On premise alone, Heidi Heilig’s The Girl from Everywhere was destined to win my affections. It blends real history with mythology from a slew of different cultures and eras and grounds it all in a cast of characters who are deeply flawed, yet deeply connected. In fact, reading it gave me a lot of the same feelings and vibes I got when I first read Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comics, which are some of my all-time favorite stories.And like with that series, reading it has sent my mind racing in so many different directions that I can barely hope to articulate my thoughts. So instead, I’ll throw open the hatch and let them spill out in any given order.I have a huge fascination with the materiality of media, and Heilig scratched that itch hard with her incorporation of the book’s various maps. First off, each map the crew Navigates into is actually printed on the page, with an art style that matches their description in the text. Second, there are specific rules for what kinds of maps work and which ones don’t. For the sake of avoiding spoilers, I won’t list them here, but the sum effect of these rules mean that maps only work for Navigation if their creators crafted them thoughtfully and if the map reader develops a relationship with the map. I love that. It’s a perfect microcosm for how all media affect us.The whole cast is lively, diverse, and fun, but the relationship between Nix and her father really steals the show. Heilig perfectly captures the subtleties of a dysfunctional child-parent relationship. Nix’s ultimate decision—to stay by her father or leave him—truly feels like it’s hanging in the balance right until the very end, and I think in large part that’s because of the raw reality of their relationship. They push each other away, pull back together, accept each other, reject each other, witness each other, and fail to witness each other, and the sheer messiness of it all resonates as beautifully true to life.On a thematic level, Heilig artfully dances with topics that don’t come with many clear answers. Is love a meaningful connection between people, or a one-sided neurological glitch? Is truth an external object that we can find, or is it an internal creation that we have to nurture ourselves? Which paths in life are more important: the ones we choose ourselves or the ones that choose us? Heilig honors these tough questions by letting her characters (and by extension, the reader) explore the ambiguities and paradoxes implied. Like all the greatest authors, Heilig seems less interested in making a final “point” about any of the topics and more interested in inviting readers to think them through themselves.In short, The Girl from Everywhere is a fun, enlightening, heart-tugging read. Go for it!

Let me start by saying what a brilliant author Heidi is. Not only is her story engaging, but her meticulous planning and artful weaving of the plot leaves my mind blown with all expectations hit out of the proverbial park."Paradise is a promise no god bothers to keep. There's only now, and tomorrow nothing will be the same, whether we like it or not."The majority of this book takes place in late 1800's Hawaii, and I love how well Heidi captures the vibes and feel of the paradisiacal island of Oahu. Her descriptions and tenderness towards the setting has me anxious to visit and feel and experience everything just as these characters did. I also really appreciated how Heidi captured the turning point where Hawaii lost more of its Hawaiian charm, culture, and authenticity and became overrun by foreign influence. It's a sad and tragic past, but someone has to tell it. So often it's written off as inconsequential, but Hawaii was annexed and diminished from its natural peacefulness in such a horrid way.The main character, Nix is really intuitive and easy to relate to. She struggles with her warring desires and her idea of home and family. Slate, her father, is quite an enigmatic and complex person. I loved his development in the book. Kashmir is dashing and the wittiest comic relief. The secondary characters were fleshed out and each had their own respective backstories. Mostly everyone was likable too. One of my favorite parts of the book was the evolving relationship between Nix and Slate. Slate's monomaniacal obsession with saving Nix's mother in the past really fractured any genuine father-daughter relationship. I loved seeing their relationship grow, and my favorite scene in the whole novel happens between these two.The romance in this book is kept to a minimum and although it looks like there might be a love triangle forming, it's hardly there at all and won't overshadow the plot or your love for the book. Also this is a duology, so everything will develop and sort itself out in the next book.I was hooked on this book immediately from the beginning. The idea of this story is so well developed and explained. It was fascinating learning about the time travel and the importance of maps. I love how Heidi mixed various fantasy/myth and historical elements into her story. We get to read of places and elements we're familiar with and other creatures and destinations that are innovative creations. Some parts were a bit confusing at times with the time travel, but everything happens for a reason, and all is revealed by the end. There are so many unexpected events in this novel; the unpredictability of this adventure novel was a definite hit for me. I also love the incorporation of diverse cultures placed in the novel.This book could read as a standalone, but there's one more book to give us another amazing adventure with this great cast of characters and a phenomenal author. I can't recommend this book enough!

Dr. recommended this to us, so I got it for my 17 year old son. He wouldn't do it on his own for sure, but I assigned 3 chapters a week as a chore, the chapters are so short, that might take 30 minutes total. I look over his answers later. I think it is a fairly painless way to get your ADHD kid to take a look at themselves and some possible solutions.

The activities are short, but thoughtful. We've been doing them together since my teen can't muster enough focus for one more thing after trying hard all day at school. I can see how they lead the reader along into reframing how they think and feel and react to ADHD. I also bought the Mindfulness one and think they will make a great one-two punch to help my teen prep for college since he's still struggling in high school.

This was meant for teenagers that are 16-17 who can reflect on themselves. It is not meant for younger teens

My daughter, who has ADD, completed this book in three days. She loved it and found it really helpful. I recommend it!!!

I like that it acknowledges various challenges, and breaks them up into small activities to help the teen be introspective to what challenges they are having and provides ideas on how to tackle them to be successful.

Great lesson for individual counseling or group. I use these lessons with my students in small groups and individual counseling sessions.

This is a great workbook. It's relatable for my teen, not boring. When he sits down with this, it engages him.

Our 11 year old has the Kindle version and really appreciated the book as it sort of told her that she was ok and not so different as she has ADHD. The only problem with the Kindle version is the exercises which she had to do in her head so we also bought the book version so she could complete them.

I agree with the other reviewers this is things I already know and have heard over and over. I was looking for something with more of a natural approach and this is not that. So if that's what you have in mind(natural approach) do not buy this book.

This is one of the better books on this topic. They prefer that you see an allergy specialist rather than a GP."The incidence of food allergy is much higher for children than for adjutls - 8 percent of those under three, and rising." The author claims that adults have outgrown food allergies which lowers it to 2% for the general population. The best part of the book was where he told parents if other people don't consider you "neurotic" then you are not being vigilant enough protecting your allergic child. The only "fault" the book may have is there is nothing offered as a reasonable cause for the epidemic of food allergies. Science can now look at live blood, we have so much research that has been done, but no one really knows what causes food allergies? Why is it that undeveloped countries have almost no food allergies?

As a general practice pediatrician, it pretty much tells you a lot of what I have often shared with my patients already. The book is informative, reviewing a lot of detail you would not otherwise get from your physician in even a few appointments.While a catchy title, the book sounds like it will offer some sort of countercultural message. The book does not do this, for those who are looking for that sort of information.Most importantly, the information we have learned over the last 7 years or so has changed and some of the information in the book has quickly become outdated (e.g., a more nuanced view of maternal allergen avoidance, or highly allergenic food introduction in infants). Let's hope a newer edition of the book is in the works, perhaps with a more straightforward title.

There is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma (and many allergies as well) is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends that all asthma sufferers take supplemental magnesium daily -- 600 mg daily for addults (proportionally less, according to their body weight, for children). People with asthma who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with asthma under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. For your child's sake, please read Dr. Dean's important book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve this terrible ailment. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective.

I found this book to be a regurgitation of what I had already been told by two pediatricians regarding my 4 year olds recently diagnosed asthma. Nothing new here at all. I was surprised that the doctors do not seem to acknowledge the large role diet plays in a condition such as asthma. I am not a doctor, however, even I can see the significant link between diet and health. Since my son's asthma diagnosis a month ago, I have dramatically restructured his diet and began supplementing him with magnesium. Guess what?! My son has shown significant improvement over the past 3 weeks! Even his allergies seem to have improved. I am proud to report my son hasn't taken a single asthma or allergy medication in two weeks. If you are resigned to a life of medication and supporting the multi-million dollar pharmaceutical company's, then this is the book for you.

This book is a good book to help define and aid in the understanding in causes of Asthma and different allergies, but I was hoping for more information that I could use at home to help reduce chances for asthma attacks and my son's allergy induced asthma.

I am so glad I read this kindle book. At first I was hesitant because my husband died 8 years ago and was concerned this book would be depressing and bring sadness to my heart. It had the opposite effect. I knew hospice and hospice nurses were wonderful, but this book helped me look at death in a different way. Eased some of my own fears about dying. I am so glad this book was written and I was able to read it. When it's my time to go and if I am i hospice I pray I have a hospice nurse like the one who wrote this book. This book should be at all hospice houses.

This book was all I hoped for and more! Getting first hand accounts from someone who saw death on a regular basis and was able to articulate the process in such a manner that was not at all depressing, and even had me laughing and crying at the same time! I feel like I've sat down with the author, shared a cup of coffee, and talked in person! Great job! With this book, she continues to help ease the minds of people who question the process of dying.

Excellent look at what hospice looks like from the eyes of a hospice nurse, and engagingly written. I found myself eagerly looking forward to the next story, macabre as that may sound. It's short (about 160 pages) but reasonably priced.There are good deaths, there are bad deaths, and there are needlessly awful deaths. I will never forget the description of the daughter who so desperately wanted to "help" her dying father that she tube fed liquids until they were literally coming out of the dead man's nose.Unless we are the first among our friends and family to die, chances are we will have to watch someone we love die. Hospice is a good option for many people; it is not the right option for everyone. The author takes pains to tell a story where hospice was NOT the right choice, actually added to the dying woman's suffering, but the family was insistent upon it.While we can't control dying, and there are many things about it we cannot change, there ARE things we can choose: for ourselves, and for our loved ones, that make the transition from this life to what comes next, a bit easier. I highly recommend this book for those who are faced with their own imminent demise, or that of a loved one.I recommend it even more for those who are not currently facing these kinds of situations, so that you can ponder the "what-if's" when you're NOT emotionally charged.

I found this book to be most informative whether you are the patient and in need of hospice care, or you are the care giver. Yes, it can be a bit scary but it's way better to be informed than not. Information is powerful. This is well written, and not so heavy that you need to avoid the issue. I loved her out of body experience, and am so glad she shared it, as I had an experience with that too, thinking I was ready for the funny farm for a long time. I'm not so alone now. THANK YOU for this book from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I feel that so many people could benefit from Hospice care if more health care professionals would be open, honest, and compassionate with their patients. Both of my parents were in Hospice and I continually encourage anyone with a terminal illness to seek out the wonderful care they can provide for the entire family.

I enjoyed this book because of its ever rarer authenticity about interactions with people, and the author's candid depiction of her memorable (and sometimes dangerous & confrontational) experiences with the dying and their families. The big surprise is the author's own experience with death, and her revelatory experience therein. This book delivers a message of reality with biological processes that is intertwined with a spiritual undertone throughout. A timeless message of relationship in a time of broadening tchnological isolation.

I chose to read because our daughter in law is a hospice nurse. I've always appreciated what she does, and now I definitely respect the things she does to assist the dying! More prayers for these dear workers. I couldn't stop once I started reading.

I will have to say the author really did not hold anything back when writing this book, or so it seems. She was up front, honest, and very compassionate.I really would love to see more nurses like her.Sadly, computers and government regulations interfere with being able to do more hands on in medicine. Even the new doctors are not old school in how they treat patients. They had a more hands on approach, too. Well, Heidi, as a retired health care worker, I applaud you for this book and your work in helping dying patients. Thank you so much for a great book. I too, have been there and done that and understand what you went through. An by the way, I surely know the problems of having a nasty uncaring boss, who is more interested in money than the poor patient!

The book has some great information, but the formatting could be much friendlier. Often there are 3 or more equations for the same calculation that are used as the material is introduced and additional complicating factors are included, but that is not made clear, leaving confusion about which form of the equation should be used. Reformatting to introduce the important final result, then working through the development of the result would be good. Or some other formatting method to make the important final result equations and summary stand out from the intermediate simplified steps

Brilliant collection of techniques for successful high speed design. I recommend it to anyone studying SI.Would buy again!!

This book is an indepth detailed and mathematical explanation of signal integrity. I fully recommend this book to learn about the basics and the details of signal integrity. I started reading this book with a background of electronics but only a brief understanding of signal integrity. This book got me up to speed with everything I need to know for the modern electronics industry and provides an important reference in my library. I fully recommend it.The only failing of the book is that it can be a little too mathematical. With completely equations of various effects provided but nothing useful (if less accurate) that you can use on a day-to-day basis to make design decisions with.

I work with Howard Heck in committee. These guys wrote an excellent treatise on the subject.

I recommend it to other SI engineers that are looking for more advanced SI information. For me, there were a fair number of sections that helped fill in the gaps on my understanding. Which is great.

A really good book! Written by signal integrity engineers at Intel who know the problems of SI firsthand and the modern solutions to those problems.

Good quality

Heck and Hall have done a fantastic job in summarizing both the theory and practice of solving today's SI issues. The math behind topics such as linear network theory, frequency-dependent dielectric effects and filter design for equalization is rigorous, yet ample space is set aside for practical guidance as well. Of particular note is their thorough treatment of hot PCB SI topics as dielectric loss and surface roughness modeling, and preservation of causality in transmission line models. Transmitter and receiver equalization (DFE and CTLE) are well-described, as are analysis techniques such as peak distortion and bit-error rate. Finally, their summary of response surface modeling (RSM) approaches to desgn of experiments (DOE) is perhaps the first and certainly the most comprehensive overview of those methods as applied to PCB SI design available today. A book well worth purchasing if you are involved in SI modeling, SI simulation or PCB design.

Isabel Wilkerson can write. Her book reads with a wonderful flow. I will wait for her next book and will read it. I hope it does not take her usual 7 years of research. This book did not "do it" for me. It was soooo loooong --- much of it reads like an almanac . I learned more than I wanted to know about black migration from the south. Wilkerson definitely learned too much in her research, and told it ALL. By the end of the book I didn't care about the characters, Ida Mae, Robert and George were just vehicles to get the facts down on paper. The characters were real enough but the stories were lacking. I did not enjoy this book. It was a struggle to read.

I would give this book a thousand stars if I could. I'm very grateful to the author and everyone she interviewed for sharing these stories with me.This book has deeply affected me. Others have reviewed the content, writing style and extensive research. My comments are of a more personal nature.Until I read this book I would have told you I (a white Southern woman in her 50s) was particularly well-informed about the experience of African Americans, having read almost all of the authors she quoted in the book and many she didn't, including Toni Morrison, Zora Neale Hurston and more contemporary authors, having studied the civil rights movement from my armchair and seeking out African American theater, arts, and friends. I was wrong. I was ignorant. I didn't know about the Great Migration. I had picked up bits and pieces of the extent of Jim Crow from my reading, and I had read them from the perspective of someone who wanted to draw from their experience without being, apparently, very curious about the context of it. This book, these stories, opened my eyes by putting the experiences in chronological order and in context. Without ever being maudlin, divisive, or melodramatic, the author struck a tone that allowed the reader, me, to feel the power of these stories. The author did a great service to the people she interviewed and her readers by allowing us to decide how we feel about these stories. She confidently and brilliantly presented them in a matter-of-fact manner and in the exact words of the person describing their own experience, trusting, correctly that their emotional impact would not be missed. By focusing on every day experiences rather than sweeping generalities, the book allowed me to see the insidious and pervasive nature of Jim Crow, how it affected every moment of every day, how no action could be too insignificant to be viewed as a threat to the social order and therefore to involve the risk of one's life. I had no idea that it was illegal for black people to work outside the cotton fields or orange groves, nor did I have any idea it was so dangerous to leave the south. These lives and stories are deeply, deeply affecting. It helped (although it hurt emotionally) to simultaneously read The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander and The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay, a novel about apartheid in South Africa.I personally thank the author and everyone she interviewed. Deepest gratitude.

If you have a difficult time finding a copy of this book, blame me. I have been telling everyone I know about it and one well-placed friend is buying hundreds of copies to share with friends in Africa who are perplexed by the predicament so many Black Americans find themselves in to this day.The Warmth of Other Suns paints the picture as compellingly and completely as anything I've ever seen or read. As the stories of desperation, ambition and flight unfold, the reader can see just how many ways the American Dream was yanked away, hidden or otherwise made inaccessible to one generation after another. George, for example, could have been so much more than a railroad porter. He wanted to be more. He TRIED to be more. He even went to college at a time when that was all but unheard of for a young black man from the citrus belt of Florida. Danger and deprivation robbed him of that opportunity and all of the possibilities that would have come with it. Instead, he ended up an overworked denizen of substandard housing, with broken knees and bad kidneys from all the years of picking oranges and tangerines then stacking and unloading luggage on railroad runs along the eastern seaboard. Meanwhile, his New York-born-and-raised children -- not privy to the "village" atmosphere of family and child-rearing of George's native Southland -- were left to fend for themselves in the impersonal, take-a-number concrete jungle of an overpopulated city and, with limited options, spent their energies on getting into, or ducking, trouble. The reader can just see the State of Black America take shape.This is an absolute masterpiece by a virtuoso writer. As I neared the end of it, I got the blues, knowing how much I would miss reading it. So, I did what any right-thinking person would do: I read it again.Please do yourself a huge favor and read this.
