Outside In is a great book for businesses and other organizations who want to understand and utilize the power of customer experience. If your company has any kind of interaction (digital, over-the-phone, face-to-face, or otherwise), you will benefit from applying the principles it contains to your business.But that's not why I bought the book. I've taking a different perspective, that of a non-profit volunteer leader who wants to provide great GUEST services to our "customers." From my viewpoint, Outside In is an excellent guide to first introducing, and then providing a road map, for organizations who want to focus on providing a WOW! Guest experience program.As a student of Guest Experiences, I was well aware of the book before its publication, reading a sample chapter and following the discussion by its authors Harley Manning and Kerry Bodine on the Forrester blog. I pre-ordered it from Amazon, and was delighted when it showed up one day after the book's release. After skimming the contents, I promptly canceled the rest of my day's appointments and read the book through.I won't duplicate the table of contents here - that's what "Look Inside" is for. I'll just say that after one reading, I've began to go back through with a pen and highlighter. The book is marked up, notes are in the margin, and it looks like a highlighter has run wild.It's that good - and a practical tool for your use.I will be using this in my own organization, putting it to use in a consulting role, and referring it to all my clients. Want to understand the Guest (er, customer) experience? Order it today, put it into practice tomorrow.

I can understand that many businesses have difficulties in moulding to their customers and understanding them but actually constructing an elaborate process to compensate for this is beyond the scope and budget of most smaller and medium sized businesses. In the late 80's I worked for a large, well-known multiline insurance conglomerate. They--like many of their competitors--had standard operating procedures to which the whole industry subscribed, like the way insurance was sold and serviced through agents, how claims were handled, etc. In the early 90's, I went to work for Progressive Insurance. It was hard for me to recognize Progressive's procedures as being even in the same industry because they did everything entirely differently and were proud of it, thank you! And that attitude was infectious across the whole organization, as--* Claims reps could print checks in the back of their Immediate Response vehicles at the scene of an accident* Consumers could call in and answer one set of underwriting questions and get the Progressive quote AND 3 additional competitive quotes at the same time* The beginnings of the Snapshot program that tracked vehicle-driving data emerged first in the late 90'sThese innovations at the time were called 're-engineering' and they were upsetting to the rest of the industry. It was like Progressive was breaking the code and giving customers something that maybe everyone else would be forced to offer down the road as a result. And now they even poke fun at those hapless competitors in their commercials with the two bumbling idiots who come to Flo's store and wish their companies did what Progressive does."Outside In" chronicles the fact that those kinds of innovations are now, in fact, forcing organizations to finally respond with new breeds of customer experiences. According to authors Harley Manning and Kerry Bodine, we have only recently ... finally ... entered what they call The Age of the Customer in 2010. In each transition up to now, new companies with very different strategies had led the way into new business practices and perceptions. This book is quite effective in showing how this desire to really engage the customer is now happening ... it's just a little surprising that it has taken so long to happen.The book reminded me a lot of the book "The Social Organization" written in 2011 by two Gartner employees. That book showcased many of their clients and how they were gradually embracing social media. It was somewhat general and presented many case studies about how and why those companies were helping employees, partners and clients to address their respective needs by using social software. The message was that -- while technology was the enabler -- business needs and people working together was what made it really work and made it important. "Outside In" uses a similar approach in defining a parallel need to focus on customers. This book takes advantage of the many clients Gartner has worked with to show patterns in the way they're making the customer experience paramount. They use many, many short customer stories, punctuated by insights and observations to drive home the fact that more and more companies are seeing the benefit of embracing the customer. It's like our research consultancies are telling us with books like these -- these changes are no longer one-off's. If you haven't started to think this way, you'd better because many of your competitors are.It felt a little manipulative in the way they shifted the complexity and levels of engagement needed in the three parts of the book. In Part I (The Value of the Customer Experience) they showed at a high level how executives took on the role of improving the customer experience and seemingly almost single-handedly made huge changes in their organizations. At points, I found myself asking 'Is that all there is to it?' Then in Part II (The Six Disciplines of Customer Experience) the strategies, planning, analysis, change management, etc. became a bit more detailed and realistic. 'No, the answer is. It's not as easy as that.' The cases here show that companies often need to bring in outside help to set the right strategies, really understand the customer, evaluate social media data, etc. Finally, Part III (How Customer Experience Transforms Companies) shifts back to a more general, macro perspective to see where we are heading with some interesting predictions of why some industries (like health care now motivated to please customers with Obamacare) will move quickly to improve their customer experiences while others (like big banks) will try to hide behind regulatory requirements to protect their fees and business models.It was interesting for me personally to read the authors' assessment of Progressive at the end of the book. They termed them a potential winner but with still some important steps to complete. Even with many of those insights 15 years ago, they still have a lot to do. This book makes the important point that designing and really adopting a customer experience mentality is hard work and takes a long time to accomplish.

Thank God for the translation and literary explanations Mitchell puts on this book.The first half of the book is Mitchell's take on the book, where he surmises what is going on and then expounds on the depths of the meaning behind it. It's an easy and straight forward explanation that took me maybe half of a solid day of reading.Then there's the second half, which is the actual 'Epic of Gilgamesh' as it was translated. Also very straight forward, but without Mitchell's 'behind the scenes' explanation, it just reads like a one dimensional story.SO, thank God Mitchell wrote the explanations how he did (easy to read, took all of a day to read the entire book, as about 1/3 of it is simple references) - because without Mitchell's explanations, to me (and I imagine a lot of other people) the depth of Gilgamesh would have been immediately lost.

I just finished reading this version of Gilgamesh, and I'm still feeling the glow. I'm not new to Gilgamesh - I had read several versions already, but I am new to Stephen Mitchell. This version is by far the best I have read! Beginning with a 65 page introduction which I found delightful to read (Do yourself a favor and don't skip it - It, too is interesting and lively and you'll enjoy the author's insights) - Michell's adept writing brought life and a sense of personal connection to this work that I had missed in past readings. Mitchell's words flowed with rhythm and feeling throughout this great literature, made greater than I had remembered in the hands of other writers.I purchased this work for my Kindle, but in view of one of the reviewer's complaint that the eBook was displayed in prose rather than as it appears in print, I also opted to buy the printed book as well. Upon opening the hard copy, I was disappointed to find that the print throughout was in a fairly small and light font ... definitely not what I would have wished. So I turned to my Kindle edition: I experienced no problem at all in the "prose vs poetry" lines - The rhythm was obvious (and enjoyed by me) in spite of lack of line breaks. I'm so glad I did buy the eBook - Very enjoyable reading and with no eye strain.Only one problem: I was surprised to find that I had reached the end so soon ... I had become so engrossed in the story that the time flew, and, though I wasn't reading for speed, it was one of the fastest reads I've had the pleasure to complete.

I got this accidentally. My daughter needed an edition of Gilgamesh for school, and I got this instead of the edition she needed. I am SO glad I did.I have been wanting to read Gilgamesh for years. I got a copy in college, I couldn't make it through. I picked up another copy on some other occasion, I couldn't make it through. Barely got through the first few pages.THIS one... I love it. Easy to read. Easy to follow the story. Plenty of notes in the back where he explains when and where and why he made the translation choices he did. Simply fantastic.Can't say enough good things about this edition.. Well worth reading. It is actually a fun and exciting story once you get past all the scholarly stuff, which is to be expected. Gilgamesh wasn't written as literature, it was an adventure story, and Stephen Mitchell brings it back to it's very, very, very old roots.

I had not read the entire Gilgamesh story before, but I read some passages in high school English class. This is a great edition that ties together the fragments of the Gilgamesh story that have survived for thousands of years in a way that seems true to the way it was written in the original language and text. I enjoyed listening to the tales, and especially the commentary about the writing of this version and the research involved in piecing together the fragments. Enjoyable, especially for a long road trip.

This version of the great Babylonian epic Gilgamesh is immensely readable and lively, Mr. Mitchell's version does not try to overawe the reader but strives to make the material approachable, and at this he certainly succeeds. My own regret is that the editor/translator - Stephen Mitchell's introduction was so thorough and lengthy that it all but made the actual tale redundant. While informative, the introduction was too much of a blow by blow account to be labeled a proper introduction, it was rather a " synopsis en toto" {that's a term I just made up but I think you get the picture.

This is a review of the Kindle version of Mitchell's "version" of Gilgamesh, not the "version" itself. I use the term "version" because, as Mitchell himself admits on p. 65, this isn't a translation. What Mitchell's done here is to cobble various English translations together into his own "version" of the epic. And his "version" is exquisite and eminently readable. I've taught it for several years, and I'm always amazed at how students respond so positively to this ancient tale. Unfortunately, the Kindle version ignores the care with which Mitchell organizes/arranges his "version" into verse (which he explains on pp. 65-66) by not retaining the poetic formatting. Instead, Mitchell's "version" is turned into a prose narrative, thus abdicating one of the things that makes his "version" so accessible. I returned my Kindle copy because of this, and I'd encourage others to do the same.

This Stephen Mitchell book is an excellent presentation of The Epic of Gilgamesh. The interpretation of the text makes the story much more understandable. The broad underpinnings of the myth story -- the great flood, the mourning of the loss of a loved one, the search for eternal life -- are made understandable. This is highly readable and enjoyable presentation of a classic myth.

I personally felt that this was one of the most spot on, and incredibly relevant parenting books I have ever read. It addresses head on what we are dealing with and gives a fresh and compassionate perspective on what motivates our son's behavior. Highly, highly recommend.

First of all, I haven't finished this book yet. However, as I was reading the introduction, I got already convinced that this book is going to be a great tool for me. And then as I got more immersed in the author's concise, practical and empathetic writing, I couldn't help but grab my phone and open Amazon's app to provide my very premature but very honest review.I don't have one, but two teenage boys, and they are only one year apart but, I ordered this book with my oldest son in mind.Honestly, I never thought that having the amazing opportunity of witnessing the transition of my son becoming an adult was going to drive me crazy, to make me doubt myself in one year more than I have during my whole life, to make me want to give up, run away and hide for the next 10 years. Because, parenting teenagers, is really challenging and frustrating sometimes :( . And I know everybody can say that but no one will truly realize it until one day their sweet babies are transforming into saucy teenagers!!I have read several books about teenagers and parenting but this book has greatly surprised me so far. It is so simple but oh so real and raw and sincere and compassionate that I already know I will read it more than once. This book is a huge ray of hope for me, there's a saying that goes: "it takes a village to raise a child" but, to raise a teenager it surely takes more than just a village, well, this book for me has become all that. I am not sure how I found it but I am really grateful I decided to buy it when I needed it the most.I wish teachers and counselors would also read it, in fact I think I'll buy some for my sons' teachers 😇

As a parent and college educator, I not only recommend this book for every parent of an adolescent boy (and girls too), but to every middle school and high school teacher. I learned so much and found so much wisdom that will give insight into the behavior of our ambivalent learners, and provide tools for helping them to succeed. I will recommend it not only to my parent and teacher friends, but to my students who will be parents and teachers in the near future.

This is one of the best parenting books I've ever read. It's relatable, easy to read and provides suggestions that are realistic and doable to change the course of parenting a teen or preteen boy who's not into school. It provides insight on the psychology behind both teen and parent behavior, not only related to school, but also the changing dynamics as boys mature. It's exactly what my husband and I needed as our boys enter the teen years. It's almost like the author wrote it specifically for us - his insight to what's going with my son and our parenting on was spot on. I recommend this book both for its insight on lackluster effort at school as well as how to understand a teen boy in general, and what parents need to do.

Still way too many typos for a published bookThe story is finally becoming clearerI skim through the saccharine love scenes between Alexis and Cassidy .. the constant chatter while they are making love, is creepy and completely off puttingThat said, I'm starting to enjoy this series, finallyI persevered as I have liked the sub plot from the get go... all the secrets, they're actually quite believable, given today's current political climate, even probableThe author appears to have listened to the criticisms of the first 2 books in this series, as this one, had ironed out some of the more jarring aspects of the first two booksThere are less declarations of undying loveLess ridiculous and impossible promise made to each other and less grammatical errors, and the story is less confusing nowActually looking forward to the 4th book in this series

Best one yet! I fell in love with this series from the very beginning and it just keeps getting better and better. I'v read the first two books in the series twice now and enjoy them even more each time. It has also helped me to know the characters better because I feel I missed a lot the first time around.I don't know how Nancy Healy comes up with the twists and turns in her books, but they sure do keep me spellbound. Without adding any spoilers, just let me say the ending of this blew me away. One portion of the ending I may have seen coming, the other.......whew!

Another excellent installment in Alex & Cassidy's story. Ms Healy is definitely one of my favorite storytellers. There is so much in this book. Perfect twist at the end. I'm going to dive right in to the next one. I highly reccommend. What clairvoyance too! It's almost as if things from the story are playing out in real time! Now that's some storytelling.

I have read many books and this series by far is my favorite. This book kept my interest the whole way through to the end. Once I picked it up I could not put it down until I finished it. Nancy Healy is an amazingly talented writer! I have read the first two books in the series multiple times and I know I will read this book over and over again. The political intrigue in the book was so well written that it made it very easy to get caught up in the book. The love portrayed between Alex and Cassidy is so pure and honest that it touched my heart. I highly recommend this series

The third installment is by far the best. Commitment is an incredible read. You can clearly see the growth in Ms. Healy's writing from Intersection to Betrayal to Commitment. The combination of the political battle/conspiracy intermingled with the family/love that has been created by the author is seamless. There is no doubt that Ms. Healy knows what she is doing. You will not be disappointed. If you want to get lost in a well told tale don't hesitate to read Ms. Healy's books. Just make sure you read from the beginning.

I have read the first 3 books in this series. The writing is very similar to JA Armstrong possibly an alias? The story line is interesting but I had to go back to books 1&2 to place who's who. I'm not usually a mystery reader especially when the mystery runs through multiple books which could be the cause of my confusion. There's a very good chance that books 4&5 will be purchased soon.

As with the rest of the books in this series this book had me up all night. It is a page turner that you just can not put down because you WANT to see what happens next!! Alex & Cassidy are characters you WANT to know. You WANT to be involved with. And just when you THINK you have it figured out.... BAM!! Nancy gets you in the end and leaves you hanging in anticipation for then next round!! I am so waiting for her next book in the series to see where she takes this..... If you have not read INTERSECTION OR BETRAYAL.... make sure you read them first and in that order. Or you will be totally LOST!!
