Call these flash cards? No way is this useful. They copied and paste the intro and the back of the book into 8 sections and call them flash cards. Useless

These flash cards aren't as effective as I expected. It appears more like someone copied and pasted a study book onto the front and back of flash cards. You would be better off getting a study book instead of these flash cards.

These "cards" are more like sheets of paper. There are no instructions on how to use this product included. There's no context provided so each sheet card reads like a series of random statements. I'm so disappointed by this purchase.

These flash cards include information from the logical reasoning section and the analytical section. I found that most things I already knew from other books. I would not recommend these if you already have other materials.

I think my expectations with these were to high. My girlfriend is/was studying for the LSAT and i got these as a practical surprise. The cards are very basic and even i found myself answering them fairly easy with almost no background knowledge. That being said i think thats the purpose of flash cards in general so i wont go lower than 3 stars.

Did not help when taking the LSAT. I thought these cards served no purpose.

The flash cards are an easy and relatively quick way to master the different kinds of LSAT questions.

These flash cards really helped me understand the lsat questions

Gandhi Before India, by Ramachandra Guha

From Booklist

*Starred Review* For many Westerners, the mention of Gandhi evokes stock images of the frail, scantily dressed Indian spouting tomes about peace and brotherhood while leading a noble, nonviolent struggle for Indian independence. Relatively few realize that Gandhi spent decades living outside of the subcontinent, in Britain and especially in South Africa. Guha, who has taught courses on Gandhi at Stanford and Yale, covers his life from his birth in British India, in 1869, up to his departure from South Africa and return to India in 1915. There is much that is familiar here, including Gandhi’s asceticism, his passion for justice, and his gift for savvy political maneuvering. But Guha’s account is full of surprises. In Britain, as a young barrister, Gandhi moved freely with a liberal and racially diverse crowd and proudly viewed himself as a “citizen of the Empire” while dressing stylishly. In South Africa, the rigid racial divisions shocked him, and it was here that he developed the tactics that he employed so effectively later in India. This is an outstanding opening volume of a planned two-volume biography of one of the most widely revered but often misunderstood figures in world history. --Jay Freeman

Review

“Remarkable. . . . [A] moving portrait.” —The New York Times Book Review“Guha is a brilliant historian who combines the gift of a storyteller, the discipline of an academic and the critical ability of seeing Gandhi as a fascinating human being, by not placing him on a pedestal. . . . [He] has re-created the past by connecting scattered dots . . . to weave a rich tapestry.” —San Francisco Chronicle“Striking. . . . Guha ably shows, for all that Gandhi influenced events in South Africa, it was he who experienced the greater change.” —The Economist “Deeply contextualized, dexterously researched, and judiciously written, this deserves to become the landmark biography of the early Gandhi.” —Maya Jasanoff, New Republic“Fascinating. . . . A biography with a remarkable ear for the resonances of Gandhi’s work and time—for the fan-mail and hate-mail; for overheard disagreements with family and colleagues; for his exchanges with political acquaintances, including his enemies. . . . As exhaustively researched a biography of the African Gandhi as we will have for some time.” —The Independent (London) “[A] magisterial study. . . . Guha summarizes the traits of Gandhi’s character and the stages during the first half of his life that prepared him for the much more difficult journey he would undertake once he returned to India. . . . I was rewarded beyond all of my expectations [by Gandhi Before India].” —Charles R. Larson, Counterpunch “Substantial enough to be comprehensive, yet concise enough to be approachable by the general reader. . . . Sharp, insightful, balanced and impeccably researched.” —Alex von Tunzelmann, The Times (London) “A work of vivid social history as well as biography. . . . One of the surprises in Gandhi Before India is just how much fresh material it contains. Guha has a gift for tracking down obscure letters and newspaper reports and patching them together to make history come alive.” —Patrick French, The Guardian (London) “Fascinating. . . . [Gandhi Before India] reveals how an impossibly shy young man, who donned top hat and tails as a student at Inner Temple, transformed himself into Churchill’s ‘half-naked fakir,’ dedicated to his spinning wheel while simultaneously challenging the might of the Empire.” —The Sunday Times (London) “The portrait offered in historian Ramachandra Guha’s biography is of Gandhi as a human being, not just a hero.” —Financial Times “Gandhi Before India should be required reading for the student of contemporary affairs. . . . Guha’s carefully rendered observations about class, religion, and ethnicity—how they divide people and how they can be bridged by common concerns and simple decency—are the heart of this book. . . . Remarkable.” —The Christian Science Monitor “A magisterial history. . . . In Ramachandra Guha, a great man has found a great biographer, a wise, persistent and elegant historian who has done justice to perhaps his nation’s greatest story. . . . One senses, in the author’s approach, something of Gandhi’s own intensity and rigour. . . . [The] book never ceases to inform and intrigue.” —Sydney Morning Herald “What sets [Gandhi Before India] apart from other recent biographies . . . is Guha’s resolutely non-scurrilous perspective. . . . What emerges in the end, with the slow magic of a film being developed in an old fashioned dark room, is a sharp picture of the intellectual growth of a remarkable man.” —The Hindustan Times (India) “Many will come to this biography wanting to know more about Gandhi himself. . . . Guha relates all this wonderfully. His book is clearly a labour of love, though not of uncritical infatuation. What distinguishes it is the breadth of the context—Indian, British and South African. Guha marshals his material sensitively and empathetically in order to give shape, colour and depth to the life of this saint-like figure.” —Bernard Porter, The Literary Review “Excellent and exhaustive. . . . Guha has done heroic work in reconstructing this period of Gandhi’s life ... Gandhi emerges here as a fascinatingly complicated and contradictory figure . . . rich and absorbing, it will doubtless serve as the fundamental portrait of Gandhi for many years to come.” —The Sunday Business Post (Ireland) “Guha is India’s best-known historian, who marshals his wide scholarship in contemporary and modern history with a raconteur’s lucid felicity.” —DNA Mumbai

What an interesting title. It's the "before" that at once catches the eye. While India and Gandhi are inextricably linked, this book derives its principal interest from how South Africa prepared Gandhi for his future role. As Jon Stewart remarked right away when he introduced author Ramachandra Guha on his show, Gandhi is truly a "global" figure in the highest sense of the phrase even in this era of mass celebrities where he stands taller than pretty much everyone else to date. Indeed, whatever may be the future of humanity, and, however and whoever writes it, Gandhi will always be an essential player in that account. In simple, clear, enthusiastic prose Guha charts the evolution of Gandhi from a modest young lawyer with unremarkable speaking skills, one who had yet to find his real métier, to someone who became self-charged with a mission of fighting injustice in his own unique and now immediately, famously, recognizable way. In time to come, he was able to hold the attention of millions when he spoke. From what I gather reading this book, in the second half of the nineteenth century, racism in South Africa was raw and unspeakably vile. How on earth a shy young man coming from a subcontinent away, ostensibly to practice law on behalf of a small Indian community in its diaspora, stepped up to a huge challenge involving the very foundations of justice as applicable to all (if it is to be just) while still maintaining decency, dignity, kindliness vis-a-vis the aggressive Boers and British is nothing short of revolutionary - in the best sense of that word. The thing is Guha (if I understand correctly) suggests that nothing in Gandhi's background probably predisposed him naturally to fight the battles that he met/chose. As the book points out, the "trader caste" from which Gandhi originated were just the kind of folks who abhorred rocking the boat. Profits rather than a desire for justice probably controlled their raison d'être. Guha's challenge is to show how from such a conservative seed bed arose this innovative "warrior" of the spirit and I believe this book does that very well. One critical facet that emerges from the book is that Gandhi possessed not only an abundance of "moral"/ethical courage but, surprisingly, a great deal of "physical" courage as well despite his apparent lack of physical prowess. Thus it is that Gandhi will always stand for me as the perfect antidote to the biggest bullies of his age. In researching source materials for this book, Guha took advantage of newly arrived access to archives from post-apartheid South Africa. That was a great move on his part. I leave with the perception that the greatest of persons are not necessarily born that way. Like the rest of us they too have to swim against the current to make something of themselves. But unlike most of us, time and circumstance evoke an amazing, out of scale, and yet benevolent response from them. Read, you have nothing to lose and much to admire!

As a long time fan of the writer and having picked up this book in Berkeley, I was pleased to read that the book was born in Ram Guha's mind when teaching a course on Gandhi at Berkeley in 1998. The title of this book is not just a play on words after his famous book India After Gandhi, it truly is 550 pages of the largely unknown story of Gandhi starting at birth (1869) and before returning to India after 20 years in South Africa (1894-1914).With a rigor that only Ram Guha is capable of, he arduously reconstructs the story of Gandhi's first 45 years from contemporary records of his years in Porbandar, Rajkot, Bombay, London, Durban and Johannesburg. While earlier works are a collection of writings by Gandhi or secondary works thereof, this book also referred letters written by others to Gandhi, papers of Gandhi's friends and associates in South Africa, records of governments of India, South Africa and England, and archived newspapers and publications of the time. It is a miracle that all these sources were stitched so perfectly in chronology and diligently edited to re-create a deeply personal story spanning his early childhood, relationship with his parents, relationship with Muslim friends from school and then abroad, relationships with his wife and children, relationships with Christians, Jews and Parsis in his life in London and South Africa, besides Hindus from different states, speaking different languages and from different socio-economic conditions. For a pious Indian bania, his work with women was far ahead of his time as well.As an upper-caste Hindu male in the 19th century, you can see his world view shift after finding himself among an oppressed minority in South Africa, discovering the power of his moral character and values, evolving into a leader of the Asiatics (including Chinese), while inspiring white South Africans alike, successfully experimenting with the ideas of passive resistance and satyagraha in the face of strong colonial leadership, before returning to India as "Mahatma" and contributing to the freedom struggle in a decisive way with the same ideas. As an Indian, especially as an immigrant, I could relate to the power of these foundation years - more than half his life - in shaping a personality that we know to be the legend who is practically immortal with what he stands for. Some of the most unknown stories of one of the most popular men on the planet. You must read it and get inspired with ideas that remain as relevant as ever in the 21st century.

I just completed reading this book. Another excellently researched, well written book by this author, though this is a bit of a slow read.I have read several books on Gandhi, with Gandhi (like history of Indian independence), watched the movie. But Gandhi always seemed either one dimensional or a superman. This is the first book that provides depth to Gandhi, at least made him more human to me.It does not diminish what Gandhi accomplished, it adds to it. Gandhi's personality grows in the book. One understands why Gandhi did what he did and how he did it. It has only increased my respect for the man. Many people criticize Gandhi and his methods, his leadership & philosophy. At time this has included me. However I think I have come to the conclusion that this criticism was/is unwarranted. Gandhi was not like Hitler or Stalin who imposed their philosophy on others through fear and repression. He instead showed an alternative way and asked people to follow. He did not stop others from leading. I think India and the world is better off thanks to this. And history shows that his methods take time to get results but overall the society progresses leaving behind little scars, which makes for a better humane world.

Great! Very informative and easy to follow

Not an in depth study but the perfect little guide for Seder with pictures. Very visual part of the experience.

It was a blessing to read the simplicity of this book in understanding the Passover Meal. I had recently been studying Exodus and this book ties closely with the events of chapters 1 to 12. I would recommend it to others.

Everything was as expected

I liked this guide because it made me understand the Seder better. VIVIAN COLBERT Now I understand even our Christmas and Easter holidays better.

excellent tool thank you

Where's.the beef? I'm not sure if this is a book about Christ in Judism or how have a Christian Seder. The title.suggests the latter. Pick your battles wisely.

This was my first Seder Haggadah. It really is easy to follow instructions. Just the basics and of course with a Christian spin. I may get another written from a strictly Jewish point of view but this is a helpful beginning and likely the outline for our family's first passover meal.

Those books were an essential part of the formation of my gay identity as a twenty-something back in the day. Purchased at the Oscar Wilde Bookstore in Greenwich Village, the Brandstetter books also helped shape my taste in gay literature, which has been a personal specialty of mine for nearly four decades.Brandstetter was a man of my parents’ generation, and the ways in which he handled his gay identity were, in terms of contemporary popular literature, revolutionary. No shame, no fear, only an unshaken sense of justice and belief in his personal moral compass. These books will always hold a key place in the history of gay writing as well as in detective fiction.I’m going to propose that Neil Plakcy’s “Mahu” series—what we could call the Kimo Kanapa’aka mysteries—hold an equally important place in 21st-century gay pop literature. I would even place them, in terms of importance, ahead of the Adrien English series by Josh Lanyon, simply because Neil Plakcy uses his own name and is known in his professional circles (college professor) for these books. For all that it is ubiquitous in m/m literature circles, for me pseudonyms will always bring with them all sorts of unpleasant historical associations with shame and fear of retribution. Gore Vidal was raked over the public coals for publishing “The City and the Pillar” in 1948. But he survived and became an icon (albeit a cranky icon) of gay identity and gay literature. As I tried to think back through all seven books (so far) in Neil Plakcy’s “Mahu” series, I realized that before I started reviewing m/m romances on Amazon and then Goodreads, I wrote what were essentially email mash notes to the authors. Neil was one of the authors who responded warmly to my emails, teaching me the value of writing to authors and (eventually) the importance of writing reviews of every book I read. The chief joy of the internet for me is that we become agents in the success of authors we love. What captivated me immediately with Kimo Kanapa’aka’s story were two things: his evolving ambivalence about being gay, and the crucial importance in his life of his mixed-race extended Hawai’ian family. In the first book, “Mahu,” we see a closeted Honolulu detective, regretful of his absent love life and fearful of what might happen if the other policemen were to learn his secret. I will drop a bit of a spoiler here—but an unavoidable one—to tell you that the crux of this book, other than the murder itself, is that Kimo has to out himself in order to solve the case. It is this painful and terrifying personal choice that launches the rest of the series, and made me fall in love with this smart, thoughtful, sexy Hawai’ian cop.Kimo represents the ironic dichotomy of the generation of gay men who could be my sons. In a world where awareness of all things gay is a thousand percent greater than it was in my youth, the ability to control the unveiling of your gay identity is diminished, while many of the anxieties with which coming out is fraught are no less terrifying than they were for my generation. Plakcy evokes this poignantly in “Mahu,” and continues to unpack these issues throughout the rest of the series. The word “Mahu,” repeated in five of the seven titles so far, is a very specific Hawai’ian word that refers to a third gender. It can be used disparagingly or as a badge of pride, as is the word “queer” today. It also seems to have something of the essence of the mainland Native American concept of “two spirit.” This is just one of the pleasures of this series related to the setting. Plakcy, who lived in Hawai’i for a number of years, makes this American-yet-not-quite-like-the-rest-of-it island state an enormously important part of the story. It is the nature of Hawaii, with its contrasts of beauty and ugliness, its sense of paradise in danger, that colors Kimo’s story and makes the reader yearn to visit (or, in my case, visit again). Just as the Brandstetter mysteries were all about Los Angeles, the “Mahu” series is very much rooted in its place. In the third book in the series, “Mahu Fire,” Kimo meets Mike Ricchardi, half Italian and half Korean. With kindred ambivalence about his sexuality and his family, Mike becomes an increasingly important player in the narrative arc as each book progresses. I don’t want to reveal either the mystery plots or the complexities of Mike and Kimo’s relationship; but it important to start with “Mahu” and read the books sequentially. In fact the books can stand alone, but they’re more interesting as the large picture of gay life and family life in Hawai’i becomes increasingly complex and rich. The Hawai’ian word “ohana” is important in these books—the idea of family as more than blood kin, emphasizing community, loyalty and unconditional support.I think, once Prism publishes this, I’m going to post it on all of the books’ Amazon and Goodreads pages: “Mahu,” “Mahu Vice,” “Mahu Surfer,” “Mahu Fire,” “Mahu Blood,” “Natural Predators” and “Zero Break.” There are some completely unmerited negative reviews of Plakcy’s writing by people who clearly devalue the very things that make them special in the world of gay lit. There’s no accounting for bad reviews and ignorant writers. The internet gives us the power to change things for the writers we love.

I really enjoy the Mahu series. The writer is not quite as fluent as, say, James Patterson, but the errors or 'clunky' sections are generally small and few. The stories are good, but the characters are what really set it apart, in my opinion. Detective novels are a dime-a-dozen, but Plakcy gives us a gay detective who manages to sidestep both the gay stereotypes and the detective stereotypes while remaining a character who feels very real and three-dimensional. I like that Kimo is sexual in a realistic way; his sexuality is present without being overbearing or too graphic. The other characters in the series are also very interesting; Kimo's brothers and parents, his friends, his occasional partners both on the job and in the bedroom. They all have histories and motivations that make them feel like normal people. Even the more stereotypically flouncy gay characters, like a hairdresser friend or Gunter, Kimo's gay second-hand-man, have more depth than many of the primary characters in other 'gay' novels I've read.I just wish it was easier to deduce the order of the series; give the books numbers or something so I know the order in which to read them.

You will never go wrong with a "Mahu" themed book from Neil Plakcy. I've bought everything in the series and have loved each book. The characters, the development of those characters across the series, the pacing, plotting, and the description of locations along with insights into the local culture all work together for a satisfying mystery experience. I can say nothing critical about his work. This author has another series that is a bit racier. This one deals with a pair of bodyguards who work in exotic locations around the Mediterranean, including Northern Africa, Southern France, and Corsica. If you like erotica, and I unapologetically do, Plakcy has written and/or edited collections of MM erotica so hot the pages threaten to self-ignite. Add to all this information the fact Plakcy is an Ivy-educated man who studied writing at (PENN) and business at Columbia (MBA), then earned an MFA in Creative writing at a small Florida institution, and you realize you have one obviously smart, clearly gifted fellow writing for your personal entertainment.

A really fun read. Plakcy's stories are always enjoyable. I am planning to read the other books in this series.

This author writes in a way that is easy to relate to for every reader. He tells an interesting story in a gentle loving way.

Very talented writer with good character development of a gay cop in Honolulu.. Lots of action and intrigue. I would recommend all of his books.

This story is typical of Planky. It is fast paced and fun. I hope he keeps adding to this series. I would rate it a 10 out of 10.mike beery, author of Getting It.

This is a great series of books. Easy to read and really hold your interest. Great to see a 'normal' gay character.
