The author was well succeed about to show and explain the physics of hydrologic process. The entire volume is full of examples and illustrations which help so much the reader to follow the reasoning from the concept to the mathematical formulation to represent it.

these two book were a gift to a graduate Masters student. He is reading both, said if was exactly as he wanted.

Excellent teaching resource. I have never seen a book that explains hydrological equations and the variables within them as effectively as this book does. There are plenty of example problems and explainations. The author also explains what methods can be used to measure the variables within the book. I highly recommend this book for anyone teaching a university level hydrology course.

I read some of the factual data to him at night and bought the supplies for the experiments and he has taken it upon himself to create the cup phones, gumdrop tower, and more. The supplies are not difficult to get and not very expensive and most of the experiments can be done easily by the kids themselves.

As stated by the other reviewers, the book is packed with numerous ideas and suggestions leading to better photos. However, the discussion is all directed towards the author's special area of photography: fashion. For those who have this specialty, this is an invaluable guide. But how useful is the book for those who take very different kinds of photos? I did a quick (and rather arbitrary analysis) of the projects to see how match of the discussion could be transferred to other types of subject matter. My judgment was that 20 (of the 52) projects could be adapted by those shooting any subject matter. Twelve more might be useful with some further work, and 20 seemed remote from any field outside of fashion. Others may very well make different judgements about where to place each assignment. The conclusion seems to stand, however: the direct usefulness of this volume will depend upon the details of the subject matter at which you are directing your camera. All photographers, however, can appreciate in general terms the kind of analyses being done in the book even if not directly related to their work.

Do you stay within the lines? Or are you the type who see lines as mere guide lines and venture beyond them? If so then this book is for you. It is for the person who has a decent understanding of how a camera works and can control lighting, since most of the examples shown require taking your camera off the Professional mode (P). What makes this book interesting is seeing the world through Lindsay eyes and each image has an impression of her heart on them. So while you may copy her style, you must venture away from them and discover your own style. To that end this book is highly recommended. To help you control lighting situations "better" I also recommend Lindsay's other book "Shooting in Sh*tty light".

I've watched several Creative Live instructional videos by Lindsay Adler on studio lighting and post processing in Photoshop. This book is something else. It's a book to stimulate your creative juices. She looks at photos by other modern fashion and beauty photographers and explains how she creates new, original photos in a similar style. It makes you want to get out your camera and try it yourself. It can send you off in an entirely new direction.

So pleased with this book. Lindsay shares her own inspirations, makes suggestions and teaches step by step how she created images. She shares links of other artists and professionals to further reference each chapter. The book is well written and is exactly what I hoped it would be. I have the kindle version and do not find it confusing at all. This book is worth far beyond 5 stars!

This book is full of creative, practical exercises for all skill levels. As a photographer always on the lookout for more shooters to follow, I especially love that she references a handful of photographers to check out that relate to each exercise. Many of these exercises are fundamental, timeless practices that will outlive whatever current trends happen to be. This book should not only be taught to every new student, but any veteran photographer will also learn more than a few things.

I purchased this book last year for myself and for a friend in hopes of improving our photography. Most of the projects were very engaging, including some of the more challenging processing assignments in the later chapters. Lindsay Adler's writing/teaching style is very down to earth and her instructions are generally easy to follow. Both my friend and I looked forward to each week's challenge and to see how we each interpreted the assignments. I would definitely recommend running through the challenges with another person because it helps keep you motivated. And, bottom line, your photography is likely to improve.

We bought both his books, if your on the fence, just check out the youtube videos and you'll see that this book is worth it!

Having seen one of Lindsay's courses on Creative Live, I was drawn to her bubbly personality and great teaching style. The challenges in her book are great to continually stretch your abilities as a photographer and learn new techniques.

Dr. Ian Billinghurst has a diverse educational background and a varied professional career including that of Nutritionist, Agricultural Scientist, Veterinary Surgeon, Author, Lecturer, Nutritional Consultant and Acupuncturist. His first book on raw feeding, Give Your Dog a Bone, was published in 1993 and has sold more than 100,000 copies. When starting a raw diet with your dog I think its important to read ALL the info out there. This is one of the books out there that is most popular. I read it, and took a few things from it, but ultimately feed how I feel is best (I dont do veggies). This book and quite a few others helped me gain the confidence to finally switch from kibble to raw, and its was the best thing I ever did for my dogs. Dogaware.com is a great site for reliable info as well.

Wow what a great source of information for raw and barf diets . I feed all my puppies this way now and have seen a great amount of good . I feed them at first with dog foods like blue etc I think I went through about 6 different brand and still my puppies had Diarrhea and vomiting allergies and vet visits . I now have solid poops 2 times a day ,no vomiting an.d haven't seen a vet in a month. so if looking for a better option in feeding this is a great start also look into forms and groups. Truly the perfect book just as told, it's exactly what dogs ARE designed to eat for great health.My dog and relatives dogs have 'much' better health since recently starting this Barf diet. Some are old with cancer, arthritis, bowel problems, and in one healthy skinny younger dog a refusal to eat kibble. This book explains things so well, "very" easy to read, gives the 'whys' and 'how to-s', and much information you need. Dr. Billinghurst, veterinarian, is many years educated on dogs, his life's work...I saw his website with raw products and saw he gives online consultations for your dogs."Raw" - "meaty bones" are critical to dogs health I learned and will not hurt them, they would us humans but not dogs who are built differently. COOKED BONES ARE DANGEROUS!! Some raw beef bones 'not' good for many dogs, they're too HARD, but Raw chicken/duck wings and some others are good, also for older/sick dogs. Finicky dogs hooked on any commercial foods may need mincing raw 'meaty' bones in blender/grinder, or other tricks. Exactly what to feed and how is in the book in detail. There is even a section on proper vegetarian feeding and why its better than commercial cooked foods. Author gives all types of diets/ingredients and the pros and cons of each one. Book is one of best investments I've made, and cheap.

The book is extremely informative, and seems logical for the most part. The author gets a little too technical at times and is extremely repetitive. I don't know if this was done intentionally to stress the points or if just trying to make the book longer. I did like the overall message of the book, follow its recommendations and your dog will thank you profusely as it ages in a graceful manner with many degenerative diseases eliminated.

This book is worth every dollar, has a ton of very useful information that is more than worth the read if you have a doggy of your own that you want sticking around for a while. It's a bit biased, but I've transitioned my dog over to his new diet and he is healthier than ever!

I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking of feeding their dog a raw diet. Dr. Billinghurst provides subtantial information on the benefits of feeding raw over processed food and makes it easy to understand what is required to properly feed your dog for a longer and healthier life. Most raw feeders consider this book their primary reference. It is not an easy find, especially at a reasonable price, and I was thoroughly delighted to find it available at Amazon. The condition of the book was exactly as described and the transaction was simple and speedy.

excellent one; honestly does help many health problems. my one problem wasn't the book; that my dog had to have anything but chicken. that does tend to get expensive however the dog responded well health wise. (was also consulting a vet who could go holistic when a dog's health/ immune system would respond better.)

I bought this book recently after reading "The Fourth State of Matter" as part of a graduate writing course in memoir. It was my second reading of the essay, which chronicles Beard's experience of losing several co-workers in a shooting at the University of Iowa. After reading the negative reviews here, I couldn't understand (having at that point only read the one essay)how it could garner the criticism it did. As a student of writing, I look closely at how writers craft their work to see what techniques I can employ in my own writing.Beard knows her stuff. Her essays are extremely poetic. A scene at her grandfather's funeral includes this observation, "I'm too big to sit on a lap, my legs are stiff, and now my heart has a grandpa in it." Beard uses lyrical structure fluidly in many of these essays. "Cousins" runs two parallel narratives. One of Beard and her cousin, the other of their mothers, who are sisters. The result is a reinforced understanding of the closeness between the women. She is a sensory writer, and employs unusual images that are vivid and unique. In a scene in "Cousins" Beard describes herself in utero as "the size of a cocktail shrimp," in another essay, the rivers are the color of bourbon.If you are looking for a lurid, sensationalized, book that tells all the dark dirty secrets of a writer as s/he overcomes a particular obstacle, I would look elsewhere. This book does not follow the traditional arc of a coming of age tale. It is not one book length narrative, but 12 separate essays. They are not all as captivating in intensity as "The Fourth State of Matter." But thank goodness life is not always that painful. I admire the alchemy though, of taking a life and rendering its moments and phases as artfully as she has done in this book.

"My mother is sewing a button on my father's shirt while he's still wearing it. 'I was having this terrible feeling,' she says, 'that she'd be this forty-year-old woman, going around telling people that we took her d-o-l-l away from her.' She leans down to bite off the thread. My father tests his new button and it works perfectly. 'In three days she won't remember she even knew that d-o-l-l,' he predicts."But of course Beard remembers, and tells, in this 1998 non-linear collection of linked personal essays. They're coming-of-age essays, where growing up is as likely to occur at thirty as at thirteen or three. Each age is rendered perfectly, as are the characters and the 1970s-80s period details of small-town Midwest.Among the boys of Beard's youth are Hal, that beloved d-o-l-l her mother's oldest sister bullies her mother into throwing away; teenage boys who mostly ignore her at backwoods parties; her father who drinks and disappears for weeks at a time; Eric: boyfriend, husband...; and a school-shooter where Beard works in the University of Iowa physics department. There are girls, too -- aunts and cousins; her older, nemesis sister; her mother who smokes on every page; a lifelong best friend she consults while writing these essays.I love these people and their settings; I've read Beard's novel IN ZANESVILLE, and the first half feels exactly like these essays. I love her writing and look so forward to more.

I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of autobiographical short stories. It was fun to read about someone who grew up in the same era that I did. My favorite was "The Family Hour" which was so reminiscent of the dinner table at my house back in the 60's and 70's that I had to read it aloud to my husband and sister. This collection is not all laughs, however; there are sad,poignant,and even frightening pieces that stay with you well after you put down the book. Beard's topics transcend time and place. In fact, "The Fourth State of Matter" is so timely that I saw a similar event on the news yesterday. If you're looking for a collection of essays worth your while, you've found it in "The Boys of My Youth."

Like a flashback, Jo Ann Beard's collection of short stories takes you back in time. My favorite story is "Cousins" and is about two best-friend cousins. At an outdoor Eric Clapton concert the girls ingest a mild hallucinogen and discover pieces of their childhood in the quilt spread on the ground. One girl feels her halter top is coming off. When she looks at her cousin she is "cupping clouds." Moments later her cousin says, "The clouds are cupping me now," and she wants someone to "Get them off." Beard writes, "A guy on the blanket next to us tries to hand me a joint. I can't take it because I'm holding my chest. He looks at me, looks at Wendell balled up on the ground, and nods knowingly. 'Bummer,' he proclaims." With an exquisite eye for detail and lots of humor, Jo Ann Beard inspires memories of laughter and friendship and the heartache of youth that is never matched in later life. Upon completion of this book, you will find yourself thanking Jo Ann Beard for taking you back to that magical place in time. "The Boys of My Youth" is worth reading and re-reading and sharing with your best friends.

This book is written so eloquently that it makes simple and mundane things seem fascinating. I thouroughly enjoyed ever page of it! I found myself relating to so much of the memories the author wrote about - childhood, family, relationships, friendship. This book was also fantastic in that it is a string of essays elegently bound together by the narrator's consciousness. I was captivated by the details the author incorporated into her storytelling.The version of this book that I read also has a few pages of anther one of her novels, "Zanesville", at the end. I am definitely purchasing that book now too!
