You can safely skip the first ~20 pages if the story behind the book is less appealing, or you’d simply rather get down to business.Get Paid For Your Pad is a step-by-step introduction to the world of renting our your space on AirBnB. It certainly isn’t rocket science, and a few hours of messing around on the site would make your listing serviceable. Hearing the best practices from someone that’s made 6 figures on the site, however, is worth the time to read and set things up correctly.The authors correctly note the processes into making a listing work – not just the online listing, but the offline components of making a guest’s stay as perfect as possible. A number of clever hacks and tricks lit up the ‘I hadn’t thought of that’ light bulb, and it’s clear the step-by-step design has been well thought out. It’s well-formatted with bullet points and a number of colorful action / ‘do-this-now’ type boxes. It was published in August 2014, and the advice will stay relevant for years to come.

Purchased this wonderful piece of literary knowledge after listening to Jasper’s podcast. It’s day 1 and I’m already 2/3rds through the book. This is a comprehensive guide unlike anything that’s available regarding AirBnB, period.I had planned on long term rental strategies for my property and future properties, but had been slowly learning about the benefits of short term rentals. This book helps to affirm the facts that 1. AirBnB hosting can and is much more satisfying than long term rentals and 2. It’s very, very possible to make 2-3x the typical net returns versus a long term strategy.I am using this book to shape my business plan for each of my future AirBnB properties, and will be using it as a tool to continually reference. I have a few decorating books, some housekeeping books, I pin all kinds of articles on how to make a lovely bed.... Her exploration of language, both as a vehicle for communication, meaning and for an entry into the realm of the imagination, is powerful for artists in any field. When I am looking to share seminal books on the process of composition, I often tell them to get this book. The Language of Landscape regads to a very important subject - the new values that has composed the urban drawing - which has contributed a lot for the enviromental health of the nowadays cities. It is priceless for anyone doing SOC work or penetration testing that wants to understand the "why" not just the "how".This book really isn't written for the green analyst with little exposure and/or understanding of the content - THAT SAID, I encourage the novice to grabb it and give it a go. It will quickly open your eyes to any knowledge gaps while giving resources to learning more. Read it - stop when you hit something you don't know - then go learn about it and come back.For the experienced SOC pro, I'd be money there's tons in here you didn't know that you didn't know!! I've worked SOC for years and every time I pick this up, I learn something new or something is made more clear. Highly recommended!

Although the author does write as though submitting a whitepaper to the government in adding tons of detail, all of it is worth paying attention to. There is nothing in this book that isn't worth further investigation, as all of it is pure gold if you can understand what he is attempting to describe to you.The bar of entry is high for this book, but I would still highly recommend it to anyone who asked.Excellent work, Zalewski.

If you really want to understand the possibilities of passive surveillance, just get this now. I passively also learned more about hacking than pretty much any other book. The style of writing is great for a technical book, starting with low level techniques and slowly building in information, humor, and prose toward some pretty creative ideas about the nature of passive computing.

I have an extensive library of computer security books, and this is by far the most interesting, most novel, most entertaining computer security book I own. I am actually going through each of the footnotes, reading every paper mentioned in the book. Instead Zalewski has gone somewhere entirely new, showing how your computer leaks information to other parties without 99.999% of the population realizing it. I do network security for a living, am a privacy fanatic, and figured I'd learn a few new things. I was overwhelmed by the amount of new information I learned. Reading this book was a humbling yet exhilirating experience. Some of the sections are written so clearly a lay person could understand them, but other sections assume a great deal of knowledge of computer lore, particularly TCP/IP networking. Buy this book, then run silent, run deep.

Zalewski offers a nice overview of passive information extraction techniques. Each section covers one approach to the problem of determining something about someone's computer use without being detected. He provides an overview of the technology involved and then talks about how to exploit it.Sometimes his technology overviews are more suited to a neophyte, other times they correctly cover some arcane aspects of a standard. His writing style is familiar and easy going - no hard to read slogs in this book. Some of his analysis is dated and the techniques may not apply today, but they got me thinking of other things to look into.I learned a few things from this book. Anytime I can remain entertained while that happens I consider it a win.

Good start to understanding Windows.

The book is hard to follow but I really wish I could have followed it the subject matter is interesting

This book really didn't live up to expectations. I really should've sent it back and ate the shipping.

Fragmented and outdated. Like an old compiler, claim to do all but in fact falling far behind promise.

I have to admit I learned alot from this book. I think it could have been written a little "smoother". I agree with one reader when he says the first two chapters could have been put to better use. If you use Microsofts Masm assembler, then you may be somewhat lost. I know of at least two instances where he refers you to another section to configure your programs in Masm, but, there is no reference to Masm in these sections. The appendices are excellent. I must admit this is the only book of its kind I have been able to find but in most areas he just skims the surface. He doesn't even tell you the proper way to retrieve a key stroke using Windows routines. In all honesty, "Its better than Nothing"..! I know more now than I did...

Assembly language is important - you really need it whena) your compiler is producing instructions different to those you intended with your higher-level languageb) debugging system-level codec) disassembling some binary file that has no source coded) presented with a crash address alone.e) You might even need to write a little assembly when what you are doing simply cannot be written in a higher level language.There are some excellent books to help learn assembly, and chapters in books and articles by the likes of Pietrek and Robbins.Kauler is different. He believes you should write your Windows GUI programs straight in assembler - dialogs, menus, windows and all. He thinks this is a good way to write Windows programs. Anybody who wants to follow his advice does not need this book, he needs to learn about modern tools. Modern compilers are really good, and it is ludicrous to suggest replacing their work with yours.Having undermined the central premise of this book, it is worth commenting on the content. Firstly, it is very heavy going, and somehow clunky. I don't know if it is the font, page layout, or simply trying to cover too much too quickly, but I had to read each paragraph a few times to understand what was being said here. The book has clearly been rehashed from previous Kauler literature, even leaving in the same screen shots from 1992! Several chapters have rambling overviews of Windows architecture or the boot up process, and quite frankly, other books cover this far better. What this stuff has to do with assembly is not explained.He also seems to be stuck in a time warp, by writing most of his code in 16-bit assembly. There was a time, when I was still young, when you had no choice - 32-bit Windows was still a pipedream. But already for several years this has been obsolete, and the only need to know it is when poking around in the 16-bit underworld of 95, but heaven forbid actually programming in it!I have to admit that there are some gems here - Kauler has prised open some of the cracks in the Win95 OS, and revealed some amazing tricks. Among them are using DOS interrupts to gain access to low-level services and using CallGates to run Ring0 code from Ring3. However, even this gem is written cock-eyed, with the main program in 16-bit code, and the CallGate callback in 32-bits! Does he want nobody to understand him?And all this to expose the Win9x OS! It still exists, but is becoming more and more obsolete. XP Home is already upon us, and I doubt any home PCs will be sold with the 9x family installed ever again. The kind of people who want to dig into the OS migrated to NT years ago, while Kauler is still stuck in the 9x days, blinking in denial as he emerges from a 16-bit slumber.Not for me such stuff. Avoid this book, unless you are a real 9x underworld junkie, think in assembly, have more that just a dash of Windows 3.1 nostalgia, and yearn for the good old days of 16-bit programming.

It is indeed pleasing to see work of this calibre coming from fellow countrymen (Australia). Barry's book opens doors that were previously either invisible or firmly closed in the eyes of MS-DOS real mode assembly programmers. His approach of 'begin at the beginning' makes sure that the reader has the basics before attempting to absorb new information. For those who like to scan through the pages, you may reach the conclusion that the contents are daunting. If you read from the beginning however, you discover that whilst the learning curve is STEEP, and there is a LOT of information to absorb, the layout and approach is logical and not half as difficult as first impressions. It is also pleasing to see that Barry appreciates that some of the material, whilst useful and neccessary, is very dry reading. The injection of a little humor breaks what would otherwise be boring. (eg: pp99 "ALL OF THIS STUFF DOWN TO CREATEWIN IS PRETTY HORRIBLE, SO LET YOUR EYES GLAZE OVER AND READ QUICKLY ONWARD TO CREATEWIN:"). In conclusion, whilst not a complete reference on all matters regarding assembly language programming in the 'Windows' environment, this book certainly gives you the feeling of having been given the 'rosetta stone'. With the provided further reading references, an MS-DOS programmer should be able to effiencently convert to the new world of 'Windows'.

This book is NOT for everybody. But if you need to extract maximum performance from Windows 95/98, it is indispensible eg, Games, SCSI i/face, real-time I/O, etc. In conjunction with Walter Oney's "System's Programming for Windows 95" it is unbeatable. The appendix describing the Microsoft DPMI extensions is worth the price. It is the only work that addresses: TSRs with Windows, Call gate thunking and shared VM memory areas. (If you don't understand what these mean, this book is not for you; if you do then you will appreciate their importance and indispensibility for high performance apps, particularly I/O oriented ones.) I found Kauler's description of Assembly implementation of OOP innards most illuminating. The 1st 2 book chapters could be culled substantially, to a summary of x86 architecture & Assembly, and the space better used for subsequent chapters where the descriptions are somewhat thin. Since the number of books on low level Assembly hacking into Windows is just 1, and Ring 0 Assembly is the only way to handle multiple CDRs, RAID array, multi-DAT or other high throughput I/O apps -- this book stands alone, regardless of its warts. Oney's book lays out VxDs, Kauler's fills in the key gaps for direct DPMI calls, fast thunking, VM sharing and working through DOS REAL Real Mode (not V86). Kauler's irreverent style is somewhat flippant for this serious a topic.

I have over 50 books on submarines and more 30 DVDs/ Blu-Rays of submarines.This book is outstanding scholarship. A well-researched reference book done by a talented writer - that reads like a novel.I could not put it down. The best book that was ever been written on the early submarine.Any professional submariner must have this book.I am sure that Admiral Rickover, God Bless Him, would find it excellent as well.

I classify Lawrence Goldstone's book entitled GOING DEEP as one of the most fantastic and interesting reads on history of the Gilded Age viva the completion of the invention and delivery of the attack submarines. He makes history interesting and complex!!!!!!!!! I would recommend this book to history bluffs and also to people that are interested in an excellent read and a well-researched book that reveals why history is history!!!!!!!!!

One of the stranger tales of late 19th Century United States. If the desire is to read the astonishing accomplishment of inventing what we now know to be the classic submarine of the first and second world wars, this book covers the technical challenges. If the desire is to learn about the politics and bureaucracy of the then War department, and the cutthroat business practices of "The Gilded Age" entrepreneurs, this account delves into the painfully convoluted machinations almost to the exclusion of the technical details of boat design.Books like these are ever so enlightening, and they really supplement with depth any grade-school pedantry about history.

Good detail from day one of the development of the modern submarine. I would have liked to have learned more about parallel developments in other countries and more about the human factors related to living in a submarine for extended periods.

For any fan of submarine books, this is the base. How it all began. It's not big on fighting boats, but gets you the basics on how it all began. 4 Stars, good read. Not the most exciting, but information is packed in every chapter.

I had a hard time with the first 3 -4 chapters but as it got closer to 1880 it got better , very interesting.

Interesting background on development of submarine and getting it accepted by the US Navy. Not very interestingly told, however.

Interesting but probably more detail than most want to know.

I do not have time to eloquently delve into the many ways this sexist and subtly misogynistic book slut shames women, but I assure you, Emily Post and some common sense are a far better bet than this literary excretion. The bawdy content is certainly modern... in that it is the TMZ guide to etiquette. If you like the female presentation and appearance being criticised in the format of "The Soup", this is the book for you. The only resemblance any part of this book bore to being "classy" is the cover color reminiscent of a Tiffany box. Otherwise, I'm afraid you're out of luck.

I guess what Derek is trying to say is that it's easy to be classy if you compare yourself to a drug addict, poverty stricken, mentally Ill, or handicap person. Derek's book made me feel sick to my stomach. I'm glad he is not a parental or married.

Cheeky, clever, entertaining and insightful, Derek Blasberg's guide on how to be a cool, modern lady is worth the read. He gives a candid perspective on how to style yourself, how to act in the company of others and how to avoid (or at least be able to recover from) gaffes, other embarrassing situations and temptations. Although he is not a female himself, he certainly knows more than many others about how to distinguish a lady from a tramp and shows you how to avoid falling into the latter category.

I was very excited about this book. As a recent graduate of college I have been trying to advocate to peers and younger sorority sisters the importance of acting like a lady- still having fun but doing it in a classy way. Now although there were certain aspects of this book I like and agree with I did not find it very informative for anyone over 17, but I would love it for my younger sister who is about to enter college. It is also a little dry and not an easy fun read. The author has witty comments but it could be better. I also thought that some of the comments were geared towards the wealthy high-end California party hoppers. For example why do I need to know the proper way to wear clothes that have been donated to me from a boutique - there are no photographers following me around. I also thought there were certain things that the author considered class that is not classy: for example he said it was ok to have super thin eyebrows.... what- that is the most county fair style I have ever heard of.One sentence review: A good starter read for a younger sister (age 16-19), but may have to read in multiple sittings.

highly recommend for any teenager and any woman of any age. Explains why you should and should not wear certain things, and how you are presenting yourself.

I love this book. Derek says it how it is. Obvious but the pictures helped with clarifying the language used. It's easy to claim you don't do something and then you review the picture of the "don't" and realize... whoops! Great read!

Not what I was expecting. It's set up like a manual which is fine, but it's not an easy read as it's kind of all over the place. I still love Derek Balsberg though!! I didn't read but maybe a fourth of the book and I was over it. Boring.

"The Great Gatsby" is my all-time favorite novel, so I expected a lot out of Sara Benincasa's modern day version of Fitzgerald's classic, but she crafted a novel that met and exceeded my high expectations! The characters are brilliantly developed, especially the ones that you love to hate. The title of this book, "Great", says it all...it is an impeccable read, and I can't wait to dive into other by this author!

Great by Sara Benincasa is a reimagining of The Great Gatsby set in the modern day Hamptons. Great introduces teenage Naomi Rye who arrives in the Hamptons to spend the summer with her celebrity chef mother. She becomes transfixed by her mysterious neighbor Jacinta, who seems to be the Hampton's IT girl. When she is not dishing in her blog about the Hampton glitterati, Jacinata is planning lavish parties that are the talk of the town. Naomi, who expected the summer to be a bore, finds herself with a hot boyfriend and a new best friend who is the most glamorous teen in the Hamptons. But Jacinta, like Jay Gatsby, is hiding secrets and scandal is on the horizon. Changing the gender of the classic main character is not often done in YA classic connections, but it works well in Great. The basic structure of the story remains the same with the outside narrator telling the tale. Inviting a comparison with the original should make for lively discussion.

LOVE. The essence of the story line may have had connections to Gatsby (a personal favorite of mine) but the lense, language, and perspective are so unique and special to this story. I couldn't put it down and have actually read it twice to pick up on what I missed. Smartly written and clever as hell.

A great take on a updated version on the classic Great Gatsby. Not much has changed in the way people treat people/view themselves (sadly) and others. I do however think it will give the younger generation a greater appreciation on the human social condition. Sara Benincasa did a great job taking the essence of old characters and give them new life 90 years later.

Great is a modern retelling of The Great Gatsby. It’s an entertaining book with memorable characters and page-turning drama. I loved it & highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun read!

Even though I'm not a YA reader, I really enjoyed this adaptation from the Fitzgerald classic. Benincasa manages to craft a story that is both loyal to Gatsby and also stands well on its own two legs in a way that I imagine modern readers, especially YA readers, will still relate to.

Pretty good rendition with a great twist. Just like in The Great Gatsby I wished they focused on Jacinta and Delilah's relationship. Ialways wanted to hear a star studded story like this from my hometown.

excellent work by one of my favorite young adult authors. she does a terrific job of turning the Great Gatsby into something fresh, new and exciting for young adult readers.
