Diana Butler Bass is the author of eight books on American religion, including Christianity After Religion, Christianity for the Rest of Us, and A People's History of Christianity. Her prose has a rhythm that beats with the heart of the topics she chooses; she’s homespun but authoritative; but her real gift is a unique ability to make deeply complex spiritual matters easy to understand. This is exactly what she’s done with her new book Grounded.Grounded teaches a vital truth that needs teaching, and it’s done with breathtaking simplicity through wonderful anecdotes from the author’s life. There are no complex parables or confusing academic language, just pure storytelling that grips the reader from start to finish. I give it my highest recommendation.The premise of Grounded is simple: God is everywhere: in the earth and all creation but also in that which connects us to the earth, our roots, our sense of home, our neighborhoods, and even in the commons where we gather. Therefore, being grounded is a vital step in the process of discovering God as He is within us and us within God. This is not to be confused with the “personal relationship” used by evangelical groups that preach what Ms. Butler Bass calls “the vertical God,” the one “up there” in “Heaven.” Many Christians consider spirituality and mysticism to be “new age” and dangerous to the saving of one’s soul, but Ms. Butler Bass makes the most powerful opposing arguments that I’ve ever read. Dear Ms. Bass; If your book had ceased with your Introduction I would have awarded you with a full five stars. You have accurately described the fear, angst and aloneness that one experiences when a pilgrim breaks away from a long standing religious philosophy. Yes, a person does have both the mixed emotions of utter excitement and complete dread as one embarks on this new-found spiritual journey. But, as stated previously, you should have stopped after the intro. but, alas, you did not. The reasoning for your transposition is explained in grave detail in the following chapters. Two of your major failures is that you both have a scant understanding of science leading you to make incomplete and/or inaccurate statements about you interpersonal interactions, and secondly you fail to question whether the Bible texts that you quote so freely in this tome are accurate and, more importantly, if the characters who are quoted as saying them existed at all. With this latter concern I realize that you come from a highly contained and close-minded academic background but, that being said, is this not the same background that you have championed yourself as being a person who has rejected your previous religious and spiritual state?Let me close with a word of caution for other readers of this and other spiritual auto-biographies. When we, as a people, come to realize that our religious affiliations have hampered, instead of encouraged, our spiritual growth and break away from it we rapidly come in contact with facts and events that we have been denied previous entree into. From this explosion of thoughts we have a strong tendency that because we took the ‘brave step’ and rejected past teachings we must now be experiencing what we have been blinded to see previously; THE TRUTH. While I can certainly understand the feeling and the freedom that accompanies it, please do not delude yourself or others to your newly found stance of being the trail blazer that all others should follow. For an example, let us say that we have a neighbour friend whose name is Bill. In addition to your friendship he is also friends with ten other people in the neighbourhood and each one of these are treasured by him but, more importantly, each one of these relationships is different and unique from all the others. Does this mean that Bill is a different person when he encounters another person? Of course not! Bill is simply Bill and always will be. In my mind this is identical to our relationship with God. Each person’s relationship is both different and unique as it is with Bill and his friends. When a person breaks away from a ‘group think’ set of beliefs, as the church presents, the new relationship you experience with God is also different and unique from everyone else’s. So please do not write books, as this one is, about how you have found the ‘truth’ and attempt to convince others to take the same path, form the same thoughts, or experience eternity the same way as you have for all of us are individuals and, being as such, are not meant to have the same experiences that you have had. Each one of us is to experience God in the manner that are abilities lead us. None of us need to create a list of tenets and encourage others to follow. None of us should recreate another set of rules, regulations and belief systems, for this is the binding factors that we escaped our original church to begin with...............

Such a cute concept for a children's book! I love the simple drawings too

Simple, sweet. A bit cheesy from the adult perspective, but my three year old loves it and the simple lines have helped her start sight reading, as she has memorized the story. Good for 2-5 year olds. The moral is that friends stick up for each other and look out for each other, and that life is more fun with a friend.

This is a story with very few sentences and a lot of heart. It's a very cute story about a stick and a stone, both lonely until they find each other. A short adventure ensues, and there is a lot of emotion in the simple story and drawings. My 3 and 5 year old sons really enjoy it.

Cute story to teach kids about friendship. Good size book for little kids, and sturdy pages for years of use. Simple reading- only a few words each page. Also good for learning vocabulary. Add prompts to enhance the story telling experience. Find a rock, stick(glue a fake leaf on) and a pinecone!

This is a wonderful book about inclusion, the power of friendship and the power of forgiveness, all wrapped up with beautifully simple illustrations. It was very simple to use for library storytime by gathering up small sticks, stones and pinecones and letting the kids glue googly eyes on them and take them home to recreate the story for their families. When I read it the first time, I had visions of the book "Hooper Humperdink, Not Him!" by Theo. LeSieg (Dr. Suess) that I read to my oldest when she was young. Both books teach an important lesson with very few words, but the message gets through.

We checked this book out from the local library and my 2 daughters (age 3 & 5) absolutely love it. It's a sweet story about friendship. When we returned the book to the library I immediately ordered a copy to keep.

This book is so sweet. The story is simple, but very catchy. My toddler (2 years, 4 months) is already reading along with me after just a few reads. I love that the message is all about sticking up for and helping out others in need- even if they are different than you. That lesson is a very important one I want to teach my son in this privileged and divisive culture.

This is a sweet story about friendship and using your unique abilities to help others. It is probably most appropriate for preschool and younger school age children, but there are some cute puns throughout the story to make an adult smile too.

My 3-year-old LOVES this book. A great rhyme scheme, lovely message, phenomenal illustrations. I've read it to his preschool class TWICE because it's such a hit. The hardcover edition is solid and great to read aloud -- would make a wonderful gift for a 3- or 4-year-old birthday.

Mable Norris Reese (Chesley) was my grandmother and I grew up with Jesse's story being a part of my family history. As a young girl, I met Jesse and "Aunt" Pearl when he was released from Chattahoochee and spent time with them before they moved to Green Cove Springs. Even with all that they had been through, they were the kindest, sweetest people I knew.After reading Gilbert's book, I'm horrified (but not surprised) at how much more there was to the story - I can certainly understand why my family would have censored so many things when talking to a young child. I still get chills thinking about how much my grandmother, grandfather, mom, Jesse, Aunt Pearl and Richard Graham went through to get Jesse's freedom.My grandmother would have been honored to have her story told by such a skilled and determined researcher and compelling storyteller as Gilbert King.

I read the entire book on the day it was published. Gilbert King did lengthy research and structured the story to keep the reader captivated. He made the scenes and people come alive ;it is a portrait of the worst in human nature and also the best.As a former southerner I remember the racism and prejudice which sickened me during those decades and therefore I can imagine the truth in this dark story.It’s a story with villains, heroes and innocents. I am glad that the author brought this story to light.I highly recommend this book.

There are a couple of important story threads in BENEATH A RUTHLESS SUN.However let's start at the beginning. Blanche Knowles, citrus baron Joe Knowles's wife, is raped in 1957, a Jim Crow year. She says it was a bushy-haired black manWillis McCall, the virulent racist sheriff of Lake County, Floridas rounds up every black man he can find. The two main suspects are Sam Wiley Odom, whose main crime seems to be his uppity attitude and Bubba Hawkins who happens to be related to Virgil W. Hawkins who had the audacity to apply to law school at the University of Florida.Then matters change. A white, mentally retarded man, Jesse Daniels, is arrested and promptly confesses, although he insists to his mother, his lawyers and everyone else he knows, he didn't do it. Now, why would a racist sheriff, who has gone so far as to murder black suspects, charge a white man with a crime the woman says a black man committed? She later changes her story, insisting it was so dark in the room she couldn't be sure who did it, but she identifies Jesse's voice. Remember the old saying, “Nothing is as it seems.”Jesse avoids a trial by being found mentally incompetent to stand trial, and he is sent to Chattahoochee, the Florida insane asylum where he spends fourteen years, lumped in with violent criminals since he was charged with rape. Jesse's mother and just about everybody else he knows insists he wouldn't even know how to commit rape, nor would he hurt a fly.Pearl Daniels finds a confidant in Newspaperwoman, Mabel Norris Reese who spends the next fourteen years trying to get Jesse out of Chattahoochee. She has evidence he didn't do it, but McCall and his henchman, county attorney, Gordon G. Odom Jr. won't even let Blanche see her son.So . . . will Jesse ever get out? Will Willis McCall ever pay for his murderous behavior. I have to say I wanted to see him skinned alive, boiled in oil, and drawn and quartered. This is not a novel; this stuff actually happened. Willis McCall made Bull Conner look like Mary Poppins.Oh, yeah, there's one more ingredient in this mud hole. Joe Knowles was a known ladies man. How does that enter into the picture and why did Blanche insist a white man raped her when she knew that wasn't true? These questions will keep you turning pages.

If this book does not make you angry, nothing will. One really needs to go back and read the first book about this lawless lawman and the havoc he brought on anyone that got in his way. Murder In The Grove is the first book and I am still loaning it out to friends that have not read it yet. Beneath A Ruthless Sun picks up the story of how one corrupt sheriff ran an entire county and literally got away with murder. This book and the one before it provides an interesting look at what can happen when good people do nothing.

Fascinating book that kept me turning the pages. And the astonishing thing is that the story is true! The outrageous behavior of above-the-law Sheriff Willis McCall kept reminding me of the notorious (and recently pardoned) Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Arpaio doesn't seem to have been a multiple murderer, like McCall, but he was another example of the public official who thinks he isn't governed by the law. And (also like McCall) who keeps getting re-elected by racist voters. The twists and turns of the narrative will keep you up past your bedtime. And may give you nightmares.

Beneath a Ruthless Sun is incredibly well-written. King expertly exposes another dark secret about race driven corruption in Lake County, Florida, and our hearts reach out to those victimized by McCall and Oldham, among others.If happy endings are lacking in this story, we can take comfort in the knowledge that history is more accurately told, and so those who may have “gotten away with it” will now be remembered for their cruelty and wrong doings versus the hero’s they claimed to be thanks to King’s effort.I highly recommend this book to readers of both fiction and nonfiction of justice, race, Florida’s history, heroic journalism, history of mental institutions, and anyone seeking the truth about Florida’s corruption, and those who fought against it.

There were certain sections, such as Chapter 7, that I did not relate to, as I did not go through those experiences in my own life. I have not been in the best of health for the last couple of years and so I decided to purchase this book for my daughter who I am very close to. I'm leaving it here in my house for her do that she can find the strength and courage to go on. I read the book and realized that I found it helpful to myself reminding me of the day my Mother passed on. It is a book that every women should have available to them because loosing our Mothers is one of the most painful thing that we must go through. I just love how the Writer opened her heart to share her own vulnerable feelings and experiences and her words of encouragement will surely help others to feel her live and compassion for others as they go through that same kind of loss. Great reading!

This was my life saver those first few weeks, it is easily read, to the point, very relevant in how it feels. I felt like she was writing this for me! I put notes and dates in my kindle version of this so I can go through it again and check on any progress I've made, or different feelings at anytime. If I met this Author in person, I'd just want to hug her and say Thank you, thank you, thank you...God Blessed me through you.

This is a very quick and helpful read for tough times. I wish I had this book 47 years ago! Maybe if I did, I wouldn't have struggled so much, but at 19 with a father who never addressed our grieving process, let alone his own, there never was true recovery for me until this past year. This is a book that can be read over and over whenever needed.

This book was far overpriced for something that took me about 20-30 minutes to read. Not really the supportive guide I was expecting. Felt like more of a short, extremely brief commiseration.

Havent Started reading Yet im pretty sure after my moms funeral friday 12/9 i will read it after i just wish it was more pages

I give three stars because it was encouraging but I need more details about the recovery. It does encourage me to find other ways to help me through my daily struggles a little more.

This book had a great beginning but its more like a pamphlet than a book. Not worth 12 dollars.
