Review

“This essential, jargon-free volume issues clear-eyed prescriptions for drawing necessary moral distinctions in a complicated world.”—Publishers Weekly“Walzer’s . . . message is one of hope and potential. He reminds us that we can and must engage with our fellow citizens and global comrades, because we share their fate.”—Regina Munch, The Progressive“Displays many of the virtues that have long distinguished Walzer as a leading thinker about war—most notably his ability to frame clear ethical judgments that avoid the postures of both the saint and the cynic.”—Lawrence Douglas, Harper’s"Walzer has chosen a just fight for his polemic, and he fights justly—and to me his moral reasoning is clear and largely persuasive."—Tod Lindberg, Commentary“At a time when too many well-motivated leftists are trapped in what Michael Walzer characterizes as a complacent 'default position,' his case for leftist foreign-policy activism, buttressed by serious inquiry into a practical program of action, represents a significant accomplishment.”—David Goldfischer, Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver"Michael Walzer addresses an urgent issue that has not received the attention it deserves—the complex attitudes of American left-wing intellectuals toward American foreign policy in particular and American engagement with international affairs in general.  He is unafraid to criticize the American left for parochialism, insularity, and even isolationism. This lucid, passionate book is bound to stimulate vigorous debate."—Michael Ignatieff, President of Central European University, Budapest"Michael Walzer may be America's most challenging philosopher of liberalism today. We are indeed fortunate that his essays are written with so much passion, eloquence, and precision that his readers may rest assured to find themselves in edifying, and often inspiring, company."—Eric Alterman, columnist, The Nation"Michael Walzer’s search for a sensible left-wing approach to international wrongs is one of the compelling ventures in our political-philosophical life, and it is beautifully on display in these cogent and challenging essays."—Todd Gitlin, author of The Sixties: Years of Hope, Days of Rage"For those of us who grew up on Just and Unjust Wars, Michael Walzer is a beacon of honest, engaged debate. His call for a leftist foreign policy based on decency and humanity is a vitally important corrective to so many of his comrades who have lost their bearings in and on global politics."—Anne-Marie Slaughter, President and CEO, New America

I am a leftist, but I am frequently appalled by the unsubtlety of left ideologues. Michael Walzer may articulate views even conscientious conservatives (if such there be) would reject, let alone far-right or alt-right loons. But only the latter would dismiss his arguments out of hand, and that is because he is reasonable and practical, not given over to blind ideological sloganeering. At one crucial juncture he levels well-deserved criticism at Noam Chomsky for his reaction to 9/11. It’s about time someone on the left had the decency to repudiate the leftist attitude Walzer rejects there, the blinkered notion that we got what we deserved.Walzer makes the case for a sane global-minded commitment to human rights and shared prosperity. Rather than blather about replacing the nation-state in the name of some fool’s utopia, he focuses on how nation-states can help foster human flourishing across the globe — and what role a “decent left” should play in helping that happen.Above all, it is vitally important, especially with 2020 coming, to note that Walzer’s notion of the left confronts the world as it is now and also the abominations past so-called left regimes caused. He forthrightly condemns the toxic outgrowths of Marxist-Leninism that made the left synonymous, in the twentieth century, with dictatorship and massacre. A modern left must, he argues, reject, root and branch, the politics that eventuated in those horrors. This is the twenty-first century, and we must differentiate modern leftism from Marxism, Leninism, Stalinism, Maoism, et cetera: indeed, the final sentence of the book is “the left must begin again.” This could not be more relevant at the present historical moment, with stupidity and nativism ascendant, and leftist tolerance extended even to antihuman phenomena like jihadism. Walzer is an adult, a responsible adult, trying to hold the line against retrogressive provocateurs like Slavoj Žižek. He is also an old man. From his work may a new and wiser generation of leftists arise.

took off from prior book Just and Unjust Wars--even covered Syria--many angles that I had not considered

What a breath of fresh air. A liberal my entire life, I've recently been frustrated by the left's fecklessness on foreign policy and knee-jerk anti-Americanism, especially since most of American left has never lived outside the US. This is a wonderful antidote. Thank you Michael Walzer.
