I really hate to give the book a 1-star rating. I own a number of Ms. Yin-Fei Lo's other books (physical copies) and like them very much, but I have to add my complaint to the others about the publisher's callous disregard for blatant typos that make the Kindle version unusable.Most obviously, none of the fractions in the ingredients list display properly. For the most part, they show up only as the "fraction line", without numbers at all, though if I recall correctly, a few do display the denominator, but without the numerators! And it's not just fractions, regular numbers separated by hyphens are also screwed up. Ingredient quantities like (what I assume should be) "4-5 quarts water" for example, display without the first two characters at all (i.e., " 5 quarts water"). In many cases one can make an educated guess as to the missing number, but I wasn't about to keep the book - even though it's very inexpensive right now on sale - with such egregious formatting problems that have gone unresolved for at least 3 years.I'll also note that there at least appear to be other errors, though they're less obvious, and could conceivably just be unusual quantities of ingredients. But I do seriously question the ingredients entry in the "Chicken Stock" recipe, for example (the only one I noticed before returning the book for a refund), which calls for " 4 ounces" of coriander sprigs. Seriously? Multiple OUNCES? I live in NYC, which I mention only because we have many thoroughly authentic Chinese restaurants as well as the more generally common Americanized sort, and I've been eating Chinese food regularly and frequently since I was a kid (45 years ago), but I've never once tasted chicken broth with as strong an obvious flavor of coriander as that amount would give in the quantity of stock the recipe makes. If the author were unknown to me, I might just assume it was an "unusual" recipe, but as far as I've ever seen, Ms. Yin Fei-Lo's recipes are within "generally expected parameters", so in this case I can only assume it's some sort of full-blown typographical error rather than even just a problem with the conversion from physical to e-book format.In short, the Kindle ebook is a sad waste of bytes and pixels...

I love this book (I have the hardcover and kindle editions), but unfortunately the kindle edition STILL, after over a year, does not display fractions. Why does quality control suck so badly on so many kindle books?Update: prompted by another review, I looked at the book again. It looks like they have corrected the fractions issue!!! Too bad it took so long, but i’m happy now.

This cookbook, like most of Eileen Yin-Fei Lo's cookbooks, is focused on authentic Chinese cuisine and is not a Chinese takeout cookbook. As the book does not cut corners, it includes the presence of some Chinese ingredients which may be difficult to find outside an Asian supermarket. For example, the cookbook includes a number of recipes which would be considered banquet or special occasion foods and include ingredients such as Shark's Fin and Bird's Nest. Nevertheless, this book does include a number of everyday recipes such as Ma Po Tofu and Hunan Hot and Spicy Shrimp, which can be made after a trip to the Asian foods aisle of most supermarkets, and provides useful recipes for Chinese sauces, such as XO sauce, which are usually purchased prepared. This cookbook is definitely geared toward people who are more accustomed to traditional Chinese cooking or are interested in how Chinese food is outside the local takeout place. Mastering the Art of Chinese Cooking includes a number of beautiful pictures of the prepared food and provides a taste of what Chinese home cooking can really be like.

I write this review as one who has been stir frying for many years, but never had a real Chinese cookbook, nor ever learned from anyone how to cook Chinese in an authentic way. I heard about this book on The Splendid Table podcast as a recommendation for the book to get to really learn how to cook authentic Chinese. I ordered it immediately, and holy cow, the lady on the show was right!I have no idea how it compares to other books about learning to cook Chinese, but this is exactly what I've been wanting for years but never bothered to look for.It's not just recipes - it's the philosophy of various kinds of Chinese cooking set in the cultural context from which it came, with lucid, informative, and fun reasonings and descriptions of what individual ingredients do, why they're used, and how they are working with the other ingredients to bring out flavors, textures, and aromas.From the basics of how to make broth and cook rice to highly advanced dishes, she covers a huge range of styles from different geographies, and makes it all sing with her word pictures and personal stories and observations.It's also beautifully made - this is a seriously heavy hardback book with glorious full-color photographs. A work of art by itself.Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn how to cook in a Chinese style, or who just wants to know more about the hows and whys of Chinese food.

Great book! Really delves into some of the nuances that create genuine and successful Chinese dishes. It's also a great read to immerse yourself into some of the cultural history behind Chinese cuisine.

It's insights are surreal and now I have a simple yet powerful tool to achieve self-control, happiness, awareness and most of all "to start living life for the first time in 47 years!". simple, yet profound...Thich Nhat Hanh is a magical philosopher and writer... words are barely able to convey the power and breadth of ideas, written with such concise simplicity, in his masterful writings. he stands among the great philosophers and spiritual teachers of all time and he is one of the rare masters who can articulate with such peaceful, easy clarity.25 years ago, i was introduced to his philosophy and writing with a gift of "the miracle of mindfulness" and have resonated and grown continually with his teachings of living in the "present" ever since... once you read it and get it, you will never forget and never be the same... you can not erase it...it is with you forever...and, of course, washing dishes will never be the same.he is truly inspiring by articulating how to be "present" with such ease and understanding... his writing is for all; the academic, the layman, the advanced psychological professional, the veteran, the novice, etc. there is no one that can not relate to and benefit from his teachings and exercises, if you will, on being mindful and present (yes, redundant to many). my belief is there is more power in being "present", than any other single psychological philosophy... and Thich Nhat Hanh articulates it and teaches "ease without effort" ... always succinct and his writing is as magical as his concepts.i just loaned out "the miracle of mindfulness" to a friend who is either in a state of anxiety in the "future" or a state of depression in the "past" ... rarely, if ever, productively at peace in the "present" ... she left with it, eager and optimistic to begin the process of healing and advancing her psychology to living always in the present...in my mind, "you are here" furthers the philosophy of mindfulness and living joyfully, peacefully, and entirely fulfilled by actively living in the "present"...the enormity of self-improvement philosophers and teachers is overwhelming... choices of books are endless... but, if you want a simple, yet profound easy to read author, than you would be hard pressed to beat Thich Nhat Hanh.with deepest gratitude, Thank you, Thich Nhat Hanh and all who helped bring you and "You Are Here" to me and to others whom i will share it with...most sincerely, deke . :-)

I don't think I am going to be able to say anything about Thich Nhat Hanh that hasn't been said before but I can let you know about my experience. I started attending a local Zen Center to help me with meditation. I had passing familiarity with some of the concepts discussed in this book but this is a highly accessible format. I would say this is a great introduction and introduces some more advanced concepts if you want to dive dealer.

The magic of the present moment is alive and breathing in this book. It's like reading the transcript of one of Thich Nhat Hanh's talks. Great bedside book and a wonderful introductory to one of the fundamental aspects of practicing buddhism.

So far, I've read 5 of Thich Nhat Hanh's books. All have been helpful and eyeopening. This one was the easiest and most pleasant to read (and by far the most helpful). He covers all of the basics. Great for beginners to the path and for those who have been on the road for awhile. I loved this book, and its many positive messages and techniques, so much that I bought a copy for a co-worker.

Mr. Hanh writes in layman terms so it is pretty easy to understand the concepts and ideas he talks about.As soon as I finished this book, I wanted to start practicing mindfulness meditation and I wanted to start living mindfully!!

AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ!! You will soon learn the necessity and joy of living in the present moment and be amazed to discover that a good many people actually sleepwalk through life, not realizing to appreciate each moment as it unfolds. Buddhist Monk Thich Nhat Hanh shows us the way to breathe properly and provides us simple awareness exercises to enrich our lives.

If you are a Thich Nhat Hanh fan....then this is a MUST. This is one of my FAVORITES....It puts me in a sacred space, and reminds me that what is important is in this moment right now. If I'm having stress, all I have to do is listen to this and I immediately start focusing on my breath. This CD will stay in my car, so that I can take it everywhere!! A must have.

I teach elementary music and have found it hard to find 12 Days books with lyrics in the right order. Some books reverse the lords and the drummers or various things. This book gets the order straight (12 drummers drumming, 11 pipers piping, 10 lords a-leaping, 9 ladies dancing, etc.). The only words that gave me a moment's pause were on number 4: "collie birds" instead of "calling birds." I had to search the internet to find out that "collie birds" is an old English term for "blackbirds." I suppose as things get passed in oral traditions this could be one variation of the song, and the sound difference is so slight that if it really bothers you, you could still sing "calling birds." That said, the illustrations are gorgeous: renaissance colors and clothing styles with a modern attention to realistic detail. The detail is in EVERYTHING, so you really have to search (or check the inside of the jacket cover) to find all of the hidden pictures. If you are a fan of Mark Buehner or Tasha Tudor's books or love searching pictures in the "I Spy" series, this is the book for you. I've already found 6 geese a-laying on the partridge page and tons of other things that aren't listed in the answer key. My family is going to cherish this.

"The Twelve Days of Christmas," illustrated by Laurel Long, is an absolute gem to be treasured by your family for years to come. I have been an elementary teacher and have collected children's picture books, especially children's Christmas picture books, and I can truthfully say this is one of the most beautifully illustrated children's Christmas books I have ever seen. The book measures 9 3/8 inches by 11 3/4 inches and has 30 pages. Every page is a full page full color adventure in color and an unimaginable display of details. You can stare at a page for many minutes and get lost in the imaginations of your mind. Both children and adults will see something new each time they stare at the beautiful oil painting illustrations. Each colored page also has illuminated edges. There are two magnificently colored pages for each of the numbered days of Christmas -- one page has the words to the verse from the song discreetly placed so as not to interfere with the integrity of the beautiful illustration and the other page contains just an illustration.. The dust jacket is a real splendor of color illustrating the partridge in a pear tree surrounded by traditional Christmas decorated illumination. The pictorial cover of the book contains the same illustration.The next to last two pages contain the song, including the words and the music. The very last page contains a brief history of the song and delves into the various interpretations to the origin and the meaning of the song. There is an added surprise for the reader. Because this is a cumulative song, the reader is challenged to find all the previously mentioned gifts in each of the illustrations. Of course as you advance to the larger numbered days of Christmas, there is more to find in each picture. This can be a fun challenge. To help the reader find these objects there is a small tab at the bottom of the front dust jacket flap that reads, "Look on the underside of the jacket for a key to the hidden gifts." If you remove the dust jacket and look on the underside you will will see a small black and white reproduction of each page from the book. On these small page reproductions you will find red numbers corresponding to the various Christmas Day gifts showing you where they are found in each of the pictures in the book.I originally bought this book to donate to my elementary school library but when I saw it, I just knew I had to have one for myself and several for gifts. I don't know where I have been, but this is my first exposure to the work of Laurel Long. I sure would love to purchase one of her paintings. You owe it to yourself just to see these marvelous illustrations once in your lifetime!

I was hesitant to buy this version of the book since I had a beautiful one from a different illustrator as a child. I thought the one i owned was just so beautiful- but them I read the reviews and purchased this jewel! This is the most beautifully illustrated book I have ever seen. My son is three months old and loves the colors! I wish I had gotten a hardcover copy because it is worth it as a keepsake.

I purchased this book 4 years ago. The artwork is incredibly beautiful. what makes it even more enjoyable is the fun we have finding all the hidden objects in each picture. My daughters love this book, as do I. It has become a part of our Christmas tradition. We look forward to it, every year.

The artwork was wonderful, with pictorial images of the previous pages found "hidden" on every page. "Where's Waldo" for the 12 Days! And the litmus test for my wife - "Four Collie Birds" was the reading for the fourth day.

This is the most beautifully illustrated book I’ve read for the length and detail, the gorgeous hues, hidden figures, and the pure enjoyment of studying each fascinating page!!!

This is such lovely book with great illustrations. We take each day of the Twelve Days, starting with Christmas Day, and find the symbols on that day. It is fun to search and search.

This is the most impressive book I have seen. So lovely that I did not want to give it to my granddaughter. But she loved it so much and was good, even at her her young age of 2 1/2, of finding the hidden figures. The art work is delightful, really enticing.

OK as far as it goes. A brief intro to the intellectual processes involved in designing a fantasy world map. For the price, i would have liked more. For example, a more extensive list of software, and some work-in-progress illustrations showing how a map can be built up step by step, and the consequences of making one choice rather than another.The book is also a mechanism for marketing the author's software. I don't have a problem with that. What I do have a problem with is including a link inside the book which doesn't work, also having to search through many webpages for over ten minutes to find out what technical platform the software requires (it is Windows).There are also some minor typographic issues.This book has good bones and there is nothing wrong with the basic approach it takes to the topic. The problem is, it's a bit rough and ready, and ultimately I was disappointed by what I got for the money.

I have been a fantasy and science fiction cartographer for almost 25 years. This was a very simple read, lots of whitespace, done in a casual, hands-on folksy manner with examples. This is for the absolute beginner Gamer or Fantasy novelist who is curious or wants to design a basic map, but has no idea how or where to start. If you are already using Gimp, Photoshop, Campaign Cartographer 3(+), Hexographer, or Inkarnate, you can skip this text as you already have the tools this author recommends. Not really in depth, the author covers the basics of continent outline, climate bands, groundcover very basic tectonics, more or less at an early high school level of overview. So if you have a teenage child starting out as a GM, this would be an okay starter. If you are an aspiring novelist looking for a really deep worldbuilding resource, this is not that sort of in-depth treatment. It is nice that the author goes step by step, with some color graphics examples showing how to do a basic continent, some forests, cities, mountains, and rivers, with Campaign Cartographer at a very very introductory level, ending with a very simple map. The author is also encouraging, and seems to be actively promoting the community, via twitter / social media.

As a major worldbuilder for my novels, I have always strived to learn more and to try and be as professional as possible in creating worlds. I picked this book up as an affordable resource because you never know when you might learn something new.Overall the book is fairly decent. There is a lot of “common sense” stuff, but it is stuff I have seen other authors overlook or make mistakes on, so it is good not to assume everyone knows the basics.While it does seem to be geared more for amateur worldbuilders, there is also some decent info in here for more experience folks too. The section about wind patters and climate bands was very enlightening, which is why I decided to give the book the round up to four stars.The loss of stars, though, is because there were some “absolutes” given as rules by the author that are inaccurate. The one that bugged me most was along the lines of “rivers merge, they don’t divide”. While that is generally true, river bifurcation is possible with the right conditions. I actually researched river bifurcation before having a river split in the world I created for my Chadash Chronicles. I think it would behoove the author to do some research on river bifurcation and flesh out his section on rivers with that more complete and accurate information.I found the above doubly irritating because right after saying that, on the author’s own example map, he has a river split TWICE before reaching the ocean. The irony of that flub cost a star.The other half star came from his absolute that “forests can’t be next to deserts”. That also is not true. There are a number of real world examples of this, although generally this is because the desert is overtaking forestland. In fact, the Sahara used to be lush green land, according to some scientists. So while desert nexts to forests are not the norm, again some more fleshing out of the exceptions and conditions under which this general rule might be violated would make this a much stronger, better, and more complete book.All in all I would recommend it to beginning worldbuilders as for the most part it does have some good general rules to make more realistic worlds/maps. With the fleshing out I mentioned above (perhaps in a Second Edition) this could go from good to fantastic as far as worldbuilding resources go.

The information is just enough to make sure water doesn't flow uphill or other nonsensical features of some fantasy maps. However, he could have used a better editor. There are numerous word choice errors, e.g. parameter for perimeter, and the like.

I'll give the book credit that it does have some useful perspectives like tectonic plates and climate implications on the realism of a world map. However, This book fell way short of my expectations. There is no good step by step DETAILS of actually MAKING the map itself. For example, I'm looking at including a forest and desert region on my map, what icons or graphics should I use to represent these? Nothing even close to that is in this book. In fact there aren't ANY GOOD examples of actual fantasy maps. And definitely not enough information for someone to actually sit down and draw a good map. The book gives you tips for THINKING about what a good map should have in generalities, but in my mind it really missed the mark as far as an actual Guide for map making. I also purchased "How to draw Fantasy Art & RPG Maps" by Jared Blando which I found to be much more helpful. Although it still lacked the samples I'm looking for like a legend / sample of different forest types, landscapes, and various ways of drawing certain features. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend Fantasy Map Making for people who want to actually draw their own maps. You can get all this same high level info off of a few youtube videos and free online reading.

Used this on a recent trip and was very disappointed, particularly in the restaurant recommendations & reviews. In addition, some of the travel information was flat out wrong -- the ferry information between Fajardo and Vieques had the schedule backwards. Luckily we caught the error before missing the ferry and throwing off our entire day/night. The whole ferry description was like an afterthought -- instead they focused on flying there ($150-300 pp) vs taking the $2 ferry. The book made it sound like it was travel in a 3rd world country but for us it was quite painless to rent a car, leave it overnight at the ferry, and catch the boat. The entire section on Vieques (where the best bio bay is) was pretty sparse, and missing some real gems for places to stay and restaurants. By day 3 of our week we ditched this book and relied on TripAdvisor and Yelp for local attractions and restaurants with MUCH greater success.

I used this in conjunction with tripadvisor, if you are planning to go to PR this is a great book of knowledge. I however used the tips and never really looked into it past that. USE AT&T! Just as a big plus if you can use an at&t phone with a good data plan you can use the GPS function on about 95% of the island with little issue. Google maps and apple maps each work very well. I zipped around in my rental without the "needed" gps. Our next trip will be more along the lines of the book. PR 2017 cant come soon enough.

This book was not very helpful. I felt I found more information just by googling things than finding them in the book. On two occasions we went to restaurants the book suggested and they were closed. I also wish there was more info on beaches. One beach the book suggested as a great beach was ok but a 15 minute hike down the beach thru a trail led us to a gorgeous hidden gem of a beach. We discovered this from trip advisor. That is a tip I buy these books for. My suggestion on this book for Puerto Rico is save your money and use the Internet.

Maybe I've been spoiled by Rick Steves's books, but this was a disappointment. The book was poorly organized and the reviews were vague and contradictory. It was difficult to make decisions based on the information in the book. For things that we really wanted to do (kayak the bioluminescent bays, go zip lining in the rainforest), there was next to no information. We figured it out, but not using by using this book. The maps were not helpful.

We went to PR last year, and decided to go back this year. I ordered this guide and found it to be up-to-date and fairly comprehensive. It gives a good overview (tough for print media) of the sites we visited last year, and good info for the places we plan to visit this year. Of course, nothing beats your own research for current info, but this guide does an excellent job without getting mired in a lot of info that's not helpful.If you're looking for assistance with your initial trip research, this is a good place to start.

I did not like the structure at all-I cannot really tell what is is, there are chapters and headlines but somehow I get lost as soon as I start lookibg thibgs up.However, a pro is def. That all addresses are given so that places should be easy to find as long as you do have internet. I feel like navigatibg with the given maps wpuld be difficult as they are not very detailled.Edit: after now using it for a bit I still do not like it.Most of it tells you where to eat- a certain Restaurant and what to chose from the menu.Not helping for traveling at all.

An excellent and functional overview. Very useful for our 2 week trip to P.R. I do want to say that the relative youth of the authors is apparent in some ratings. Trendier restaurants and clubs were often rated based as much on the scene as on the actual quality of the food. These are important factors for many travelers, and kitchens vary from night to night. That said, many dining recommendations were timely and right on. DO NOT MISS Salt Gastropub in Isla Verde!!! The most consistently perfect and astonishing meal that I have had in several years.

We just got back from a week in Puerto Rico and this book was invaluable. We took two books, this one and Moon's guide to San Juan and Puerto Rico's East Coast. I liked the Moon book because it was quite compact, but we found that the Fodor's guide ended up being our go-to book. It helped us find some fun surprises, including our favorite Old San Juan dinner experience (St. Germain Bistro & Cafe) and the fun seafood shacks in Pinones. The index in the back helped us go right to the page we needed and not waste time searching. We're already planning our next trip to Puerto Rico and this book will be the one to help us. We were very happy with it.
