For anyone that loves the Detroit Red Wings, or ice hockey in general, this is a great book. Good information and wonderful pictures. It was better than I imagined when I saw it online. I used it as a birthday gift, and the recipient is a huge Yzerman fan... he absolutely loved the book. Said it was one of his best presents ever.

Got this as a gift for a friend. He loves it. Steve Yzerman was the epitomy of leadership. So many great teams under his tenure. Couldn't feel more blessed as a Wings fan.

A wonderful keepsake for anyone who was--and still is--a Steve Yzerman fan. A man with incredible accomplishments and integrity, he was a dedicated captain and dedicated to his teammates and his fans. His fans, in turn, were just as dedicated to him. And I think I probably speak for every one of them when I say it was a really sad day when he retired. It was almost like the lights went out in Michigan. We would have been happy to see him in a Red Wings jersey for many years to come. We would have been happy just to see him out there skating around. He is a shining example of what every hockey player should strive to be but he was pretty unique and he'll be hard to beat.

In this era of free agency and mega-million dollar salaries, Steve Yzerman was a rarity...a superstar athlete who played his entire career with just one team. You need only mention "The Captain" to any Detroiter and they will know who you are talking about.This marvelous book from the Detroit Free Press and Triumph books traces the career of one of the greatest professional athletes in Detroit sports history. The word legend is thrown about quite freely these days but it certainly applies to Yzerman. Here was perhaps the most modest superstar you could ever hope to meet. A fierce competitor on the ice, who over came numerous injuries, and a pure gentleman off the ice, Yzerman retired after the 2005 - 2006 season to take a much deserved spot in the Red Wings front office. More than any other player, coach, or owner, Yzerman was responsible for resurrecting a once great hockey team that had fallen on lean times in the 1970's and early 1980's.We get to see a young Yzerman, just 18 years old as he shakes hands with team owner Mike Illitch after being selected in the first round...only after the Wings first choice, Pat LaFontaine, was drafted one spot earlier. We can all thank the NY Islanders for that! Yzerman was named team captain in 1986, at just 21 years of age, making him the youngest captain in team history.The book tracks Yzerman's career, season-by-season, reprinting articles by Free Press writers such as Mitch Albom, Keith Gave, and Nick Cotsonika. Re-live those early playoff disappointments including the Stanley Cup finals loss to New Jersey in 1995. Then relive the glory of 1997 as the Red Wings took revenge on the hated Colorado Avs, first in the regular season, and then in the playoffs, on their way to their first Stanley cup since 1955. This book reminds me a lot of my all-time favorite Yzerman book, "The Making of a Champion," which came out about 10 years ago. It's pretty much the same format - reprints of news articles and photos that appeared in the paper, along with some original features.Whereas "Champion" covered the first 10 or so years of Stevie's career, "The Captain" covers all of it. The articles, written by Detroit Free Press writers Bill McGraw, Mitch Albom, Nicholas Cotsonika and others, follow Steve from his early days as a teenage Red Wing, referring to Steve as "baby-cheeked" and telling us "if he shaves, it's only for practice" (and that he used to order white milk in bars!); as he becomes The Captain; blossoms into one of the NHL's most prolific goal scorers under Jacques Demers and then a three-time Stanley Cup champion under Scotty Bowman. All while playing for only one team - the Detroit Red Wings."The Captain" is a great tribute to a man who personifies the words "class" and "perseverance" and the ice is a colder place without him. This book is a must-have for Yzerman fans everywhere, regardless of which team you cheer for.

It was a gift so I think he liked it. I don't know much about Hockey.

This is an excellent book that teaches you how to think of all price movements in terms of supply and demand. Flat regions (which I've heard called consolidation areas or trading regions) are really just "value areas," places where the buyer and seller agree the price is fair. Most books stop there. This book zooms in that value area and teaches you how to analyze who is dominating the trades, buyers or sellers, and how to predict how trends will change. Value areas are not always flat; they can be slanted upward or downward, and this changes your analysis. He discusses this in great detail. The book also gives a fascinating discussion about how to use time scales to make trades (need to look at bigger time scales to understand the bigger context of the scale you trade on. Then, based on that context, you can make smarter trades when you zoom in to a smaller time scale).Only beef: sometimes the grammar is a bit imperfect and makes it hard to understand. This is rarely a problem but when it occurs, you need to reread the sentence a couple of times to get it. No big deal, and since English is not the author's first language, I didn't remove a star because of this.Informative book and fast read. highly recommended.

The methods and ideas in this book are not new and can be found in many other books. Unfortunately these strategies are not applicable to the intraday trading since the market (like ES) changes orientations frequently during the day and it does not give you clear value zone and maintain for a significant time. It might be good for long term traders using daily charts but it does not clearly explain how to get in and out of the market when trading.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand how to trade forex using price action only without the need for any indicators. I love the way the book was written. It explains in great detail the forces behind price movement and how you can tell what the "big boys" are up to simply by looking at the charts and then profit by trading with them. At first I thought this book would be like other price action courses I've read in the past and I was pleasantly surprised. It has nothing to do with price patterns and candlesticks. It goes deeper than that. It actually explains how applying the concepts in this book will free you from having to memorize price patterns. You'll see that price patterns and candlestick interpretations are simply principles that arise from knowing the dynamics of the fundamental forces that shape the currency market. This book is truly eye-opening!

If you are a Price Action Trader and you've had the patience to read Al Brooks' books, then you need to get this book too! Damir presents the concept of "value areas" in a beautiful way, that elegantly complements similar concepts that Al Brooks teaches. Taking the two approaches together will give you a whole new appreciation for what each of them are trying to communicate, individually. The most important thing though, is you will come away from this book with an expanded knowledge and appreciation for the fact that there really is a dynamic structure to the Price/Time relationship, that can be traded profitably.And do yourself a favor: English is not his first language. Consequently, the grammar will sound a little less-than-correct to native English speakers (no offense to Laurentiu obviously - I can't even imagine having to learn his language, to communicate concepts like this - pretty sure it would never happen in fact). I actually found the lack of grammatical perfection kind of endearing once I got used to it. If you get hung up on it you're only hurting yourself because what he has to teach in this book is really, really valuable. Get this book!!

After finishing the book and grasping what is been taught and seeing the actual material present in my charts, I felt the urge to read the book again with a more focused mind.After each lesson I applied what i've learned without entering a trade as i was still a bit sceptical about the strategy. The further i went on and the more notes I made and practiced with chart time, the more everything became clear and the language barrier was broken.I literally had my charts open while i was reading the last chapter about combining everything that was taught. Today while finishing the book for the second time I opened my first trade using the price action strategy. I'm not in profit and with only one trade open on GOLD i've gained more than 80% capital growth in a matter of 2 hours.This is powerful because you only focus on basic movements. No lagging indicators.. Just the charts (which is all you need).After a few months of trading I finally found the strategy (way) and confidence to pull the trigger on a trade, because now I know what the charts are telling me through the supply and demand factors.Will never regret buying this book..Thank You Laurentiu for your input.P.S - English is also not my native language, and i could grasp whatever you had to say or explain.

UPDATED REVIEW - January 2019:I've finally finished reading this beast. The story is great fun. It's not like the movie "Into the Spider-Verse". There's a LOT more Spider-characters, a wilder crew of baddies with The Inheritors, and, of course, the Superior Spider-Man bossing everyone around. Overall, it's just a great read and I'd highly recommend it. I'm retaining all my previous notes, though, about the ordering of the issues; that's Marvel's fault. It's complicated and time-consuming to go through this entire collection just to find the next chronological issue, but I'd still recommend the story. So get some post-it notes, start tabbing the correct order of the issues, and enjoy (see below for the correct publication--AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, SPOILER-AVOIDANCE!--reading order).ORIGINAL REVIEW:See my attached picture. I haven't actually read this yet because I spent several hours (split over two evenings) organizing these collections ("Spider-Verse" and "Edge of Spider-Verse") into their correct publication order. Bit of a chore, really. Seriously, Marvel, you couldn't have made this huge multiverse-jumping crossover event more easy for your consumers to read through?Anyway, issues are sorted by series and not by chronology, i.e., "Superior Spider-Man" issues, THEN "Amazing Spider-Man" issues, and so on and so forth. Other reviewers really weren't exaggerating: a chronology is given at the beginning of the collection, but without page numbers we're still left in the lurch, going page by page to find where each issue begins and where, precisely, they end. Also, I personally wish they'd included writer/illustrator intro credits on the front of each issue, rather than bunch them all together at the front of the book. I realize they might've done this so that we may just enjoy the lovely artwork, but I like seeing who specifically worked on what issue at the beginning of the actual issue. I'm not a much of a fan of big Marvel cross-overs in general, but I was interested in this due to liking some of the books that follow it. I'm about half way through and it's a bit spotty and hard to follow plot-wise, but I won't go into that much. The biggest problem is the issues aren't in chronological order. Instead, they're grouped together by series. So you can either read them out of order or keep flipping to the chronological listing in the front to see which issue to read next. It's just poorly done and there is no real good reason why they just didn't place them in order in the first place. The Spider-Verse event is kind of a mess anyway and having a sloppy collection doesn't help. Even if you like the plot, it'd be hard to say that this collection was well thought out.

I read a lot of reviews talking about the format, I thought how bad could it be? It's seriously ridiculous. It took me about 1.5 hours using post-it notes to get this in the correct reading order. The chronology is listed at the beginning of the book but with no page numbers you have to hunt for everything. I have no clue what order this is actually in but it's defiantly not in alphabetical or chronological. As stated in other reviews it also doesn't include 5 issues, those are in a separate book, Edge of the Spider-Verse.I will say it's a fun story, not super deep plot wise, which I probably would have enjoyed more. Unsure if it was worth the read for the extra time I had to into but I loved the jokes and Spidey one liners. Made me interested in a couple of the comics which was probably the point. But seriously would it have been so hard to put this in order?

Great saga, if not a original one. If you ever saw the last season of Buffy the vampire slayer, you will notice some similarities between the story lines. But the Spider verse in my opinion is the better storyline. The Spider-Hero's of different universes need to work together against an all powerful Killer family. The story is to complicated give a detailed summery. But not only do you get the original Spider-man, you get bad Spider-man, gunslinging Spider-man, animal Spider-man, Spider-women, Spider Clones, Spider-man from cartoons, and lot Spider characters in all races and sizes. Some of them you will remember from comic spinoffs. As I said a complicated saga. As I said in my previous review of the Edge of the Spider-verse. They do give you a checklist of what order you should read the comics in the two books in. Don't read them from beginning to end, it will get confusing if you do that. Best way to read these books is in kindle, so you jump back and forth in books in the order the checklist gives you. My only complaint is why the didn't add the the Edge of the Spider-verse comics in this book. It's already 600 pages long, what's five more comics to it.

Up there with the best of Slott's Spider-Man run. He makes it look easy presenting a compelling high-concept (all the Spider-Men you've ever seen teaming-up!) that builds off several years of his own run, meaningfully ties-in all the other Spider-Family ongoing titles, and homages to some of the great Spider chapters of yester-year (in this case, "The Other" from JMS's run in the 2000's). Coipel carries the art as always but Camuncolli keeps up with him better than I expected. Lots of fun bonus material, too. I didn't mind the non-chronological order because the truth is, if you read it straight through from the front, you get a well-paced narrative followed by what can be summarized as bonus material. If it were chronological it would be a jumbled mess with a repetitive and meandering prologue followed by an unevenly paced and perpetually interrupted main story. I highly recommend the five-issue Edge of Spider-Verse featuring Spider-Gwen and others to complete this collection.

I just got the book and haven't made anything out of it yet but I looked through it pretty extensively and read a fair bit.Instructions seem clear and easy to follow, there are lots of full color pictures and a TON of projects I want to make! I'm really glad I bought this book, although I must admit I'm a beginner to the medium so I can't say if the book would be good for a more advanced sculpy artist. But if I had to guess? I bet there's some nuggets of gold in here for even the more knowledgeable. I don't think the projects seem totally amateur.

I have to admit, I was scared to buy this book. Everything I'd ever seen in Polymer Clay jewelry was not anything i would ever wear or was interested in. This book gives you projects to work on that are gorgeous and very easy to understand. If you are looking for a new technique to add to your jewelry making and not sure where to go, this book is for you. It is simple to understand, the pictures are very helpful and beautiful. I am so happy I bought this book to add to my craft library.

Sophie shows techniques of how to make different beads. The book will walk you through how to process the clay, textures to use to make different designs. How to place the beads on tray to bake, the tempature and length of time. This is the only book you will need to begin you journey with making beads. She suggest the make of pasta machine to purchase to prepare the clay. Which is a great machine. Her designs are beautiful and her techinque is captured in the step-by-step illustrations. The photos are taken in step-by-step. Making this book worth much more than the purchase price. Follow her directions, add your personal touch to the beads and jewelry, sell your finished piece of jewelry. You will make your money back in this one piece. I am a beginner to polymer clay. Making Jewelry from Polymer Clay by Sophie Arzalier is a must have for any person who has the desire to become a jewelry designer. Thank you Ms. Arzalier for your time, knowledge, and beautiful illustrations that will lead many of us to dive into the polymer clay world of jewelry.

I'm very happy with the book. Beautiful projects, some new approaches to polymer clay that I hadn't seen or thought of before, and I've been using clay for a long time. Am looking forward to trying them out. I would recommend the paper copy over the Kindle version, though. The photos on my Kindle Fire don't seem as sharp or clear.

i first read this book when i found it at the library in ft. lauderdale, florida and i could not wait to get it for myself. finally found it atamazon and since then have been fascinated by it and by all the techniques described in the book. i highly recommend it for anyone interested in what i would call "a more ethinic and/or bohemian style"

I have many polymer clay titles in my library, going all the way back to Nan Roche's "The New Clay". This title is at the top of my list. Not only are the jewelry designs easy & hip, there are several millefiori cane tutorials and extrusion ideas. Throughout the book, there are several tips. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. I would recommend this book not only for the beautiful polymer ideas, but also for the jewelry artist looking for some new design ideas.

This is an ok book. It is fairly well written, has pretty pictures, and may be a good addition to your book collection. It is not inspiring, and for a obsessed polymer clay fan, it doesn't add much to your body of knowledge. Still, it is well worth the price, and it was fun to page through.

This book is informative in many ways. It is a delightful reference book. Statutes, laws, rules, regulations and the product itself have changed a great deal since the days I used to smoke marijuana recreationally. That was in middle and high school, long ago. I quit smoking it in 10th grade because it always made me way too paranoid all the time. I stayed clean of all drugs since then.Getting older and sicker has brought the medicinal plant, marijuana, back into my life for treatment of extreme muscle and joint pain, muscle stiffness, tendonitis and weakness brought on by Early-Onset Parkinson's Disease. I am only 51 years old, but my tremors had begun about 9 years ago around age 42 and have progressed. I was super skeptical that I would benefit from medical marijuana. I take PD meds too but they are strong, don't work as well as they used to after time, and have side effects. Since starting on medical marijuana, I have been able to reduce them from 5 times a day to 3-4 times, and experience very few side effects from them now. (I also must credit corrective chiropractic medicine for the amazing improvements I have experienced.)The Leafly Guide to Cannabis: A Handbook for the Modern Consumer (patient consumer, here in Florida, not recreational) is easy to read, has lots of pictures and seems accurate too. The book appears to have been written to cover a wide range of usage allowances determined by each State, so it is not specific to Florida Medical Marijuana. It does present many related topics though.The strain matters a great deal. From this book, you can learn about many of them, but not all of them. Different dispensaries carry different strains. Dispensaries are like franchises that carry a specific brand of strains that they grow. This book seems to cover the strains Leafly sells. Some are energizing; some help you focus, some bring on creativity, some ease pain, or bring on sleep for insomniacs or people with somnolence, like me. Learning about exactly which strain does what for your symptoms is important. I have not found the right one for my tremor yet, still experimenting, but for pain and other aspects of PD, it is miraculous. I was able to stop unwanted opioids immediately, after really needing them for about 4 months!!When buying weed off the street, you have no guaranty that the strain they say you are buying is actually what they call it. And there is no quality control. This has always been true. Today's medicinal approach is clearly superior. No paranoia to be found yet!For a living, I consult Compassionate Care patients because I can tell you; there is a huge learning curve. I work with clients pre and post-prescription, to advise and educate them on the ever-changing process for procurement. I study the original law and ever-changing rules and regulations regarding all facets of use, distribution and dosage, type of product (vape pen v. capsules v. topical creams) to guide my clients and keep them abreast of changes they may need to know about.Insurance does not cover medical marijuana, so it is expensive to see the doctor and buy the product. Prescriptions are written very differently from those for the other meds, and I help people weed through (no pun intended) the myriad of websites, processes, and choices, to see if it is right for them before they shell out the big bucks just to be evaluated by the prescribing physician. Most prescribing physicians are ignorant (not knowledgeable) of the effects of low or high THC medical cannabis and are hesitant to prescribe it because it does cause a "high", opting for CBD oils, which do not cause a "high." I am becoming somewhat of an expert on these matters so that I may assist my clients who need to consult a professional so they may be more knowledgeable when they speak with their physicians. Physicians are often too busy to give you an education, which is where I come in. I also help those that are computer illiterate and could use a hand with that, especially older folks. I am finding the book to be quite a good resource, and I recommend it highly to all my clients to ease them into a possible acceptance of using the once taboo marijuana as a medicine. It covers many topics with how-to instructions, which is a great learning tool for the novice.There is a lot to learn if you are thinking about trying medical marijuana - way more than you thought - so starting with good resources is of utmost importance and will save you money and time in the end.

The headline to this review may be deemed irrelevant since the author states right off the bat that this is a book oriented to asset management professionals or soon-to-be ones. However, I thought it could be helpful to any individual investor who ended up here.By â€œnot criticalâ€ I donâ€™t mean useless. On the contrary, I think it is very educational. The problem is that I donâ€™t think applied financial macroeconomics consists of an investing approach in itself. It is definitely a very strong complement. But nothing more than that. Being time and resource constrained, individual investors need to be very efficient in the way they plow through information and make decisions. They donâ€™t care if the investment philosophy sounds appealing, they just need it to work and be easy to implement. And itâ€™s for that reason that this is not a critical book for them.The authorâ€™s thesis is based on the idea that the business cycle is a critical factor explaining major fluctuations in the different asset classes (equity, bonds, and commodities). This is true in the sense that, every time there has been a recession or depression, there has also been a major correction (or a straight up crash) in the stock market. The problem is that those are not the only times when the stock market has suffered major corrections. The popular saying â€œthe stock market has predicted 9 of the last 5 recessionsâ€ implies that there are almost twice as many stock market cycles than business cycles (please, don't take this literally). And remember, youâ€™re trading the stock market, not the real economy. I donâ€™t think any investor found any comfort in the fact that the real economy was not in a recession in 1987 after Black Monday. Even the author himself shows how since 1945 the frequency, duration, and magnitude of the business cycle has decreased considerably. In particular, there have only been 5 recessions in the last 40 years. Thatâ€™s an average of 1 recession every 8 years. In fact, the average has been more like 1 recession every 12 years since the beginning of the secular bull maker that started in the early 80â€™s. That might be just too infrequent to be used as the foundation for an investment strategy.Another problem with the business cycle approach is that it uses old data. Although there are some leading indicators around, in general all these macroeconomic data is about the past. And, as we know, the stock market is a forward looking mechanism. So, if you have to wait for the macro data, you will more often than not be late to the party.In general, I think there are much easier and efficient ways to play the market cycles. That starts with focusing on the actual tradeable cycles (those of the asset classes) instead of on the ones underlying the real economy.Now, there are two major positive aspects about this book. First, it is very original. There are not too many books on this topic. In fact, I only know of one (Expected Returns by Ilmanen), and that actually has a more academic bias. Second, it approaches the analysis of macroeconomic events using the right methodology. That is, it avoids the rigidity of mathematical models from academia to favor an approach based on history, concepts, and common sense. That is not a minor point. In fact, it is huge one. The reason why this is a very educational read beyond its practical implementation.

This is simply the best book I have found when it comes to connecting the macroeconomic cycle with investing. Will be too advanced for novice investors, but if you manage money then you need this book on your shelf. Simply awesome.

As others have said, this is perhaps the best investing book I have ever read. Everything before this seems trivial and like noise. The author provides simple but seemingly accurate (backed by historical correlations and research) explanations for what happens, why, and what one can anticipate in this conditions. This is a no-kidding â€˜how-toâ€™ macro invest book.

The book is an excellent overview of the drivers of many different asset classes over the past 30-60 years. It is a nice overview, but as one would expect, it is hard to impossible to get into tremendous depth for every asset class in just 250 pages. I specialize in equities and I found a lot of that section quite remedial. However, if you are not an equities professional, you may find it provides a reasonable amount of data. While some sections were lacking on a lot of actionable insight, I found the whole book quite worth my time, as I think that it gives some good long term perspective behind the performance of various asset classes since 1970, while also giving some solid insight into where we stand in the current cycle.

As a layman, I found this to be an excellent read and basis to avoid the simple "buy and hold". It would have been nice to have had a more"balanced" portfolio in my youth during 2000-2001 and 2008. Ignorance was not bliss at that time ;-)Having no formal education in economics (though some grad level stat classes), I was able to still glean significant and relevant information.

This great book was passed around here at MarketCycle. It was written by someone that clearly knows their way around financial markets and market cycles in particular. It is mainly geared toward professional investors and money managers that already have some experience. I do not know the author (Robert McGee). If you manage money professionally, my advice is to buy the book and then read it twice.

I call it the Macroeconomic Investment Strategy Bible. Enough said, but this book is my backbone and foundation of operating as a high-net-worth Portfolio Manager.

STARRED REVIEW. An unsung hero and literacy champion whose teaching changed many lives. Halfmann and Ladd tell the remarkable, true story of Lilly Ann Granderson, an enslaved woman born around 1821 in Petersburg, Virginia. Following the death of her mother, Lilly Ann was sold to a Kentucky slave owner. The master's children would often play school and included Lilly Ann, teaching her to read. They even gave her an "old ragged blue-back speller...to use and keep," which she used to practice in private and teach others on the plantation. However, when her master died, she was sold to a cotton plantation in Natchez, Mississippi, where it was illegal for slaves to learn to read. Though Lilly Ann faced much higher penalties there in restarting her school, she expanded her education efforts. However, when the patrollers caught her leading her slave school the punishment for which was 39 lashes the authorities found "no law against a slave teaching a slave." This picture book's detailed, realistic illustrations were created using acrylic paint and colored pencil. Ladd's artwork shows Lilly Ann's determination to improve lives through literacy and will also familiarize readers with the book's historical settings. An informative afterword and bibliography will make this a useful addition to U.S. history lessons. An excellent homage to an African-American woman who taught ahead of her time. --Kirkus Reviews

This story, however, depicts an "unknown" African American woman who was born into slavery and denied the gifts of reading and writing until, under her first master, his children taught Lilly Ann to read and write. Lilly Ann was a "remarkable" woman who, in a secret cabin, taught hundreds of enslaved people to read and write. She took a huge risk to educate so many, year after year... Lilly Ann Granderson was, and still is, an inspiration to all! She followed her dream for the benefit of others... Janet Halfmann wrote a beautiful piece of history with this story!

I had never heard of Lilly Ann Gunderson, but author Janet Halfmann makes her come alive. A brave and courageous woman who taught herself to read, and then, under cover of night, while fearing for her life, taught other enslaved people to read. The illustrations by London Ladd perfectly complement this fascinating story.

A lovely book about a fantastic woman.Everyone should read it. Pictures are great and colorful will use it in my classroom.

Lilly Ann Granderson secretly taught many slaves to read and write before and after the Civil war. It was a daring and risky undertaking, so it was done at night. Even though they risked severe punishment by being beaten, Lilly Ann Granderson and her students felt it was worth the risk to become educated and have a chance for a better life and even the ability to escape to freedom in the North.Ms. Halfmann put a lot of careful research into bringing this story to students, teachers, and librarians. At the back of the book is an Afterword about accomplishments directly attributable to Lilly Ann Grandersonâ€™s teaching and efforts to establish schools; plus, thereâ€™s information on the lives and contributions of her descendants. Ms. Halfmann has included several excellent Selected References for further reading and study.This is a great historical addition to classrooms and school libraries to show how important literacy and education are to peopleâ€™s lives, especially to people like Blacks and other minorities who have constantly been denied equal educational opportunities throughout their history in America. Midnight Teacher is highly recommended for students, teachers, and librarians. Lee and Low Books list this book for reading level grade 2 to 6. The detailed illustrations by artist London Ladd clearly show and clarify what is happening in Lilly Grandersonâ€™s story, which helps lower grade students to visualize and better understand the seriousness of that period in history.I'm a long time children's and YA book reviewer. Midnight Teacher: Lilly Ann Granderson and Her Secret School is an intense and moving biography of a remarkable woman. I won't give away the intriguing details, but at each turn in her enslaved life, she found ways to sustain herself and improve herself, then she lifted the lives of others by teaching. Rare circumstances allowed her to learn to read, and read well, at a very young age. She read everything she could get her hands on, including discarded newspapers that revealed a potential path to freedom in the North. She realized as a child and throughout her life that education was the key to FREEDOM. The enslaved people surrounding her understood this, too. The power-based reasons for prohibiting the teaching of slaves is explained simply and well in the book.Even as a child, she confronted the serious risks of teaching other enslaved children, sneaking off with them to share the keys to literacy, and they welcomed Lilly Ann's brave efforts. Lilly Ann continued her calling to teach despite numerous changes, including being sold from border state Kentucky to deep-south Natchez, Mississippi.Each scene in this descriptive narrative is accompanied by deep-toned, thought-provoking images. Text and illustration combine to provide readers with remarkable insights into the driving forces that kept Lilly teaching throughout her life, long after the Civil War and slavery ended.The cover image is quite literal, illustrating that Lilly had to sneak through the darkest nights to pursue her goal of teaching others.
