Amy Irvine’s memoir Trespass: Living at the Edge of the Promised Land is by turns a frustrating and enlivening book, with lots of moments far away from these two extremes. Although Irivine is not likable in most conventional ways, she is an honest and precise writer, and in the end that is what makes this book worth reading.What is Irvine’s problem? I think this quote from the book sums it up: “the rage of Otherness that has threatened to doom my personal life has also rendered me ineffective as an advocate for wilderness protection, as an advocate for anything at all.”For Irvine, the world is not a safe place. She rages against “the other” just as she often renders herself the other. Growing up a quasi-Mormon, and then living in a very remote area of south-eastern Utah, had done nothing for her sense of belonging. Ranchers versus environmentalists, Mormon's versus "Gentiles"... in this part of the world relationships are strained and people are enemies as polarized communities life together and fight over foundation issues.Sure, the author ends on a high note, but I have a feeling her story is far from over.

One of the better books I've read in awhile - I want to say it's a great introduction to SE Utah, both sad and fascinating. I love stories of outsiders moving into new communities and this one just reinforces why Utah is a real challenging place socially and environmentally - umm, especially if you care about the fate of natural and historic resources. Seems to me I've read that this author has faced some pretty serious health challenges, so her achievement at publishing a book length work is laudable. Hope we continue to hear more from her.

Great read. I really enjoy the description of her experiences. One of the few books that can 'take me there.' I don't actually agree with some of her positions, but what wonderful insight into who she is, her father, her family, her upbringing, her stance. Enriching and enlightening to read. Very highly recommend.

Amy Irvine is a gifted writer whose prose kept me reading in spite of feeling offended several times in nearly every chapter about a variety of subjects including the LDS Church, the little town of Monticello I grew up in, cattle ranching and the seemingly inflexible wilderness attitudes. My younger brother enjoys riding what he calls a four wheeler and she calls an ORV to see the incredible sights of the Colorado Plateau she so beautiful describes in her book. It is clear that she and I share a love of the redrock country. As a retired psychiatrist I enjoyed her fearless and at times appropriately veiled exposé of her personal and family dynamics. I thoroughly enjoyed the interweaving of her knowledge of ancient San Juan County cultures into the fabric of her personal story. The ending chapters were unsettling to me and I am not sure I can explain why. Is it because it seems she has given up her passionate quest? Is it because her trespass metaphor became blurred? Is it because she became ill? I don't know. I will let it continue to percolate in my mind and I may read it again. I recommend it. I agree with Terry Tempest Williams, "This is a transformative memoir that dances between shadow and light.

Boring. Wonderful beginning, but became tiresome without any kind of resolution of the conflict. Just continual descriptions of the beauty of the desert, and full of the misery of the author.

A beautiful, thoughtful, important book. I originally borrowed it for a weekend but had to buy myself a copy as it addresses such rich themes - loss, wilderness, vision, community, ideology-- and ultimately, responsibility.

But like any surface- often merely crust deep and penetrable- Amy Irvine takes us to the deeper layers- closer to the core of things- including herself.As much as revealing her own inner world in amazing rawness, and humanity, it also shows us that like the landscape it occupies- the story is a reflection of conflict, and the resilience require to survive in such a terrain- inhospitable at first- far more nourishing and rewarding for those humans, animals, the land itself -wise enough to wait and listen. On another layer it illuminates for us the tragic consequences of spiritual righteousness turned self- righteousness- how once again- faith turned belief turned zeal can easily become intolerance by anyone.Ultimately- Amy Irvine's book is a call for conversation- for listening, for dialogue- rather then arguments of right and wrong. As such it offers hope, and insight- of the path ahead - unfolding.

I just got this book today and looked through it and am eager to start making bracelets. The pictures are well done and clear, the projects contain materials list and easy to follow diagrams, and the color combinations and styles are inspiring. It doesn't just cover bracelets but also suggest adaptations for some of the designs into necklaces and earrings. There's even a project for a bracelet with a brooch where the brooch can be worn standalone. I love that the projects use a nice mix of different materials and beads. It is a good jump start for beginners and still suitable for intermediate makers.

This is a great book if you are looking for a comprehensive book on making simple wrap bracelets. While the bracelets are simple, the bracelet designs are very nice, contemporary and look like many of the bracelets that you see in many expensive magazines and boutiques. The directions are very clear, and comprehensive. For example, for the bracelet that looks very much like the expensive Lau bracelet, I took a class that left me with shoddy bracelets that didn't hold up to the normal wear and tear. The directions here have you going back through the bead to make a more secure attachment. While it might be hard to picture this in my review, the book has clear drawings that are easy to follow.Watch the price before you buy—this book seems to go up and down in price. I was able to purchase it for ~$9.00. Well worth it!

I have looked at a lot of wrap bracelet books and rejected all of them until I got this one. It has a nice start if you've never made the basic wrap, as well as the friendship bracelets beloved by teens. But what distinguishes this book is the bracelets, and necklaces, that build on these basics. Many lovely, original ideas, clearly explained without excessive chattiness or over the top styling. Beautiful, but useful, photographs. Good for beginners on up.

If you are new to jewelry making this book is a great buy. It's much cheaper getting it online then going and buying it in a bookstore or a crafting store. This book has helped me out a great deal with its clear step by step how too. If you are anything like me and like to copy from pictures rather than read this book is also good for that as well.

Wonderful book with lots of different bracelet designs, pictures and detailed instructions! I highly recommend this book for bracelet loom making projects.

Thucydides (c. 460 BC–400 BC) was a general who was exiled for his failure to defend the Greek city of Amphipolis in Thrace. During his exile, he began compiling histories and accounts of the war from various participants.Rex Warner was a Professor of the University of Connecticut from 1964 until his retirement in He was born in 1905 and went to Wadham College, Oxford, where he gained a "first" in Classical Moderations, and took a degree in English Literature. He taught in Egypt and England, and was Director of the British Institute, Athens, from 1945 to 1947. He has written poems, novels and critical essays, has worked on films and broadcasting, and has translated many works, of which Xenophon’s History of My Time and The Persian Expedition, Thucydides’ The Peloponnesian War, and Plutarch’s Lives (under the title Fall of the Roman Republic) and Moral Essays have been published in Penguin Classics.M. I. Finley was a professor of ancient history and master of Darwin College, Cambridge. He died in 1986.

This is a difficult book to read and a difficult review to write. Both lie in the book's richness and the fact that many books, not only reviews, have been written about Thucidides' masterpiece. For example, there is an excellent (and most warmly recommended) article in Wikipedia. Can I add anything? Well, it is still worth a valiant try. A word of warning- before you embark on this reading adventure, get yourself a good detailed map of the contemporary Mediterrenean. It would be a great help to understand the various moves and identify the many actors of this 21-year power-play.Thucidides has been labeled as the first scientific historian. His account is incredibly objective, even-handed , and non-partisan. He participated personally in the Peloponesian wars as a minor strategos (military leader or general) and was banished for not achieving what he was supposed to do. From that point on, he retired to his extensive family holdings in Tracia and gave all his time (presumably) to research the war and interview the witnesses. His account ends abruptly, probably due to his sudden death, and covers the first 21 years of the 27-year war. The best parts are the speeches of the leaders, generals and representatives of various countries or factions. Obviously, Thucidides had not been present on these occasions and considering the poor records available 2400 years ago, had no access to recordings or stenograms. Most are therefore hearsay, at best, or the authors conviction that what he related should have been said. Nevertheless, the speeches are a marvelous exmple of how human nature did not change one bit in more than two thousand years. The people we observe through Thusidides' words are intelligent, educated, ambitious, demagogues and true lovers of their countries, heroes and rogues, many times could be perceived by us as both good and bad, depending on circumstances. The squabling, cultured, even effeminate democratic Athenians prove to be exceedingly good at war and barely fail to subjugate the whole Peloponesian league led by the harsh warlike Spartans. For Thucidides, however, there are no moral judgements, only cold examination of circumstances. Even Alcybiades, a rare example of turncoat, double-dealer, demagogue and villain is not censured. Rather Thucidides raises his eyebrows questioningly at the naivete of the people who continued to believe and follow, nay even invite this man despite all the evidence available.Only in one case, that of Cleon, Thucidides looses his admirable cool. Cleon, the cowardly demagogue and cheat who instigates a doomed military campaign and is forced to lead it by the more responsible Athenian general. Thucidides describes that campaign how Cleon hesitates, stumbles, always puts his worst foot forward, and then wins by an unbelivable fluke. His description of thea rguments presented by the Athenian envoys to the representatives of Melos precede Macchiavelli's "The Prince" by two thousand years. The Melians choose honor and love of their freedom. Their cause being right, they are consequently slaughtered and the women and children sold into slavery.Do not omit his moving description of the Athenian plague. It is a rare gem!And by all means, do read it!

The price is unbeatable but the translation is pretty rough. Many sentences had to be reread to just sort out the awkward phraseology. Thucydides is hard to translate because even in his time his writing was criticized for neologisms, very quirky metaphors and abstractions and odd turns of phrase. But this makes it all the more important to have a good translation. This one does used modern terminology that is sometimes jarring in the context of the era of the history, So Thucydides was not an easy read for his contemporaries and thus a "good translation" that reads easily also fails to convey the characteristic of the actual work itself. The translation by Warner perhaps comes as close to palatable and yet conveys the unique style that is Thucydides. As a work, it could be a 21st Century treatise. The parallels to current events are almost eerie from the "neocon" Alcibiades urging Athens to the Iraquian Syracuse war disaster to the oligarchy displacing the Athenian democracy.... the parallels are remarkable.

I absolutely loved the style in which the story is told, rather than making everything as brief as possible, Thucydides takes his time, he is as long-winded as they come and that's a good thing. Sometimes a multitude of words are needed to fully explain a situation, sometimes it's even best to look at things from more than 1 perspective, a crazy thought I know. Around the page 400-500 mark it really hit me, this is exactly what we need in the world today. I can only hope that other Greek classics are done in the same style, at the very least this book has me seeking them out. I can even say who fought in, who won, and what the basic sides were in the Peloponnesian War, not something I could have said before I picked up this book

This 2,500 year-old translated book (The History of the Peloponnesian War) is a wealth of details for the researcher or historical scholar but difficult to read and comprehend in its present form for the lay person. This reader began it after it was referenced in a more modern book entitled: “Destined for War: Can America and China Escape Thucydides’s Trap?” by Graham Allison; the book by Allison, I highly recommend; but not so much this ancient one unless one is a historian or researcher trying to get close to original source material. The text reminds on of a pre Gregorian calendar with reference to: “the fourteenth of the month of Elaphebolion; … and their allies on the twelfth day of the Spartan month Gerastius” The language structure was a bit cumbersome but the author (long since dead) assumes that the reader has a detailed grasp of the geography of ancient Greece. As an example part of the text reads: "The Lacedaemonians and Argives, each a thousand strong, now took the field together, and the former first went by themselves to Sicyon and made the government there more oligarchical than before, and then both, uniting, put down the democracy at Argos and set up an oligarchy favourable to Lacedaemon. These events occurred at the close of the winter, just before spring; and the fourteenth year of the war ended. The next summer the people of Dium, in Athos, revolted from the Athenians to the Chalcidians, and the Lacedaemonians settled affairs in Achaea in a way more agreeable to the interests of their country." Moreover, the author assumes that the reader is knowledgeable of all of the different city states and which alliances have been formed between various ones and how they change with time. The interested scholar could write an annotated book with maps and tables listing which city states were fighting against which other city states and how in tabular form this changes with time. As the war went on well more that (the first) ten year period before a break and then continued on, such a task with one or more maps is not trivial but would improve understanding of this historical (translated) original work. This reviewer was glad to have the manuscript available on a Kindle app; many words were sufficiently obscure as to be unknown to the reader, even so, some words were unknown to the Kindle dictionary or used in an archaic way such as “engine” or “trophy” or “embassy.” In any event it was a struggle to get through this book that capture the details of many years of battles involving many city states some with changing allegiances. Two alternative version might have wider appeal if written: an abridged version or an annotated version.

Good dark europe resource book even if you don't play Vampire, which I don't.

I don't think there is anyway to truly express how much I love this book!!! I've listened to it at least 5 times now and will continue to as it's so full of direct helpful information to getting yourself to think the right way. Everything starts from within and I'm really on a journey to think the right way and hopefully have a much better life and better for my kids kids as they pass it down.Please pick this up somewhere and listen or read it. Can't recommend it enough!! AWESOME BOOK!!!

This book is worth reading for the one very valuable central idea it presents - that we have a pre-conditioned "set point" for wealth, and we must break our conditioning if we are to succeed past it. Other parts of the book struck me as poor reasoning, or even dangerous advice - like, that you should "practice" being wealthy (before you are) by splurging on expensive stuff and getting used to a "rich" mind set. I don't think this is as generally useful or practical as the author purports it to be, it's based on some pretty narrow reasoning of What Worked for Him.

This book is average at best. A big commercial for his seminars, which are mentioned at least 100 times. You never learn how to diagnose your own "money blueprint" because of course you have to pay to go to a seminar for that. This was a big let down. Also there were no chapters so without natural breaks it was really hard to read. There are a few decent lessons and highlights to take away, but much less useful than most other highly rated money books.

Life changing at a time I needed to be reminded of it. It's a great motivational book, even though I don't agree with some of his ideas. For example, the drive to get wealth shouldn't be put first over family. I've seen too many people put all their energy into getting wealthy but neglected their spouse and children while doing so. Yes, they won the battle by getting the money but they lost the war by losing their families through divorce or enmity toward each other. Most of his ideas are great motivators, though.

Excellent book for putting yourself inside of the heads of successful people. It allows you to see things differently, would recommend to everyone who hasn't had a parent/mentor-figure to talk about building wealth, pursuing opportunities, and personal development.

This was a great read. I loved the points the book made and how the author gets you to participate in the activities. I felt like I was at a motivational conference, but in my own living room.I've implemented the money management techniques mentioned in the book, and it's been great. The financial balance this book brings was much needed in my life.This is not a get rich quick book or business book really. It's really a money book that focuses on financial balance, rather than just investing or money management. The concept of a splurge fund was new to me, but it's been great to implement.The fun I have spending money from my splurge account motivates me to make more money so that I can have more fun :) And I don't feel guilty about spending the money, because I have other money budgeted for investing, savings, and giving.This book really will change your life if you do the steps. So far I zip lined on the highest zip line in the world, and went skydiving with my wife. Next we're going on an overnight trip somewhere so that our 4 year old boys can fly on an airplane for the first time.Get the book and do the steps. You won't be disappointed.

Mostly interesting as a reminder of things we do wrong in our day to day lives. But it's not cool when it comes to self promotion and as marketing vehicle for other products of author.

This book really changed my life and my business. I came from a poor family and everyone I've ever known has been poor. This book re-wired my brain for success and money and helped me see things from a viewpoint I never would have had access to! I see now how I had been living in the darkness and there is a whole different world out there full of abundance! I no longer resent rich people; I learned to love myself as well and how to change my money blueprint. Thank you T. Harv Eker!

I hate it when I buy a book and it turns out to be an out and out sales pitch. Nothing to learn here. Don't buy.
