At one crucial juncture he levels well-deserved criticism at Noam Chomsky for his reaction to 9/11. It’s about time someone on the left had the decency to repudiate the leftist attitude Walzer rejects there, the blinkered notion that we got what we deserved.Walzer makes the case for a sane global-minded commitment to human rights and shared prosperity. Rather than blather about replacing the nation-state in the name of some fool’s utopia, he focuses on how nation-states can help foster human flourishing across the globe — and what role a “decent left” should play in helping that happen.Above all, it is vitally important, especially with 2020 coming, to note that Walzer’s notion of the left confronts the world as it is now and also the abominations past so-called left regimes caused. He forthrightly condemns the toxic outgrowths of Marxist-Leninism that made the left synonymous, in the twentieth century, with dictatorship and massacre. The long trains of thought, and puritan sentence structure tend to put off most modern readers, and some of it is a bit like reading a math equation, but the logic is impeccable.- Some editting errors leave me shaking my head too often. It would not be so bad if they weren't so numerous. I bought this print for a semi-Pelagian friend, and I am afraid to give it to him because some of the errors are embarrasing. I will try to find a more carefully editted version of this classic work to give.

Item was a gift to an unbeliever, hoping it might clarify an understanding of Free Will and whether to accept or deny Jesus as Lord of their life. No verdict yet, but that is her choice. At least, she has this and other materials to help make a choice and leave it at that.

I am a "polyreader" in that unlike serial readers, I am usually reading 2 or more books at a time independent of my Bible reading. As such, it took me several months to get through this book while I began and finished several others. It was not the length of the book but it's complexity and profundity that made it necessary for me to read slowly, re-read sections. Often times I had to stop and meditate on what I just read. While I hesitate to say it is a difficult read I am confident in saying it most certainly is not a casual read. Because of the mental rigor required of me to follow and understand Edward's argumentation, I would often forego choosing Freedom of the Will in favor of my other reads that where less demanding. I did not simply want to get through this book I truly wanted to thoroughly understand Edward's argumentation so I would say I was more studying Freedom of the Will than simply reading it. This is why it took me months to get through it.Nevertheless, I was completely fascinated with the sheer brilliance of Edwards and thoroughly enjoyed the book. While I had read on the subject of human will and volition this was the first and only book I read on the subject. I am thankful that this was my first serious read on the subject as I found it confirming, reassuring and enlightening concerning my views of human and divine will. Edward's refutation of the Arminian, and shall I say, the more common notion of free will is simply brilliant. His cogent and thorough responses to stated and anticipated objections to the Calvinist position are well reasoned and explained. I recommend this book to anyone who truly endeavors to understand the nature of the will and it's relation to free moral agency and determinism.

Good stuff but a little dense and the language is hard to understand at times. This book was written in the early 1700's before the revolution so the language is dated. Mr. Edwards' style also makes comprehension a little more challenging also. If you can get past the language issues he has a lot of great points. This book was written to counter arguments made by another man so not having read the initial material that this book answers makes it hard to follow the rebuttal at times.Overall worth reading!

This volume merely a print out of the Edwards' work online, and it's incomplete! There is no info on edition, publication, no title page, etc, so it is impossible to site. It stops at Part IV section 7, and does not print the rest! The volume does not even mark section numbers and part numbers... It is very frustrating when there is no way to reference the work when you're writing a paper.

Jonathan Edwards through his divinely gifted intellect leads the reader into a purely reasoned exposition of freedom of will based on nature and necessity rather than the Arminian defense that for the will to be truly free it must not be influenced or constrained by necessity. He concludes his argument powerfully by illustrating that God's will being totally shaped by the necessity of his holiness and immutability of course does not detract one iota from His virtue, and so the greater necessity of man through his nature and moral influences toward virtue or vice does not detract all from his free will nor diminish the praise deserved for his virtues or the condemnation for his vices.

Wonderful to read the amazing teaching.

I thought this book would include ideas for activities to incorporate into working with children. It’s more of a textbook that describes processes and principles.

As an experienced clinician/psychologist who has just started classes for a certificate inart therapy, I found this little book to be a terrific compilation of introductory informationon art therapy. The book lives up to its' SOURCEBOOK title. The over-view of the subject isartfully written, easy to read and the resources are great for the beginner in this expandingfield of the art therapies. I think that all clinical,mental health service providers wouldbenefit from reading this book as they strive to offer treatment alternatives for their clients.If mental health practitioners did more exploring of alternative non-verbal ways into the mindof their clients, while sharing discoveries with their clients, we might all think more of takingour clients off of drugs and offering them art, music, theater, dance as ways to work throughtheir difficulties. I URGE ALL CLINICAL MENTAL HEALTH WORKERS TO CONSIDER WHAT THIS BOOK HASTO OFFER.Art and music and dance all awaken the sleeping/suffering brain and we must take responsibility forintroducing them to ourselves and our clients as ways we already have in us to create more peaceful, lessstressful and more enlightened ways of bringing wellness to our daily lives.

Gr 1-4-Blake presents a story of canine friendship on the Junior Iditarod Trail. Painter and Ugly are sled dogs living with their boy, Jake, on the Yukon River. They are an inseparable pair, playing together, eating out of the same bowl, and insisting on sleeping next to one another. They are also the fastest of the local racing dogs, and that leads to them being split up eventually and placed on different teams as the lead dogs. It's a lonely life for them, and they miss one another. However, during the 80-mile race, the dogs find a way to be together and to lead their teams to victory. Painter and Ugly are two sled dogs that have been inseparable all their lives. Jake is the boy who owns them and turns them loose on an island during the off-sled season, always bringing them food and water every day....along with lots of hugs and pets. Painter got his name when he was a pup and turned over a can of paint.......on his best friend, Ugly, so named because the paint spilled on him! The dogs are inseparable, even pulling their boxes close to each other so they can always be together.One day, Jake didn't come to the island and instead a strange man came in a canoe and took all the dogs away with him. When the canoe docked on the mainland, the whole team was split up to different people. Painter and Ugly went to different owners, howling all the way. They had never been apart and their hearts were breaking.Painter and Ugly were trained on different dog teams to compete in the Junior Iditarod, an eighty mile race to a point and then back, with boys as their sled masters. Both dogs had a difficult time adjusting to their new teams and owners, missing their friend. Each dog kept looking for the other, smelling the air and giving out their yips, calling to each other. Both dogs earned the lead position on their respective teams and mush their way to a delightful end.Robert J Blake did a superb job of describing the training and dynamics of a dog sled team and wove these details into a story about everlasting friendship between two dogs. The illustrations are dynamic and follow the story in detail. They capture the expressive faces of Painter and Ugly and make them seem an actuality. Any child or adult who loves dogs will quickly love Painter and Ugly.

About the Author

Immaculée Ilibagiza, the author of Left to Tell, Led by Faith, and Our Lady of Kibeho (with Steve Erwin), was born in Rwanda and studied electronic and mechanical engineering at the National University. She lost most of her family during the 1994 genocide. Four years later, she emigrated to the United States and soon began working at the United Nations in New York City. She is now a full-time public speaker and writer. In 2007 she established the Left to Tell Charitable Fund, which helps support Rwandan orphans, and was awarded the Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Reconciliation and Peace.Steve Erwin is a New York Times best-selling author and award-winning journalist. Once I started reading, I could not put this book down. I was v eager to hear what the Lord said to Segatashya. It is also heartwarming to hear how he spoke to the Lord, asked very candid questions and at times advised God. What a miracle the Lord performed in his life. For those who have doubts whether there is a God, this is your proof. This book is humbling when you see how the young man literally dropped his bags and followed God. Such faith and trust. Also, he was aware that he would live a short life but that life was a remarkable life. Rwanda has always been on my mind with the view that one day, I would like to visit. After reading this book, I definitely want to go esp to Kibeho. This book is for people of all faiths not only Christains or Catholics.Thank you Immacullee for sharing this wonderful story. So many if us Africans are unaware that we also have a sacred place on our continent. Thank God for sparing your life and giving you the possibility to spread his word of love, forgiveness and compassion. Who could be a more credible at teaching this to us than someone who has experienced such loss and suffering. May God continue to use you use mightily and bless you in immeasurable ways.

It is clear that Ilibagiza is a Catholic of great faith, and her book is a first-person recollection of her lifelong spiritual quest to meet an illiterate peasant boy from a remote region of Rwanda who purportedly met Jesus Christ and had many discussions with him. The story is filled with danger and tragedy, interspersed with powerful inspirational messages. I would imagine that anyone reading this book, and aware of the 1994 Rwandan genocide of the Tutsis by the Hutus, would experience an incredible wash of emotions - I know I did.As a young girl in Rwanda, Ilibagiza heard the story of Segatashya and the other visionaries of Kibeho from the local clergy and from her Father. These teenagers were receiving visits from both Jesus and Mary, and sharing their messages to tens of thousands of pilgrims who wanted to hear what they had to say. Enamored of Segatashya in particular, Ilibagiza wanted to make the long distance travel on foot to see and hear the boy, but at age 12, her father told her she was too young and would not take her on the long and arduous trip to a distant village. Her Father reported his experience of visiting Kibeho and the palpable feeling of Divine presence."How often in life can you find a place where thousands upon thousands of people are pressed together in one little area for days on end with very little food or water without any bickering or fighting? In Kibeho I scarcely heard a single word spoken in anger ... there is just no other place like it, not in Rwanda, not anywhere!" Dad gushed. "The loving presence of the Virgin Mary and the peace of her son have undoubtedly transformed Kibeho into a place unlike any I've seen in all my travels. The loving presence of God was felt everywhere!" (Loc. 669-673)Emmanuel Segatashya was a pagan farm boy with no schooling and no religious education. He was raised a "dirt-poor" peasant, and had hardly left his farm before his visitation and subsequent agreement with Jesus to tell his messages. The very first message that Segatashya clearly understood was a request. "And then the voice addressed me a third time, saying, `You there, child, if you are given a message to deliver to the world, will you deliver it?'" (Loc. 1069-1070). Very astutely, Segatashya said he would, if Jesus would grant him with the knowledge to speak intelligently to those who listened to him and especially if any had questions. (I personally think this is a VERY wise request.) It was clearly granted, as this young man who could not read and had never seen a Bible was quoting scripture and verse perfectly, advising clergy and laity alike.He was instructed to walk 30 miles from his farm to Kibeho where the other visionaries were sharing their messages from Mother Mary. Over the course of the next year he continued to be in nearly constant communication with Jesus and sometimes Mary. He shared many messages of love, faith, and focus, but also was also given a much darker foreboding of end times that foreshadowed the Rwandan genocide and his own death."Segatashya: A couple of weeks ago [during a vision on September 1, 1982] Jesus showed me people burning in a fire and wild animals that were tearing each other apart and devouring each other. Then he showed me people hacking each other to bits with machetes. Jesus didn't give me any specific explanation about what those terrifying images meant or when those things might happen. But you can all understand what he wanted to show me: it is how people are feeling toward one another, that more and more they hate one another and want to harm each other. Jesus wants all that to change. The only way for the world to change is through his love and forgiveness." (Loc. 1697-1702)Years later in 1992, as a college student at the National University of Rwanda, Ilibagiza learned by chance that Segatashya worked on campus at the university chapel and library as a handyman. She went out of her mind searching for him for years, and now there he was, at the same school she was attending. They became friends and he was able to answer many of the questions she had for years. Sadly, less than two years later, Rwanda's prophesied destruction took the lives and property of nearly a million people, including Segatashya, and nearly all of the recordings of the Visionaries of Kibeho were lost.Segatashya's visions have not yet been officially declared genuine by the Catholic Church, but three of the earliest Kibeho Visionaries were confirmed as Divinely Inspired by the Vatican. Continuing her work long after his death, Ilibagiza interviewed people who talked with Segatashya and examined him while he was in spiritual communication, and reviewed his messages in detail. None of these people have any doubt that he was genuine and his message was directly from Jesus. Her book, The Boy Who Met Jesus: Segatashya of Kibeho, is the compilation of her life-time support of Segatashya and his messages. As with many of these experiences and revelations, there are those that are inclined to believe and those that don't. In my way of thinking, it doesn't really matter what you say, or what you do, or what faith your follow - all that matters is what you hold in your heart while doing it. As Segatashya said, quoting Jesus:"No one is forced to believe in God, but still, God lives in every person's heart ... just follow your heart to God's love. Those who live in love will hear God's voice, because God's voice is a voice of love." (Loc. 861-863)

The organization of this book is such that it has to be read more than once to get the full impact of its message. Perhaps this was the author’s intention.The very first mission of Segatashya clearly demonstrates that God has a good sense of humor, something that I personally know from experience.The early messages, allegedly from Jesus, seem to imply, incorrectly, that all religions are equal, but this might just be a lack of accuracy in the interpretation of the original wording. Surely two religions cannot be equal if the “truth” revealed by one is the exact opposite of the “truth” claimed by the other. An example would be where the Christian religion forbids the intentional killing of an innocent human being versus Islam which seems to condones the random killing of infidels and Jews.The idea that God could forgive Satan is interesting but implausible. The pride of Satan makes it impossible for him to to be truly repentant of his rebellion against God.The final missionary messages of Segatashya in Congo are perfectly aligned with Catholic teachings. Here he lectured against sexual sins like polygamy, premarital sex, and homosexual acts, much to the displeasure of his audiences. Seemingly missing from the messages is the condemnation of contraception that is the indirect cause of divorce, abortion, and abuse of all kinds.It is remarkable that Segatashya and his whole family entered the Catholic Church when they began to understand God’s revelations.The unfortunate destruction of most records of the messages from Jesus during the Rwandan genocide may make it impossible for any definitive rulings of the authenticity of Segatashya’s visions. Nevertheless, the book is well worth reading. Any end of the world predictions should be taken to refer to the end of our individual lives. Repent and sin no more.

About the Author

Hal Tiné (scenic designer) is a nationally recognized scenic designer teaching in the Production Design Department at SCAD and has designed the School of Performing Arts productions of The Station, Carousel, Oliver Twist, Lend Me a Tenor, Guys and Dolls and The Marriage of Bette and Boo. His professional work includes the designs for the Broadway productions of The Trip Back Down and Jerry's Girls as well as many assistant design positions. In addition, he has designed more than 200 productions for off-Broadway, off-off-Broadway, regional theater, opera, and network and cable television. He has also designed exhibitions or special projects for the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Smithsonian American History Museum, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the New York Historical Society. He will design Verdi's Giovanna D'Arco for New York Grand Opera in Central Park this summer.

I guess it is safe to say my review will be semi-bias. The Author is a friend, teacher, and employer and lots of my work has found it's way between the covers of this edition. That being said... The knowledge she puts down onto paper is so very valuable. She knows the business and the art of the entertainment world in depth and shares not only her knowledge but also that of many people in the business. The first portion of the book is a revision of her original book. The second portion is all new and deals with digital means of communicating ideas with VectorWorks and Photoshop and SketchUp etc. Please note it is not a manual on how to use those programs but a book with many interviews with top people in the business and the various ways they use use digital media to help convey ideas to directors and other creatives on their projects. The book is full of many lifetimes of knowledge and wonderful samples of real work from feature films and theatre productions. This book is the best out there, that I have seen, for those who are students of design. Well, not only students but also those of us who have worked for many years in the business. It is a great resource to refresh your memory on how to do a difficult or not so common design task. Any set designer's bookshelves are not complete without this book on them. Congrats to Ms.Woodbridge on another hit!

A detailed and comprehensive resource for any draughtsman. I found it the most useful technical book in my library when I was learning how to draft. The book goes into a lot of detail with important aspects of draughting that other writers overlook (lettering, dimensioning) and is featuring some excellent drawings for those of you looking to get ideas and inspiration for your own draughting style. The CAD section is not very useful, as it only contains a very basic description of how the software works and some examples of how to lay out a technical drawing on it. Overall a great purchase!

A great resource to have while working on plating drafting. Provides ample amounts of visuals and examples to assist in the drafting process.

I bought this book for a drafting class. I have never drafted or taken a class on it and this book explained everything SO simply! I highly recommend it for beginners.

Wonderful

Excellent book and well updated for designers interested in hand drafting. As a graduate student of design I found the book well organized and comeprehensive, using many real examples by prominent designers in the United States. It touches little on CAD drafting.
