Pinkney's language is delicious, worthy of reading and rereading as she creates a vivid picture of the placid family-filled life of 12-year-old Amira and then a life that is tragically devastated by the Janjaweed militia and Amira's escape to a dead-end refugee camp.I can't read realistic fiction that takes place in a real place that is still at war without wanting to know more and this might be an opportunity for students to do the same. I fell in love with Amira, her life, her losses, and her plight and immediately started researching the issues in this area of the world. To start, the refugee camp in the book - Kalma - still exists ten years after this story takes place and seems to be the permanent home of 130,000 displaced refugees. Schools for girls like Kalma have been started there. I also was intrigued by the details about Amira's life on a farm before the Janjaweed burned her home and village - the traditions, the foods, the ways of life--all so vivid because of the well written text. I'd like to read more about this as well.Back to Pinkney's text - it's just stunningly beautiful, filled with poetic, figurative language, written in narrative verse to help the reader access Amira's experience. Just flipping back through the book, I wanted to stop every few pages and read again. This book would be worthy of just enjoying reading, of studying for content, and of studying for language or as a mentor for writing.

 This is a deeply powerful book. Written in verse, we are right there with Amira on her journey through the hardships of her life in rural Sudan, and how one little gift helped her not just overcome them but honestly discover herself in the process. It covers a lot of situations not typically seen in middle grade books, but I think that just makes this book all the more valuable. Thank you Andrea Davis Pinkney for all the research you clearly put into this book for us! This book is in verse....and it's so lovely and heartbreaking at moments....so powerful. I gasped a few times....the poem "Fleeing" on page 121 was especially powerful....the line...."Each of us bears the heaviest weight of all,/anguish, unmovable,/like so many mud brick sacks." And her most prized possession is a twig...so impactful. I can't say enough...so good.

A poignant and powerful telling of the horrors of Darfur told from the POV of a twelve year old girl. It blew me away. I hope my 10 year old granddaughter understands this introduction to the sociology of the Sudan. I'm including the downloadable PDF educator's guide for her parents' use.

My students really enjoyed this novel, 5th graders from other countries, however the figurative language was so abundant that it made it somewhat difficult for them to understand on their own. Otherwise, beautifully written and kept their attention. A well enjoyed novel.

As a middle school English teacher I see this taught with Home of the Brave and or during a poetry unit. Vivid imagery lends itself to all kinds if literary study.

I ordered this book over the summer and then adopted it for my fifth and sixth-grade students. It is beautifully written and illustrated!

My 11 year old read through this book in less than a weeks time. She loved it and recommends it to all readers young and old.

I recently tested positive for Scleroderma by my primary doctor, so the month wait to see a rheumatologist was spent doing a ton of research. I happened to come across this book and quickly ordered it. Even though it arrived late and damaged, I read through it in 2 days. It is so scary getting a diagnosis of this type, but I now have so much hope that I can recover from this and be healthier than ever. I see a doctor this week that offers this protocol and I recommend to anyone that has received this diagnosis to get this book as quickly as possible. There are better alternatives than toxic drugs that don't even heal the body, only to create more health problems. I wish all of you warriors the best of luck. We can do this!

Antibiotic therapy saved my life. Had scleroderma and it is all but gone. I was given 3 to 5 years to live because it was so aggressive in me. That was in 2001. It's 2017.

I knew exactly what scleroderma is when I got my diagnosis. I'd suspected it for three and a half years. I had researched its symptoms. I new about its progression. I knew about my life expectancy. What I didn't know was how it was treated. Once I got my diagnosis, I researched all of the top clinics. I researched all of the medications they used, and their efficacy. I found out most of them have been proven to do nothing in clinical trials. I was really depressed. I felt that there were no options. Then, I found this book.I thought the title was cheesy. I thought the idea was too good to be true. I bought the book. I read the book. Henry Scammell wrote an easy to read, easy to understand history of how antibiotics came to be used to treat scleroderma. He explains that scleroderma starts because of a bacterial infection. He tells us about the research that has been done, and the way doctors treat with antibiotics. He also tells us the story of a real woman who was severely impacted by the disease and has made a full recovery -- and, by the way, as of today, January 2, 2010, is still healthy and scleroderma-free after nearly twenty years.This book exposed me to an approved treatment option that I found discussed no where else, and many rheumatologists don't even offer patients. It empowered me to take the next step, and start researching to find out if this worked for other people, who they are, how sick they were, how long they took the medication, how long they've been well, and if they'd had a recurrence. After doing my own research, I began looking for an experienced rheumatologist who had treated many scleroderma patients with antibiotics. I felt strongly that what Scammell explained about the bacterial vector for scleroderma was consistent with the history of my disease, and the treatment seemed valid, and relatively harmless compared to the other medications offered.After five months of antibiotic therapy, my symptoms are almost unnoticeable, I have energy, and feel great. I expect to continue my treatment until I am in remission. After a four mile hike up hill in September, my oldest son wrapped his arms around me and said, "Mom, I'm so proud of you for researching what you needed to do to get well, and sticking with it and doing it, so our family can have times like these." My husband thanks you, my children than you, and I thank you, Henry Scammell, wherever you are.

These essays allow me to absorb information better than most Wikipedia articles would since they are very well written and to the point.Third, the questions are ordered by length. For example, question nine is "Who were the three sons of Noah?" and question 89 is "What are the 12 main branches of the Indo-European language family?". You can slowly build up the number of items you remember in this way.I would recommend this book for any fan of trivia looking to carefully absorb new information.

This is a clever little volume which, for the most part, I enjoyed. Essentially, it is 101 questions (see the title for an example) with answers provided in short, generally engaging essays. For a triviophile like myself, it provided a lot of interesting stuff, though it's not really a book to be read straight through. Instead, taking a few questions a night should prevent information overload.In addition, the book does have a few weakness. First, there is the unavoidable one of the selection of questions. Depending on your tastes, some questions will likely be less interesting than others. Also, the authors have the occasional tendency to throw in a judgement with their answers which can rankle, especially in the religious realm. Finally, there is the feeling that some of the questions are a bit of a stretch, shaped to fit the format the authors have chosen.Still, I don't get the sense that the book is meant to be a reference work. It is meant to be an engaging exploration of a potpourri of interesting questions. In that respect, it works quite well.

This fun book contains a hundred and one lists organized by number. For example, the chapter known as "Four" includes the following: What are the four voyages of Lemuel Gulliver? What are the four conic sections? What are the four sections of a symphony orchestra? etc.Chapters are: Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen, Fourteen, Fifteen, Eighteen, Twenty and Twenty-Four. What makes the book more than just a quiz generator is the lengthy explanatory text, anywhere from three to eighteen pages. These pithy essays entertain and inform, and add greatly to the volume's enjoyment. Some questions are really obscure -- what were the five rivers of the classical underworld, anyway? -- but even the easier ones can leave you scratching your head and cursing your memory. Didn't I used to know all this stuff? Then, after you knock yourself on the head and shout "Of course!", you will have the pleasure of reading a well-written essay by a co-author or one of a small number of contributors.There is also a fourteen page suggested reading list, organized by subject, that includes music and URLs. Rounded out with a good index, this is very nicely done and lots of fun.

I love this book. It contains short, succinct explanations for questions about topics that you may have missed in your formal education. I've found it to be a great coffee table book. Not only does it lend itself to fun discussions with guests, it often gets picked-up when there's a spare moment with a glass of wine.

I currently own 3 copies so I can always have one on hand. Excellent choice for learned league, quizbowl, or trivia aficionados! Trivia geeks, rejoice!

The book itself is in find condition, however I thought I would be getting a book about the Seven Wonders of the World but it has only a small portion about the wonders. Most of the book is about other "7's".

I ended up donating this book, it wasn't what I expected. fast shipping, and a great price.

The first one was the Chicken Parm. It has always been one of my favorite recipes, but I didn’t eat it much because of the grease. However, this recipe uses a lot less oil and tasted just like the real thing, without all the guilt. I know that I am going to keep using this recipe for sure.There are other great recipes in this book that I want to try. However, I had to make my way to the desserts section. There is something about frying or “air frying” desserts that does something to me. I am a huge fan of S’mores, and the fact that I can make this dish in the air fryer really appealed to me.I highly recommend this cookbook for anyone with an air fryer. It provides great tips, as well as recipes that I will continue to use over and over again.

Many many errors in this book. Pages 107, 108, 109 indicate slicing beets 1/8 inch thick. There are no beets listed in the ingredients. Many grammatical errors. Uses British weight indicators (gram) on some recipes without explanations for conversions. Refers to "castor" sugar (also British) when "granulated" sugar would have been the appropriate. Many Americans would have no idea what castor sugar is. Then there is the problem with a single letter just appearing in a sentence or as on page 56, words are just missing,"top with left of tomato". Quite sure the author meant "left over". This book is going back.

A must buy air fryer book!Review:This book is a winner! A very catchy designed book cover I do have to say! That was the first thing I noticed! All the recipes in this book seem to be very simple and easy to follow. There are also a large variety of different recipes to choose from. I was surprise to see that some of the more fancy style recipes can be made in an air fryer. I am very happy with this purchase and can't wait to dig deep into this book to show my wife that I can cook! Thanks :)

Having followed some of this true story in the newspapers I was interested to read the whole so was delighted to find the book on eKindle. Growing up and always having pets I am a sucker for books about animals (especially those with happy ends!) and found this interesting as the storyline and its setting were unusual, happening in South America. I admire the author's stubborness with the numerous difficulties he had to overcome before the outcome and applaud his human kindness toward a fellow non-humanbeing. I read it all in one go and suspect others will, too. A very enjoyable book.

I was amazed and delighted by this book. Arthur is a wonderful animal, so stoic - from the moment he laid eyes on Mikael, that was it. Mikael Lindnord was his pack leader and Arthur was determined not to let him get out of his sight.I love animals and am an advocate, so all stories about dogs, cats et al, are rapidly reaching my kindle. Arthur is a keeper and I am so happy that he is safe and loved in Sweden with his forever family.

This book is a pleasant, true story about a not-so-pleasant extreme race that brought a stray Ecuadorian dog into the life of Mikael Lindnord, a Swedish adventure racer. The story describes an arduous trip with three other team members that tests the stamina of these elite rough terrain racers. The first part of the book told by Lindnord in a friendly casual style describes his background and introduction to the extreme sport with plenty of technical details. The reader learns about the intense training, planning, and packing that must occur before the race begins and the incredible level of trust that must exist among team members.Well into this particular race and well into the book, a stray dog appears and bonds with Lindnord. The dog named Arthur by Lindnord attaches himself to him and won't leave no matter how hard the going gets, and that's where the story takes off. This isn't the book for those looking for a great literary read. The story starts off slowly and some of the details are repetitive and of interest only to others in extreme sports. Animal lovers, however, especially dog lovers, will be drawn to Arthur's story. Those who love extreme sports will also appreciate the book.

A touching, feel-good story of a stray dog in Ecuador, Arthur, who chose to follow a Swedish adventure racing team as they completed their grueling challenges such as mountain climbing, kayaking, and hiking through the jungle. The story follows the race, the team leader's fight to adopt Arthur and bring him back to Sweden, and Arthur's life in his new home. Also sheds light on the plight of stray dogs in many third world countries, where there are no laws against animal cruelty. A wonderful read for anyone who loves dogs.

I enjoyed Arthur. I read several news stories describing Arthur's adventure with the team and I was delighted to read the story. The fact that Mikael was not a dog lover and had never owned (or been owned by a dog) made the story even more heartfelt. Mikael's love for Arthur (a feeling many of us can understand), his determination to bring him home to be part of his family and all of the people who pitched in to support his effort makes a truly compelling story.....I loved it. I was not particularly interested in the portion of the story before Arthur made his appearance, but that's me.

This retelling of a grueling trek by a Swedish adventure racing team is insightful and inspiring. In addition to surviving their race through the jungles of South America, the team befriends a mangy, but adorable, dog. In the end, the teams saves the dog. But, as is so often the case in these animal/people encounters, it is the dog who becomes the quiet hero and ultimately saves the human. Thank you, Arthur. Thank you, Mikael, for sharing your story.

Precious story. This dog is a winner as is the human who rescues him. It's not terribly well written but I excused that as maybe a translation problem from Swedish to English. The story, however, comes through as does the struggle to win the race and then again to bring Arthur home. Loved it.

Loved every minute of it. Amazing story. Could not put it down and read it in one go! I followed the story when it happened but absolutely loved the book.
