This book is amazing. We got it from the library and I realized I couldn't build my children's library without it. It has become one of their favorite books ever!! Well written and illustrated, it's timeless.

Such a FUN Thanksgiving book. Story is enjoyable and funny. Illustrations "steal the show."

I really like this book. It is a playful book written from a child's perspective. The boy tells you his rules for Thanksgiving. He talks about how to quickly greet your relatives and describes how to get the most out of the Thanksgiving buffet. It ends with him talking about how to hug all of your relatives after the big meal, but that his hugs were a little too tight on full tummies so now he gives everyone the "Overeater's Special" which is a simple, light peck on the cheek. This is a very humorous book and I can't imagine a child not loving to read it every Thanksgiving!

This is the exact type of book I was looking for to read to my son. This book is so cute and I love the pictures.Amazing! I am very excited to read this book to my son up until Thanksgiving.It's a very nice quality book and the price is great.

I can't wait to read this. Percy Isacc Gifford commands it's readers to eat EVERYTHING! This story is fun and would be a great addition to any classroom library.

I had no idea what library binding was, and everyone had different opinions as to what it was.Just to be clear, this book is a hardcover book, and it comes with a coordinating dust jacket. In 1971 Ted Chapin was a 20-year old college student who found a way to wangle a job as a production assistant (gofer) on FOLLIES and get college credit for it. No doubt, Chapin's family connections helped him a great deal (which he readily admits) and I'm sure that because of it he was treated with far more respect than the average gofer. But connections or not, he was still a kid in love with the theatre. Chapin's youthful enthusiasm and hero worship shine through the book. The part that really melted my heart was when realizes he's the first person to type the lyrics for a new Sondheim song, "I'm Still Here." And you realize that even though today Chapin is powerful and successful, he still takes great pride in having been the first person to type the lyrics for "I'm Still Here."At the time of FOLLIES it was not unusual for shows to go into rehearsal with large sections of the script (the ending, for example) marked, "To Be Written." (Things are not like that today.) There are changes that happen in rehearsals, such as taking away "Losing My Mind" from Alexis Smith and giving it to Dorothy Collins. (It finally worked!) We see the changes that the show makes in its Boston tryout and the differences they make. There are great photos of the stars in the wigs and costumes that didn't work and were discarded. We read about the dramatic changes that happen when "Can That Boy Foxtrot" gets replaced by "I'm Still Here" and "Uptown and Downtown" gets replaced by "Lucy and Jessie." Then there were the trials of Alexis Smith losing her voice and Gene Nelson's son becoming involved in a life-threatening situation on the West Coast. Could the understudies go on? They've had no rehearsal at all! The cast was composed mostly of older people who had difficulty remembering lines and learning dance routines, in addition to being terrified to move on Boris Aronson's severely raked stage.I liked all the detail that Chapin includes in the book, like what the show was like from the orchestra pit, how the lyric sheets were punctuated, visits to the scene and costume workshops, etc. Chapin vividly presents a large cast of characters. I got a kick out of old Ethel Shutta getting off a few zingers at Fifi D'Orsay's expense. Early in rehearsals Yvonne DeCarlo appears to take a shine to young Chapin and he becomes her frequent escort, much to the horror of Hal Prince and Stephen Sondheim. Dorothy Collins supposedly told her to "Keep your hands off that nice young man." We see Alexis Smith working with everything she's got to make the show her own, all the while denying that she's put very much effort into her career. There's a cameo by Angela Lansbury (who was trying out PRETTYBELLE in Boston while FOLLIES was there for its tryout). Lansbury asks DeCarlo after seeing a matinee if this was her first time on stage. DeCarlo later explains it by saying that Angie must have been in a state of shock over her own show's premature closing.FOLLIES went on to become a landmark in the American theatre, running nearly two years, despite losing its entire investment. FOLLIES still sparks arguments today. Was it brilliant? Or a pretentious mess? This book is a great addition to the FOLLIES legend. Chapin obviously took great joy in simply being there and that joy shines through the pages of this book. Whether you're a FOLLIES fan or not (and I'm not), this book is a must-read for theatre buffs.

Chapin had a director's-side seat at the creation and launch of, um, my favorite show, and he was taking notes all the while. There's nothing like this: instructive and illuminating and enjoyable all at once. Makes you wish we had a similar circumstance/book for someone who was there while "Oedipus Rex" was being rehearsed.

The immense immediacy of Ted Chapin's "Follies" memoir puts you right in the middle of a chaotic rehearsal period. Alas, the era Chapin remembers is as far gone to us as the era "Follies" intended to evoke. He rarely pauses for breath as he takes us through the thrilling rehearsal period of a musical with cast that mixed young and old and a range of temperaments. The parts where he talks about Yvonne DeCarlo are both fascinating and a little weird.Unintentionally, Chapin puts his finger on what exactly was wrong with "Follies" 33 years ago -- the creators never seemed to have a clear, hit-your-head-with-a-hammer conception of what it all meant. The musical seemed to create itself, and the result baffled as many people as it pleased. The creators even sought out a Harvard undergrad who had written an essay on the show during its Boston tryout. (Read the book to find out who the undergrad was, but rest assured it wasn't Ted Kaczynski.) I was too young to see it, but I really, really wish I was there.The characters of the actors and creative team come through, with the possible exception of Jim Goldman, who seemed to have distanced himself from the cast. Some surprises: Hal Prince gave line readings to the actors, and even stars making a lot of money for the time could routinely make mistakes. Nevertheless, Chapin has a profound sense of decency and understanding, and he never paints any of these people in an overly negative way.Another thing that comes through in Chapin's memoir is his audacious efficiency. Based on this account, Chapin was a dream gofer, coordinating the demands of a script that just kept spinning out of control. I could never have done it. Hats off.While reading the book, I often found myself singing the "Follies" score aloud; it is brilliant, and I'll never understand why critics of the time dismissed Stephen Sondheim's music. Neither, I suspect, did Chapin. For theater buffs, this book will make you yearn to head to your local little theater group and jump right in.

This book has taken my straight chemical nutrient approach of hydroponics to a new level. The use of worm casting teas has allowed my nutrients to be effective over a wider range of concentration and pH. A huge step at getting 'back to nature' with hydroponics. I would recommend this highly.

I really hate to give the book a 1-star rating. I own a number of Ms. Yin-Fei Lo's other books (physical copies) and like them very much, but I have to add my complaint to the others about the publisher's callous disregard for blatant typos that make the Kindle version unusable.Most obviously, none of the fractions in the ingredients list display properly. For the most part, they show up only as the "fraction line", without numbers at all, though if I recall correctly, a few do display the denominator, but without the numerators! And it's not just fractions, regular numbers separated by hyphens are also screwed up. Ingredient quantities like (what I assume should be) "4-5 quarts water" for example, display without the first two characters at all (i.e., " 5 quarts water"). In many cases one can make an educated guess as to the missing number, but I wasn't about to keep the book - even though it's very inexpensive right now on sale - with such egregious formatting problems that have gone unresolved for at least 3 years.I'll also note that there at least appear to be other errors, though they're less obvious, and could conceivably just be unusual quantities of ingredients. But I do seriously question the ingredients entry in the "Chicken Stock" recipe, for example (the only one I noticed before returning the book for a refund), which calls for " 4 ounces" of coriander sprigs. Seriously? Multiple OUNCES? I live in NYC, which I mention only because we have many thoroughly authentic Chinese restaurants as well as the more generally common Americanized sort, and I've been eating Chinese food regularly and frequently since I was a kid (45 years ago), but I've never once tasted chicken broth with as strong an obvious flavor of coriander as that amount would give in the quantity of stock the recipe makes. If the author were unknown to me, I might just assume it was an "unusual" recipe, but as far as I've ever seen, Ms. Yin Fei-Lo's recipes are within "generally expected parameters", so in this case I can only assume it's some sort of full-blown typographical error rather than even just a problem with the conversion from physical to e-book format.In short, the Kindle ebook is a sad waste of bytes and pixels...

I love this book (I have the hardcover and kindle editions), but unfortunately the kindle edition STILL, after over a year, does not display fractions. Why does quality control suck so badly on so many kindle books?Update: prompted by another review, I looked at the book again. It looks like they have corrected the fractions issue!!! Too bad it took so long, but i’m happy now.

This cookbook, like most of Eileen Yin-Fei Lo's cookbooks, is focused on authentic Chinese cuisine and is not a Chinese takeout cookbook. As the book does not cut corners, it includes the presence of some Chinese ingredients which may be difficult to find outside an Asian supermarket. For example, the cookbook includes a number of recipes which would be considered banquet or special occasion foods and include ingredients such as Shark's Fin and Bird's Nest. Nevertheless, this book does include a number of everyday recipes such as Ma Po Tofu and Hunan Hot and Spicy Shrimp, which can be made after a trip to the Asian foods aisle of most supermarkets, and provides useful recipes for Chinese sauces, such as XO sauce, which are usually purchased prepared. This cookbook is definitely geared toward people who are more accustomed to traditional Chinese cooking or are interested in how Chinese food is outside the local takeout place. Mastering the Art of Chinese Cooking includes a number of beautiful pictures of the prepared food and provides a taste of what Chinese home cooking can really be like.

I write this review as one who has been stir frying for many years, but never had a real Chinese cookbook, nor ever learned from anyone how to cook Chinese in an authentic way. I heard about this book on The Splendid Table podcast as a recommendation for the book to get to really learn how to cook authentic Chinese. I ordered it immediately, and holy cow, the lady on the show was right!I have no idea how it compares to other books about learning to cook Chinese, but this is exactly what I've been wanting for years but never bothered to look for.It's not just recipes - it's the philosophy of various kinds of Chinese cooking set in the cultural context from which it came, with lucid, informative, and fun reasonings and descriptions of what individual ingredients do, why they're used, and how they are working with the other ingredients to bring out flavors, textures, and aromas.From the basics of how to make broth and cook rice to highly advanced dishes, she covers a huge range of styles from different geographies, and makes it all sing with her word pictures and personal stories and observations.It's also beautifully made - this is a seriously heavy hardback book with glorious full-color photographs. A work of art by itself.Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn how to cook in a Chinese style, or who just wants to know more about the hows and whys of Chinese food.

Great book! Really delves into some of the nuances that create genuine and successful Chinese dishes. It's also a great read to immerse yourself into some of the cultural history behind Chinese cuisine.

Up until now I have read and tried many self improvement books. I am an spiritual follower of Jesus however I have been always open to learn and improve myself. Everything I read before told me "what to do or what to be" but never "how to do it". This book has now put me in the path of "how to" achieve peace and happiness. It's insights are surreal and now I have a simple yet powerful tool to achieve self-control, happiness, awareness and most of all "to start living life for the first time in 47 years!". simple, yet profound...Thich Nhat Hanh is a magical philosopher and writer... words are barely able to convey the power and breadth of ideas, written with such concise simplicity, in his masterful writings. he stands among the great philosophers and spiritual teachers of all time and he is one of the rare masters who can articulate with such peaceful, easy clarity.25 years ago, i was introduced to his philosophy and writing with a gift of "the miracle of mindfulness" and have resonated and grown continually with his teachings of living in the "present" ever since... once you read it and get it, you will never forget and never be the same... you can not erase it...it is with you forever...and, of course, washing dishes will never be the same.he is truly inspiring by articulating how to be "present" with such ease and understanding... his writing is for all; the academic, the layman, the advanced psychological professional, the veteran, the novice, etc. there is no one that can not relate to and benefit from his teachings and exercises, if you will, on being mindful and present (yes, redundant to many). my belief is there is more power in being "present", than any other single psychological philosophy... and Thich Nhat Hanh articulates it and teaches "ease without effort" ... always succinct and his writing is as magical as his concepts.i just loaned out "the miracle of mindfulness" to a friend who is either in a state of anxiety in the "future" or a state of depression in the "past" ... rarely, if ever, productively at peace in the "present" ... she left with it, eager and optimistic to begin the process of healing and advancing her psychology to living always in the present...in my mind, "you are here" furthers the philosophy of mindfulness and living joyfully, peacefully, and entirely fulfilled by actively living in the "present"...the enormity of self-improvement philosophers and teachers is overwhelming... choices of books are endless... but, if you want a simple, yet profound easy to read author, than you would be hard pressed to beat Thich Nhat Hanh.with deepest gratitude, Thank you, Thich Nhat Hanh and all who helped bring you and "You Are Here" to me and to others whom i will share it with...most sincerely, deke . :-)

I don't think I am going to be able to say anything about Thich Nhat Hanh that hasn't been said before but I can let you know about my experience. I started attending a local Zen Center to help me with meditation. I had passing familiarity with some of the concepts discussed in this book but this is a highly accessible format. I would say this is a great introduction and introduces some more advanced concepts if you want to dive dealer.

The magic of the present moment is alive and breathing in this book. It's like reading the transcript of one of Thich Nhat Hanh's talks. Great bedside book and a wonderful introductory to one of the fundamental aspects of practicing buddhism.

So far, I've read 5 of Thich Nhat Hanh's books. All have been helpful and eyeopening. This one was the easiest and most pleasant to read (and by far the most helpful). He covers all of the basics. Great for beginners to the path and for those who have been on the road for awhile. I loved this book, and its many positive messages and techniques, so much that I bought a copy for a co-worker.

Mr. Hanh writes in layman terms so it is pretty easy to understand the concepts and ideas he talks about.As soon as I finished this book, I wanted to start practicing mindfulness meditation and I wanted to start living mindfully!!

AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ!! You will soon learn the necessity and joy of living in the present moment and be amazed to discover that a good many people actually sleepwalk through life, not realizing to appreciate each moment as it unfolds. Buddhist Monk Thich Nhat Hanh shows us the way to breathe properly and provides us simple awareness exercises to enrich our lives.

If you are a Thich Nhat Hanh fan....then this is a MUST. This is one of my FAVORITES....It puts me in a sacred space, and reminds me that what is important is in this moment right now. If I'm having stress, all I have to do is listen to this and I immediately start focusing on my breath. This CD will stay in my car, so that I can take it everywhere!! A must have.
