This book is a must read for security professionals (cyber security as well as physical security) in order to get a glimpse behind the curtain of the attackers we deal with. It shows the tricks that these criminals use as well as their very real weaknesses, which are often an arrogance and overconfidence. These people are not superhuman but even the more talented ones are looking for others to show them what vulnerabilities can be exploited. As someone in the profession, this book yields valuable clues into those that made headlines over the years and how they were able to steal credit card and other info. Often when we first learn about an incident there are precious few details that are revealed. For those generally interested in one aspect of the hacker world this book should be an interesting read without being full of too much technical detail. You get a look at the personalities and backgrounds of those involved on the criminal side and ultimately the lesson is clear, these folks do not lead a glamorous life and eventually many get caught.

After reading the first 10 chapters or so, there was no way I was going to finish reading this book. As a focal point for the book, there's not much to like to the main character, Max Vision. Six months later, I picked up Kingpin one more time and I have to say the book finishes well. After a thorough introduction to the Max Vision, the book goes on to describe the Cyber Crime world over the course of the early 2000's. The vulnerabilities in newly networked systems enabled a large number of cyber criminals to make a good living on credit card fraud that the banking industry was loathe to bring to the light to the victims of these crimes. The creativity of the FBI after a few bumbling mistakes is also described in detail. In the end, this is an interesting book about cops and robbers in the emerging Internet age.

This book is an absolute thriller from beginning to end and, as a form of informational entertainment, is well worth the price. The narrative is fantastic and Kevin Poulsen describes the events in a way that inspires both intrigue and admonishment.Delving deeply into the story of black hat hacker, Max Butler, the book takes you turn by turn through the complex and unsurprisingly dog-eat-dog world of the underground carding scene. A place where illegal fortunes are made and lost at the click of a mouse, the swipe of a card, and the rattle of a keyboard. The cat and mouse aspect of Keith Mularski, the FBI agent charged with penetrating the underground criminal element and Max Butler plays out with so much drama and intensity that it would not surprise me if a translation to the big screen is made. Believe me when I say it is extremely hard to put this book down. The only negative remark I could make is that Mr. Poulsen is somewhat biased in his depiction of Max Butler. There are times when it feels as if he is trying to excuse or explain away Max's criminal actions as if he weren't the kingpin of an elaborate hacking and fraud ring, but instead just a conflicted brilliant mind. Regardless, if you are even remotely interested in the topic then I would highly recommend getting this book.

Just wow. This book describes how so many of the identity theft rings and credit card exploits have occurred. These are some very talented engineers - as a decent engineer you'll find yourself wondering if you too would yield to the temptation laid in front of you by the poor security the banks and merchants implement in allegedly protecting our identities and credit. You'll discover whether security or the bottom line is valued by these corporations, and walk away disturbed as you shut the book. A must read for consumers and engineers!

I have read many books about computer security. Many of them tried to shed light on the cybercrime, but all of them failed. Most of the time, people seem to be afraid to touch sensitive stuff, because this typically involves revealing identities of cybercrime bosses and their counterparts – FBI operatives. And without mentioning the names a book becomes too generic and boring. This is the best book written in a decade about the subject. It describes the life of the most notorious American hacker named Max Butler. He is the guy responsible for stealing more than 1 billion US dollars from credit cards. If your credit card ever got abused (I know such people who suddenly found 20 pillows charged to their credit card) then blame this guy.The book is written with an intimate knowledge of hacker’s daily routine. It also sheds light on his early days, the time when he was growing up, his relationships with other people, etc. This is only possible because the author – Kevin Poulsen is a former black hat hacker himself. The book makes it very clear that hackers are neither good nor bad. Of course, if your credit card suffers then they are obviously bad from your point of view. More generally, however, hackers are responsible for many security tools that help protect networks from some other bad guys. Hackers give specific warning signs to governments and corporate world: protect your networks or big trouble will happen. This book makes it clear that hackers are not just those evil teenagers. It is more of philosophy and lifestyle, the way of making this world better... Of course, hackers do harm to individual people, but they are rather useful to society in general.

Good author. Appealing recipes. Great ideas to build repertoire for entertaining or potlucks.

Oh, I can't wait to get busy in the kitchen! Perre Coleman Magnus delivers another gorgeous recipe book with beautifully written intros and tempting photos.

It's no secret that southerners love to eat. Most functions and gatherings in the south revolve around food. The rich tradition of southern cooking is showcased in the pages of this book. This cookbook offers 77 recipes for full flavor southern snacks, good for everything from potlucks to tailgating. Many of the recipes are either borrowed from or inspired by southern community cookbooks, home cooks, and chefs who put new twists on southern flavors. Each recipe features a brief introduction, helpful tips, and a history of the dish. Most of the recipes also feature full color photos of the delicious dish. There is also another feature called "sidebars" where the author showcases a staple ingredient or southern tradition. These are sprinkled throughout the book. There's something for every appetite in this fantastic cookbook. The recipes are divided into categories as follows:1. Dips and Spreads2. Cheese, Please3. Deep-Fried Love4. Seafood and Eat It5. The Meat of the Matter6. The Garden Path7. Nuts for Snacks8. LagniappeThe end of the book provides a source for finding ingredients and a complete index of the recipes.I would recommend this book to anyone who loves unique food, particularly food prepared with a southern twist. I received this as a free ARC from The University of North Carolina Press on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I'm a southerner so this book immediately spoke to me but you don't have to be southern for it to speak to you. I'm always looking for fun bites to try because not only do I love to cook, I also enjoy the looks on peoples faces when they eat something I've put together. This book came at a great time for me, my dad will be turning 70 in August and I've been looking for new recipes to make for a party we are having for him. Let me tell you this book delivered wonderfully on taste and ease when I took on several recipes, deciding on the ones I will use for my dads party. I tested several and loved them all. The Carolina Caviar was a simple but well seasoned dish that I enjoyed making, I've made a recipe similar to this one but enjoyed the differences that this one added. Now as anyone can tell you southerners love Deviled Eggs and that happens to be a specialty of mine so I had to try the Deviled Egg Spread and it turned out beautifully. Not only was it easy to make but it truly reminded me of a deviled egg. I'll be turning this spread into sandwiches like the book suggested and can't wait to see what everyone thinks. Now I have a freezer packed full of pecans that I put up last year and I found a fabulous recipe that not only allowed me to use them but brought them to life. The Pecan Cheese Strips were simple to make and are something that can be made ahead of time and frozen. I love this because I can always make several batches, freeze them, and pull them out when needed. When you are making most of the food for a party being able to make something ahead of time is always welcome. The last recipe that I tried was the Bacon Pecan Cheese Ball, just like the deviled eggs, southerners adore a well put together cheese ball. I've made a huge variety of them over the years but never one like this and let me tell you it is one that I will use again and again. Who doesn't love bacon and cheese!!! This was truly a great compilation of recipes that I look forward to making may way through. I'll be testing more as the weeks go by and can't wait to see what catches my taste buds next.

Perre Coleman Magness certainly knows his Southern dishes as is evident in Southern Snacks. There are a variety of small delicious bite-size recipes in this book along with some wonderful tales to go with them. I loved the story of Hollywood even though I am not a dill pickle fan.The recipes are categorized into groups such as Dips and Spreads; Cheese, Please; Deep-Fried Love; Seafood and Eat It; The Meat of the Matter; The Garden Path; Nuts for Snacks; and Lagniappe. It has been said that here in the South we fry everything, but that chapter is not the longest, but it does have some interesting, mouth-watering recipes such as corn fritters with spicy honey. This is a cookbook that any South cook would be proud to own. Buy it for yourself, then give a copy as a gift. The publisher through Net Galley provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.

What I was looking for was a book about 'how to rebuild our world from scratch'.A series of 'this is how to build a fire', 'this is how to identify iron-bearing rocks', 'this is how to smelt iron', 'this is how to build a steam engine, etc.The book instead is a series of chapters describing problems that one facing the rebuilding of civilization would face with no solutions. For example it describes how post-1800s farming requires industrial nitrogen fixing and how not having that is an issue, without providing a solution. This book is a good starting point for research, but is not what I was hoping for.

This is a pretty good book. Entertaining, a good light treatment of the topic...And the lightness is my main problem. Everything is covered in to shallow a depth, the author doesn't explore any one topic in sufficient detail, and the end result is...Well. The author comes out (towards the end) and says this is a thinly disguised popular science popularization, rather than a flawed-but-serious attempt to do what the book is marketed to do.So... the marketing is hyperbolic, and a huge let-down. Maybe pick up if this one's under $4.00 on sale, or buy for a precocious 12 year old, rather than an adult with a strong technical background. This would make a better TV show than a book.

Well written and fascinating. I read it cover to cover. I put it next to my throne and it captivated me unreservedly! I don't plan to rebuild civilization anytime soon, but I enjoyed discovering how the scientific principles of our complex industrial world were discovered, and then learning how the technology was developed that underlies modern civilization.I'm filled with awe at the brilliant people who have built our modern civilization.I heartily recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand how the things we take for granted actually work, or who wish to appreciate what amazing ingenuity went into developing our present civilization.I bought a copy and sent it to my brother, who also reported enjoying it.

A radio interview with the author led me to believe this book had basic information for the processes needed to start from scratch and reconstitute necessary technologies. As food production, finding, obtaining and storing potable water, simple metallurgy (from mining to finished product) subsistence plumbing and sanitation. It was, apparently, too much to ask. The Back to Basics Handbook is much more valuable and comes much closer to fulfilling the expectations generated by The Knowledge's author.

This is a very informative book with a lot of fascinating detail. It is basically a thought experiment. If most of humanity was wiped out in the morning and a handful of people remained, could they survive and rebuild modern technology? To determine this, Dartnell looks how these technologies were originally developed and any possible short cuts which the survivors could take. The ‘apocalypse’ itself described in book was very clinical but this book is not meant to be a blow-by-blow instruction manual. I couldn’t see survivors sitting around it deciding what to do on Day 24. However, it does contain a lot of high level technological insight that a post-apocalyptic Edison or Pasteur might find useful and could spend years of their lives trying to leverage. The book is apolitical. Its focus is the technology. If you need advice on how to hang on to your post-apocalyptic fiefdom, consult Machiavelli, Sun Tzu and other experts in such matters. Oh, the book doesn’t cover killing zombies either. Some readers might find the advanced chemistry section a bit of a drudge, but I can’t see how Dartnell could avoid that, given leaving it out would undermine the book’s purpose. On the flip side, it provides useful context for any fledgling chemistry students. The footnotes throughout the book are consistently very interesting. I think any writer interested in world building would find the book very useful. One thing to note is that the book is shorter than it appears. About the last 20% is filled with references, including a useful list of relevant fiction. One final word of advice. If you want to tuck this away for the apocalypse, so you can amaze the other survivors with your scientific knowhow, remember to buy the paperback, not the ebook. Unless you’re really sure you can get those generators up and running.

Quite a fun read for me. I think you would like this if you are curious about how things work. It is not a "survivalist" book. It is a book designed to inform people about how little we understand the foundations of our technology. I think we often are unaware of the actually brilliant efforts our ancestors made just to get us to the level of production we take for granted today. I sometimes get the impression from peers that they think people in the past were kind of dumb not to have cell phones and microwave popcorn. But the people saying that are completely ignorant of the complex path of development we have taken and would be hopeless about even how to begin to do these things if they had to start from scratch. So... a good book for those interested in the history of technology; but also a good book for the reader of science fiction as these concepts tie in with many works of that genre in an indirect way. It was well written and edited.

General Introduction to the Core Knowledge SeriesI. WHAT IS YOUR CHILD LEARNING IN SCHOOL? A parent of identical twins sent me a letter in which she expressed concern that her children, who are in the same grade in the same school, are being taught completely different things. How can this be? Because they are in different classrooms; because the teachers in these classrooms have only the vaguest guidelines to follow; in short, because the school, like many in the United States, lacks a definite, specific curriculum. Many parents would be surprised if they were to examine the curriculum of their child’s elementary school. Ask to see your school’s curriculum. Does it spell out, in clear and concrete terms, a core of specific content and skills all children at a particular grade level are expected to learn by the end of the school year? Many curricula speak in general terms of vaguely defined skills, processes, and attitudes, often in an abstract, pseudo-technical language that calls, for example, for children to “analyze patterns and data,” or “investigate the structure and dynamics of living systems,” or “work cooperatively in a group.” Such vagueness evades the central question: what is your child learning in school? It places unreasonable demands upon teachers and often results in years of schooling marred by repetitions and gaps. Yet another unit on dinosaurs or “pioneer days.” Charlotte’s Web for the third time. “You’ve never heard of the Bill of Rights?” “You’ve never been taught how to add two fractions with unlike denominators?” When identical twins in two classrooms of the same school have few academic experiences in common, that is cause for concern. When teachers in that school do not know what children in other classrooms are learning on the same grade level, much less in earlier and later grades, they cannot reliably predict that children will come prepared with a shared core of knowledge and skills. For an elementary school to be successful, teachers need a common vision of what they want their students to know and be able to do. They need to have clear, specific learning goals, as well as the sense of mutual accountability that comes from shared commitment to helping all children achieve those goals. Lacking both specific goals and mutual accountability, too many schools exist in a state of curricular incoherence, one result of which is that they fall far short of developing the full potential of our children. To address this problem, I started the nonprofit Core Knowledge Foundation in 1986. This book and its companion volumes in the Core Knowledge Series are designed to give parents, teachers—and through them, children—clearly defined learning goals in the form of a carefully sequenced body of knowledge, based upon the specific content guidelines developed by the Core Knowledge Foundation. Core Knowledge is an attempt to define, in a coherent and sequential way, a body of knowledge taken for granted by competent writers and speakers in the United States. Because this knowledge is taken for granted rather than explained when used, it forms a necessary foundation for the higher-order reading, writing, and thinking skills that children need for academic and vocational success. The universal attainment of such knowledge should be a central aim of curricula in our elementary schools, just as it is currently the aim in all world-class educational systems. For reasons explained in the next section, making sure that all young children in the United States possess a core of shared knowledge is a necessary step in developing a first-rate educational system. II. WHY CORE KNOWLEDGE IS NEEDED Learning builds on learning: children (and adults) gain new knowledge only by building on what they already know. It is essential to begin building solid foundations of knowledge in the early grades when children are most receptive because, for the vast majority of children, academic deficiencies from the first six grades can permanently impair the success of later learning. Poor performance of American students in middle and high school can be traced to shortcomings inherited from elementary schools that have not imparted to children the knowledge and skills they need for further learning. All of the highest-achieving and most egalitarian elementary school systems in the world (such as those in Sweden, France, and Japan) teach their children a specific core of knowledge in each of the grades, thus enabling all children to enter each new grade with a secure foundation for further learning. It is time American schools did so as well, for the following reasons: (1) Commonly shared knowledge makes schooling more effective. We know that the one-on-one tutorial is the most effective form of schooling, in part because a parent or teacher can provide tailor-made instruction for the individual child. But in a non-tutorial situation—in, for example, a typical classroom with twenty-five or more students—the instructor cannot effectively impart new knowledge to all the students unless each one shares the background knowledge that the lesson is being built upon. Consider this scenario: in third grade, Ms. Franklin is about to begin a unit on early explorers: Columbus, Magellan, and others. In her class, she has some students who were in Mr. Washington’s second-grade class last year and some students who were in Ms. Johnson’s class. She also has a few students who moved in from other towns. As Ms. Franklin begins the unit, she asks the children to look at a globe and use their fingers to trace a route across the Atlantic Ocean from Europe to North America. The students who had Mr. Washington look blankly at her: they didn’t learn that last year. The students who had Ms. Johnson, however, eagerly point to the proper places on the globe, while two of the students who came from other towns pipe up and say, “Columbus and Magellan again? We did that last year.” When all the students in a class do share the relevant background knowledge, a classroom can begin to approach the effectiveness of a tutorial. Even when some children in a class do not have elements of the knowledge they were supposed to acquire in previous grades, the existence of a specifically defined core makes it possible for the teacher or parent to identify and fill in the gaps, thus giving all students a chance to fulfill their potential in later grades. (2) Commonly shared knowledge makes schooling more fair and democratic. When all the children who enter a grade can be assumed to share some of the same building blocks of knowledge, and when the teacher knows exactly what those building blocks are, then all the students are empowered to learn. In our current system, children from disadvantaged backgrounds too often suffer from unmerited low expectations that translate into watered-down curricula. But if we specify the core of knowledge that all children should share, then we can guarantee equal access to that knowledge and compensate for the academic advantages some students are offered at home. In a Core Knowledge school, all children enjoy the benefits of important, challenging knowledge that will provide the foundation for successful later learning. (3) Commonly shared knowledge helps create cooperation and solidarity in our schools and nation. Diversity is a hallmark and strength of our nation. American classrooms are often, and increasingly, made up of students from a variety of cultural backgrounds, and those different cultures should be honored by all students. At the same time, education should create a school-based culture that is common and welcoming to all because it includes knowledge of many cultures and gives all students, no matter what their background, a common foundation for understanding our cultural diversity. III. THE CONSENSUS BEHIND THE CORE KNOWLEDGE SEQUENCE The content in this and other volumes in the Core Knowledge Series is based on a document called the Core Knowledge Sequence, a grade-by-grade sequence of specific content guidelines in English, history, geography, mathematics, science, art, and music. The Sequence is not meant to outline the whole of the school curriculum; rather, it offers specific guidelines to knowledge that can reasonably be expected to make up about half of any school’s curriculum, or perhaps a little more, thus leaving ample room for local requirements and emphases. Teaching a common core of knowledge, such as that articulated in the Core Knowledge Sequence, is compatible with a variety of instructional methods and additional subject matters. The Core Knowledge Sequence is the result of a long process of research and consensus building undertaken by the Core Knowledge Foundation. Here is how we achieved the consensus behind the Core Knowledge Sequence. First we analyzed the many reports issued by state departments of education and by professional organizations—such as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the American Association for the Advancement of Science—that recommend general outcomes for elementary and secondary education. We also tabulated the knowledge and skills through grade six specified in the successful educational systems of several other countries, including France, Japan, Sweden, and West Germany. In addition, we formed an advisory board on multiculturalism that proposed specific knowledge of diverse cultural traditions that American children should all share as part of their school-based common culture. We sent the resulting materials to three independent groups of teachers, scholars, and scientists around the country, asking them to create a master list of the knowledge children should have by the end of grade six. About 150 teachers (including college professors, scientists, and administrators) were involved in this initial step. These items were amalgamated into a master plan, and further groups of teachers and specialists were asked to agree on a grade-by-grade sequence of the items. That sequence was then sent to some 100 educators and specialists who participated in a national conference that was called to hammer out a working agreement on an appropriate core of knowledge for the first six grades. This important meeting took place in March 1990. The conferees were elementary school teachers, curriculum specialists, scientists, science writers, officers of national organizations, representatives of ethnic groups, district superintendents, and school principals from across the country. A total of twenty-four working groups decided on revisions in the Core Knowledge Sequence. The resulting provisional Sequence was further fine-tuned during a year of implementation at a pioneering school, Three Oaks Elementary in Lee County, Florida. In only a few years many more schools—urban and rural, rich and poor, public and private—joined in the effort to teach Core Knowledge. Based largely on suggestions from these schools, the Core Knowledge Sequence has been significantly revised: it was extended to seventh and eighth grades; separate guidelines were added for kindergarten; and a few topics in other grades were added, omitted, or moved from one grade to another, in order to create an even more coherent sequence for learning. A Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence was first published in 1997. The revised edition of this and other books in the Core Knowledge Series reflect the revisions in the Sequence. Current editions of the Core Knowledge Sequence and the Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence may be ordered from the Core Knowledge Foundation. IV. THE NATURE OF THIS SERIES The books in this series are designed to give a convenient and engaging introduction to the knowledge specified in the Core Knowledge Sequence. These are not textbooks; they are resource books, addressed primarily to parents, but which we hope will be useful tools for teachers, too. These books are not intended to replace the local curriculum or school textbooks, but rather to serve as aids to help children gain some of the important knowledge they will need to make progress in school and be effective in society. Although we have made these books as accessible and useful as we can, parents and teachers should understand that they are not the only means by which the Core Knowledge Sequence can be imparted. The books represent a single version of the possibilities inherent in the Sequence. We hope that publishers will be stimulated to offer educational videos, computer software, games, alternative books, websites, and other imaginative vehicles based on the Core Knowledge Sequence. Although sixth graders should be able to read this book on their own, you may also wish to read some passages aloud. You and your child can read the sections of this book in any order, depending on your child’s interests or depending on the topics your child is studying in school. You can skip from section to section and reread as much as your child likes. We encourage you to think of this book as a guidebook that opens the way to many paths you and your child can explore. These paths may lead to the library, to many other good books, and, if possible, to plays, museums, concerts, and other opportunities for knowledge and enrichment. In short, this guidebook recommends places to visit and describes what is important in those places, but only you and your child can make the actual visit, travel the streets, and climb the steps. V. WHAT YOU CAN DOTO HELP IMPROVE AMERICAN EDUCATION The first step for parents and teachers who are committed to reform is to be skeptical about oversimplified slogans like “critical thinking” and “learning to learn.” Such slogans are everywhere, and unfortunately for our schools, their partial insights have been elevated to the level of universal truths. For example: “What students learn is not important; rather, we must teach students to learn how to learn.” “The child, not the academic subject, is the true focus of education.” “Do not impose knowledge on children before they are developmentally ready to receive it.” “Do not bog children down in mere facts, but rather, teach critical-thinking skills.” Who has not heard these sentiments, so admirable and humane, and—up to a point—so true? But these positive sentiments in favor of “thinking skills” and “higher understanding” have been turned into negative sentiments against the teaching of important knowledge. Those who have entered the teaching profession over the past 40 years have been taught to scorn important knowledge as “mere facts” and to see the imparting of this knowledge as somehow injurious to children. Thus it has come about that many educators, armed with partially true slogans, have seemingly taken leave of common sense. Many parents and teachers have come to the conclusion that elementary education must strike a better balance between the development of the whole child and the more limited but fundamental duty of the school to ensure that all children master a core of knowledge and skills essential to their competence as learners in later grades. But these parents and teachers cannot act on their convictions without an agreed-upon, concrete sequence of knowledge. Our main motivation in developing the Core Knowledge Sequence and this book series has been to give parents and teachers something concrete to work with. It has been encouraging to see how many teachers have responded to the Core Knowledge reform effort. If you would like more information about the growing network of Core Knowledge schools, please call or write the Core Knowledge Foundation at the address given on p. xvii. Parents and teachers are urged to join in a grass-roots effort to strengthen our elementary schools. Start in your own school and district. Insist that your school clearly state the core of specific knowledge and skills that each child in a grade must learn. Whether your school’s core corresponds exactly to the Core Knowledge model is less important than the existence of some core—which, we hope, will be as solid, coherent, and challenging as the Core Knowledge Sequence has proven to be. Inform members of your community about the need for such a specific curriculum, and help make sure that your local school board members are independent-minded people who will insist that children have the benefit of a solid, specific, world-class curriculum in each grade. I bought this book to study for my CSET multiple subjects and I wish I bought it sooner! I bought this originally for the History/Social Science and Literature section, but if I would've known earlier that it had EVERY subject, then I would've used this, along with the 5th grade book in this series, to study for my CSET. This is a great guide for teachers and parents to teach their kids what they need to know for the school year. I would highly recommend this book. It's easy to follow and understand, and a 6th grader could read this book on his or her own and comprehend the topics with ease!

I did not know what to expect, or in what conditions the book would arrive . It was so very affordable. It arrived and it looks brand new. I've browsed through it and know that this will definitely help me help my granddaughter. But even I can learn and refresh my memory. The level of education today is far advanced from the 1950's and now I can learn while helping my granddaughter. It is a beautiful book and I look forward to reading it just for the Art and Science taught. The Math is exactly touching upon what she is learning. When stumped, I have the resources to find the way to explain and understand what her homework is about. Love the conditions of book. I recommend for anyone with a child in 6th grade. And I just had the brainstorm to see if I could find this. If I had known, I would have ordered every grade and saved myself a lot of stress. Thanks, it's a lifesaver.

My oldest daughter is finishing fifth grade, and we have used The Core Knowledge books for every year up to this point. Because we are homeschooling, we feel that reading through these books gives us confidence that we are keeping up with what might be expected of a student of a particular grade.Wanting to get a jump on the next level, my daughter read through What Your Sixth Grader Needs to Know over the past two weeks. You might want to be aware of some errors. In the math section on page 269, an addition problem is written with a minus sign, and the wrong answer is given in Step 2. At the top of page 271, we read, "In the following diagram line ZC is parallel to line TS, or line ZC is parallel to line TS." There is also an error in an illustration in the science section on page 328. Two cans of soda are pictured on scales with an earthly landscape behind each with a caption indicating that the can of soda would weigh less on the moon than it does on earth. We are missing a picture of a lighter can of soda with a moonscape behind it.I don't think the editing of this book is any worse than what we find typically in educational material, and the series is useful; but perhaps they ought to hire kids to proofread.:)

We use this book to supplement a homeschooling curriculum (SSAT prep) for a sixth grader who has been admitted to the top private school in the state. Because of how competitive it is to be admitted to this particular school, especially for a non-traditional student, this provides a starting point in his case. The book is well written and organized, and appears to provide a good foundation for all sixth graders.

This is a good book to cover all that is needed to know for sixth grade. It is common core based but not even as close that I have seen some print that is out there. I as a homeschooled use this as a base and let the children explore and research each subject that is in the book. This is great too for those people that are a little afraid to teach some of the subjects they break it down so that it is easy to understand.

I use this book as a guide for my sixth grader. The ideas presented are easy to understand and she enjoys reading the book on her own. If she is interested in a story we go to the library and get the book. If she is interested in a particular topic we go to the library and do some research. I own the entire series. This is the last book in the series. I don't know which guide I am going to use when she goes to the seventh grade.

These books were perfect for taking the CSET! I read through the fourth, fifth, and sixth grade versions and passed all three multiple subject sub tests on my first try. I recommend them to all my friends and they receive similar results. They are written for kids so the information is very easy to retain and understand!

As parents, we've all heard about the Common Core for learning standards most states have adopted.By using the "What Your ___ Grader Needs to Know" books to supplement formal school or homeschool learning, my child far exceeded on all the standardized tests. It doesn't take a lot of time to go over the material, and summers are a great time to do this; so are evenings and weekends.I found it was well worth it.

Even though there is almost unanimous consent that this book resembles Josh Lanyon's landmark Adrien English series, I think some doth protest too much because this one is similar in characters but lots more fun in a couple of respects.First of all, Sebastian Snow, for all the trouble he gets into and all the kinks in his brain, is an adorably cheeky character. His closeted, older, and supposedly ice-cold detective-pursuer-protector, Calvin Winter, is a neatly deconstructed semi-closeted ex-military who has a strict moral code--and weakness for helpless-looking, cheeky booksellers. He presents a nice counterbalance to Sebastian's increasingly estranged deeply-closeted detective boyfriend Neil, who really does provide some catalytic moments. The anchor here is Sebastian's father, who is neatly drawn and perfectly adept at solving everyone's problems with a word or two from his academic past. Most of all, this is all about Edgar Allen Poe, and if you know nothing or little about that great American man of letters, you will learn a great deal. And if you are a fan, you will see where this is going and get a kick out of it along the way.Even though I spotted the culprit immediately, I was happy to rollick along with this sometimes clueless bunch because this is such a neatly written, pleasantly satisfying, and fun book--and I just ordered the sequel.

2.5 starts rounded up to a 3.Sebastian the owner of an antique store is in a relationship with Neil a closeted police detective for 4 years. He's getting to the end of his rope waiting for Neil to step out of the closet. Just as he's decided that he's had enough things start happening around him regarding an auction that he participated in. In steps homicide detective Calvin another closeted detective. Murders, assaults and break-ins abound while Sebastian is instantly falling for Calvin.I liked the premise of the book but not so much the execution. I liked the mystery surrounding a possible rare Edgar Allan Poe book. I liked the wide range of characters, especially Max and Sebastian's dad. I didn't like that Sebastian was tired of being hidden but was willing to just jump into a relationship with another closeted cop while kicking Neil to the curb. I didn't like that Sebastian had sex with Calvin while still in a relationship with Neil. Cheating is a big No-No for me. I didn't like that Sebastian was being an amateur detective and causing more problems along the way. I didn't like that Calvin was instantly calling Sebastian intimate names but wasn't willing to be out with him.I'm hoping books 2 & 3 are a lot better.

Fantastic pacing! I really liked this book. I liked reading it. I liked not knowing what was going to happen next. That was fun for me.The perp I pegged, but I still wondered if I had the right of it.True, there are similarities to Josh Lanyon’s Adrien English Mysteries, but there are enough differences to make this book stand out on its own. (Although the character of Neil seemed too similar to Lanyon’s Jake).I really liked the MC whose POV we follow, Sebastian Snow. He’s a thirty something antiques dealer with an eye condition. He and Neil have been having issues for months due to Neil staying in the closet. Neither are happy.A nasty surprise in his store leads Sebastian to meet Det. Calvin Winters. Seb is instantly besotted with him. Murder, poetry, heartbreak, sleuthing, and a horrible date ensue and kept me swiping away until way past my bed time.I’m usually not a fan of the everyday citizen trolling about in police investigations, but here it worked for me. I’m looking forward to the next book to see how much further Poe can stray from Lanyon’s formula.

I absolutely adored this book. CS Poe's Sebastian Snow is a fantastic, well-developed character with quirks and intriguing motivations. I enjoyed his "home base" as an Antique dealer and his developing relationship with Detective Calvin Winter is going to be fantastic to watch in upcoming books. They had a great dynamic with enough push-pull to make things interesting. I really enjoyed reading this. I'm also very much looking forward to seeing what else CS Poe will be bringing to us in the future.Fantastically great writer with gorgeous characters and a tight, nice plot. All the makings of a wonderful relationship between an author and readers.

Five stars for mystery, five stars for the details of Seb's disability, particularly the joking, four stars for romance, five stars for the writing quality, and five stars for each of these two characters. I am really glad I bought the second book already.I am visually impaired, very differently from Sebastian, but yes, some similarities. And a lot of sympathy, and LOL's that he can joke about it.My one quibble is something another reviewer noted: the early and continuous endearments were excessive, and at least in this book we don't have any reason Calvin would do that. I am hoping for a revelation in book 2.

I really enjoyed the mystery in this novel. It was not easy to solve so I was kept guessing. I am already rereading and listening to it again to pick up things I missed the first time through. And I liked the characters. I like Sebastian and his dad and his dad's dog. I like Calvin. I liked Neil after he was no longer Sebastian's partner. Sure Sebastian does dumb things in his pursuit of satisfying his curiosity and desire to solve the mystery but he is an amateur. He is actually quite intelligent when he is not being too impulsive. The description of his medical ailment is quite interestimg. The author did her research.A good traditional mystery with a sweet gay romance.

The depth of the author's research combined with interesting story telling crafted this book into a magic carpet ride into the world of hedge funds. I have an MBA with a focus in finance, yet honestly this book did more for me than any finance textbook - and it was very interesting!I have to reiterate just how impressive the research was for this book, I read all of the footnotes because a sheer amount of fascinating information is held in the footnotes. If I ever write a book - I want to approach it like this author.

I really needed a book that summarised different investing approaches by world renowned figures and this book did it - perhaps even better than Michael Lewis's Liars Poker. Great summary of growth of hedge funds and how they've evolved. Don't think there's another book like it.If you want to learn on how big names invest this is the way to go

As the subtitle suggests, More Money Than God (MMTG) is about hedge funds. There are a variety of hedge fund styles, from "macro funds" like Soros' Quantum fund and Paul Tudor Jones' Tiger (and now Tudor) funds to quant focused funds like D.E. Shaw and Renaissance Technology. The book gives an interesting overview of the various funds, their founders and the bumps (or sometimes blowups) they encountered.I have been fascinated by Renaissance Technology for some time. Renaissance is probably the most successful quant fund, year after year, in existence. If I were twice as smart as I am, I would say that I aspire to be Jim Simmons (the founder of Renaissance) when I grow up. The book Quants and MMTG attempt brief profiles of Renaissance, which is also one of the most secretive funds in a very secretive industry.Among the things that are remarkable about Renaissance is how little information has leaked out about them. As a result, the profiles of Renaissance are shallow, at best. One of the themes in MMTG are the causes for various fund blow ups. The author makes the point that, from a formal point of view, risk management at Long Term Capital Management was actually very good. The problem is, VaR, ETL and any other measure you would like to pick is of no use if the instruments in your portfolio are, or become, illiquid and you can't sell them. The author relates a number of cases where funds became a major part of the market for some instrument. Or they were in a market where all of the players headed for the exits at the same time. As a result, when the market turned against them, they could not get out of their position. I have not seen any formal risk measure that will reflect this.We have actually seen a situation like this recently (May 2012), with J.P. Morgan and the "London Whale" who took huge positions and then could not get out of them (resulting in a loss of somewhere between 2 and 4 billion dollars, by some estimates). Once such a situation becomes apparent in the market, MMTG makes clear, the jackals will feed on the distressed fund. The only criticism I have for MMTG is that there are places in the book where the author goes on about how hedge funds should not be regulated because they present much less systemic risk than the highly leveraged investment banks. He makes some good points, but it gets old after a while. The author doesn't seem to notice that financial regulation has been captured by the very industry that it is supposed to regulate.

This is the magnum opus on the hedge fund industry. As other hedge fund related books seek to either vilify the industry or brazenly praise the uncanny good fortunes industry insiders - this book does neither - which I found refreshing and a strategic positioning of this work from "the rest."Sebastian Mallaby is currently the Paul Volcker Senior Fellow for International Economics at the Council on Foreign Relations. He's also a columnist at the WA Post and spent over a decade with The Economist responsible for international finance coverage - serving a bureau chief in Washington, Japan and southern Africa. He is the author of several noteworthy books on the political economy. This work is an epic contribution to the historical evolution of certain financial products and the global industry(s) spawned therefrom in primarily, the western world. Welcome to the hedge fund industry, including an amazing cast of characters, their thought processes, training, relationships and the outcome of their work - The Making of A New Elite - with More Money Than God.Admittedly, it is rare for me to dedicate myself to the reading of 400+ pages contained in any one volume, on any subject. Yet, the manner in which this book develops contains the unique qualities that inflame the desire within reader to come back for more. Incredibly well-written, researched, balanced and apolitical. This work is REQUIRED READING as an essential component in developing an understanding of global financial markets, risk assessment, risk management and the art of speculation. As I read the book, Mallaby makes some points that have been central themes of other authors (See The WSJ's Scott Patterson's - The QUANTS), regarding the miscues that fueled poor investment/risk management strategies. Listen to Mallaby to garner the essence of this observation as it relates to the "art of speculation" - "The art of speculation is to develop one insight that others have overlooked and then trade big on that small advantage." P.91 "After the 1971 debacle, Weymar set about rethinking his theory of the market. He had begun with an economist's faith in model building and data: Prices reflected the fundamental forces supply and demand, so if you could anticipate those things - you were your way to riches. But experience had taught him some humility. An exaggerated faith in data could turn out to be a curse, breeding the Sol of hubris that leads you into trading positions too big to be sustainable." "The real lesson of LTCM's failure was not that its approach to risk was too simple. It was that all attempts to be precise about risk are unavoidably brittle." P.231 (LTCM) Had misjudged the precision with which financial risk can be measured."p.245.The point is that an unrepentant belief in the quantitative modeling that provides that "one insight that others have overlooked and then trade big on it" can have enormous consequences in either capturing returns or accelerating a cataclysmic demise of the capital under management. How has that all worked out, in recent years? According to Mallaby, "Between 2000 and 2009, a total of about five thousand hedge funds went out of business, and not a single one required a taxpayer bailout."Ah yes, "bailouts" - what is Mallaby's take on this issue? Listen to the following: "Capitalism works only when institutions are forced to absorb the consequences of the risks that they take on. When banks can pocket the upside while spreading the cost of their failures, failure is almost certain." P.13. Mallaby is clearly not a proponent of "privatizing the gains and socializing the losses."What about our affection with history that drive financial and other forms of socio-economic modeling. Mallaby has some succinct insights: "Projections are based on historical prices, and history could be a false friend." P. 233. "In 1997, Merton and Scholes (LTCM) received the news that they had won the Nobel Prize for economics. The award was greeted as a vindication of the new finance: The inventors of the option-pricing model were being thanked for laying down a cornerstone of modern markets. By creating a formula to price risk, the winners had allowed it to be sliced, bundled, and traded' l thousand ways the fear of financial losses, which for centuries had acted as a brake on human endeavor, had been tamed by an equation." P.231. So, where does Mallaby leaves us at the end of this magnum opus? His analysis leads him to conclude "The worst thing about the crisis is that it is likely to be repeated." P. 377. However, to suggest that the hedge fund industry was the primary culprit in either the creation or magnitude of the Great Recession would be erroneous. Again, between 2000 and 2009, 5,000 hedge funds are to have ceased operations - none of which required a taxpayer bailout. Mallaby also takes a rather benign approach to the plausibility/practicality of regulating this industry ("The record suggests that financial regulation is genuinely difficult, and success cannot always be expected." P. 379).Yet, at the conclusion of this work, one quote from Mallaby continues to resonate with me: "It is the nonintuitive signals that often prove the most lucrative." p.302. However, the term "lucrative" as is as applicable to assessing risk and thereby avoiding potential losses, as it is to capturing returns on investment.Like I said, an epic contribution to the historical evolution of the hedge fund industry. An uncanny, incredibly thorough, balanced treatment - written in a way that is appropriate for both industry insiders, and the lay-person. A perfect volume for graduate coursework in finance -- one that focuses on human beings, as well as the quantitative financial services products they develop and deploy in the global markets today.
