of Auto Focus and play with the settings. The book is very liberating as it tells new photographers go out risk making mistakes as you learn the limits and trade offs imposed by aperture, ISO and shutter speed in various environments. Photography should be fun because you use your imagination to create the shot.

Loved this book! I have been really into taking pictures with slightly higher-end cameras lately and there are so many questions about how to use the camera and make the photo look stunning. I think this book really explains the details and answered most of my questions! I was drawn to this book because of its cover, but after reading it; I simply feel it worth my time and I'm one level up from where I was before I picked up this book. Thanks to the author, you did a great job and I definitely recommend this book to anyone who's interested in taking better photos!

Aperture, exposure, shuttle speed - all these terms were alien and gave me a headache previously. Not anymore.The author has explained these technical terms clearly in very simple language that allowed me to finally understand these terms.Love Chapter 10 where 10 tips on how to take great pictures and how to always be prepared to take good photos were shared. Chapter 13 was also an eye open for a newbie like myself.Can't wait to start playing around with my DSLR now!

It is like reading a starter photography class. It explains the basic elements of composition for taking photos. It goes over techniques used to improve the quality of the photo.There are sections on nature, landscape, portrait, flowers, plants and children. There is a section on what to consider when buying a digital camera. The techniques covered can be used for any type of photo taking device. The book does say to read your camera manual and if you are using a more advanced camera, you need to pay attention to that. The book explains why some photos didn't come out the way you though they might and how to correct for next time. I would have liked to seen side by side comparisons for visual learning. But on the whole. This would be a good starter for learning the basic techniques. I did receive this book for free for my unbiased review.

I purchased this book based on the high ratings given. In my opinion, all these ratings must be from friends and relatives trying to help. Yes, there are some good theories but it is short using correct photographic terms. Also, more attention should have been given checking and editing this book since it's hard to follow just trying to make sense what is meant; for example, when referring to the different types of tripod heads and positioning, reference is made to the tripod's ACCESS... I am sure it was meant to be AXIS. One thing I like about this book is that I know (now) that I can definitely write a digital photography book... and will - Thanks for that!

This book has really taught me a LOT about taking photos. I recently have been borrowing my friends DSLR, and wanted to learn more about using it properly, before I invested the thousands in one of my own. This book has taught me some excellent tips and tricks for gorgeous photos right from the get go. It is really written so that a beginner like me can understand. This book starts right from the beginning, teaching me about the equipment I am using, and then going into the basics of photographic composition. I may not be an expert after reading this, but I can certainly take a much better photo, and I am not doing shame to the very VERY nice camera my friend let me borrow. This was worth the three bucks for me.

This is not only an excellent guide to understanding your digital camera and getting the most out of it, but also an excellent basic guide to photography. The reader will learn some of the basic differences and benefits of having a digital camera and how to make the most out of its features. Never having had a great deal of experience with photography in general, I was pleased to get my hands on something that not only helped me to understand what all of those different setting on my digital camera do, but to help me take better picture in general.

Pinkney's language is delicious, worthy of reading and rereading as she creates a vivid picture of the placid family-filled life of 12-year-old Amira and then a life that is tragically devastated by the Janjaweed militia and Amira's escape to a dead-end refugee camp.I can't read realistic fiction that takes place in a real place that is still at war without wanting to know more and this might be an opportunity for students to do the same. I fell in love with Amira, her life, her losses, and her plight and immediately started researching the issues in this area of the world. To start, the refugee camp in the book - Kalma - still exists ten years after this story takes place and seems to be the permanent home of 130,000 displaced refugees. Schools for girls like Kalma have been started there. I also was intrigued by the details about Amira's life on a farm before the Janjaweed burned her home and village - the traditions, the foods, the ways of life--all so vivid because of the well written text. I'd like to read more about this as well.Back to Pinkney's text - it's just stunningly beautiful, filled with poetic, figurative language, written in narrative verse to help the reader access Amira's experience. Just flipping back through the book, I wanted to stop every few pages and read again. This book would be worthy of just enjoying reading, of studying for content, and of studying for language or as a mentor for writing.

 This is a deeply powerful book. Written in verse, we are right there with Amira on her journey through the hardships of her life in rural Sudan, and how one little gift helped her not just overcome them but honestly discover herself in the process. It covers a lot of situations not typically seen in middle grade books, but I think that just makes this book all the more valuable. Thank you Andrea Davis Pinkney for all the research you clearly put into this book for us! This book is in verse....and it's so lovely and heartbreaking at moments....so powerful. I gasped a few times....the poem "Fleeing" on page 121 was especially powerful....the line...."Each of us bears the heaviest weight of all,/anguish, unmovable,/like so many mud brick sacks." And her most prized possession is a twig...so impactful. I can't say enough...so good.

A poignant and powerful telling of the horrors of Darfur told from the POV of a twelve year old girl. It blew me away. I hope my 10 year old granddaughter understands this introduction to the sociology of the Sudan. I'm including the downloadable PDF educator's guide for her parents' use.

My students really enjoyed this novel, 5th graders from other countries, however the figurative language was so abundant that it made it somewhat difficult for them to understand on their own. Otherwise, beautifully written and kept their attention. A well enjoyed novel.

As a middle school English teacher I see this taught with Home of the Brave and or during a poetry unit. Vivid imagery lends itself to all kinds if literary study.

I ordered this book over the summer and then adopted it for my fifth and sixth-grade students. It is beautifully written and illustrated!

My 11 year old read through this book in less than a weeks time. She loved it and recommends it to all readers young and old.
