I love the "Who Was" and "Who Is" collection for my nine year old son. They are so informative and my child reads them before bed every night. This book, however, I would not purchase UNLESS you feel comfortable having to explain to your child why on earth there is a section in this book explaining that our most beloved childhood author had an interest in naked lady books. What are you thinking with this book? Who is the audience? Adults????? Obviously this is a book for kids. Why is this detail included? Why is no thought given to preserving the innocence of our children? Now, I had to spend ten minutes explaining this to my son and it is something he will never get out of his head. What a disappointment and complete lack of judgement by everyone involved in creating this book.

I wish this series had been around when I was a kid! So far, I have purchased Jim Henson, Dr. Seuss, George Lucas, The Beatles and Walt Disney for my son. These books are a great way for me to introduce the people who have always inspired me, to my own children. I believe that reading about different creative talents throughout history is not only a great way for kids to learn but also a great way to inspire them. We always have great conversations when we discuss the people from these books because we teach each other new things.

Read this book with with my eight year old daughter. Learned some fascinating facts about Dr. Seuss and really enjoyed the book.

ANDREW SCHULMAN is the Medical Musician/Critical Care at Berkshire Medical Center and the first Certified Medical Musician admitted as a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He is the founder and artistic director of the Abaca String Band, which has performed throughout the United States, and also a solo guitarist who has appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall in London, the White House, and the Improv Comedy Club, among many others. Disclaimer: I have been friends with Andrew for a long time. We lost touch about 12 years ago and then we reconnected on Facebook in late 2009 - just months after Andrew had surfaced from his medical crisis, as I would later discover. It was business as usual discussing music, dogs, guitar, life, etc., until I read read posts by Andrew discussing the details of the crisis. Needless to say, I had no idea that this had happened and was a bit shocked and reminded just how tenuous the thread between life and death can be.I am glad that his wife Wendy on a whim decided to see if music could get through to Andrew during the crisis. Fate had it that the piece Andrew heard on his iPod when she put the earbud in Andrew's ear during the crisis had strong associations in his life, and surprisingly - or not so really! - it brought him back to this world.That being said, this book not only presents the gripping drama surrounding the crisis, it also provides a very deep background on the history of the effects of music on the brain, with Andrew's experiences as a medical musician being the center of focus. It is presented in prose worthy of the late Oliver Sacks, but uniquely in Andrew's voice. This book is also testament to how associations to music embedded in one's mind can be extremely powerful.My only complaint was that the book was far too short! I sincerely hope Andrew continues his exploration into the connection between the brain and music, since this is fertile ground in terms of groundbreaking research across cultural barriers.

Waking the Spirit is simply wonderful! It’s the perfect antidote to today’s depressing political scene, is full of hope, and inspirational. Andrew Schulman is a professional guitarist who finds himself in an induced coma in the SICU at Beth Israel Hospital in New York, the most desperately ill patient in the unit. As each hour elapses, he worsens and is given almost no chance of survival…..until his wife reaches into her handbag and finds his iPod programmed with his favorite music, beginning with Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion, his most treasured favorite. From the moment the ear buds relay Bach’s music to him, his condition begins to improve. He....and the medical staff in the SICU....credit music with saving his life and to give thanks, Andrew returns to the unit at Beth Israel to become a medical musician and to play for both patients and staff 3 days a week. In Waking the Spirit he recounts his experiences there and the life changing effect it has had upon him, helping his healing continue to this day. In the book’s afterward, Dr. Marvin A. McMillen continues with his own personal story, reinforcing Andrew’s account. There was a time when music was considered unorthodox medicine, but that is changing, as Schulman, McMillan and the other doctors who comment illustrate. Andrew’s story was the subject of a PBS feature which you might want to watch via youTube. The highest of recommendations.

I loved this book. Andrew is a musician, but he is also a poet of the human soul. He opened up an world for me that made me proud to me be human. A world where Music can reach places in the brain and the heart of a comatose patient and in fortunate cases give them the will and the path to live.I found some of the music that he referenced including Bernstein's recording of the St. Matthew Passion and understood Andrew’s world. I had drifted away from music and was reminded how much it had touched me in the past. I am fortunately healthy but perhaps Andrew has also brought music back into my life. A beautiful book, a wonderful author - with luck you will be touched and moved as I was.

This is an excellent book showing just how our brains work even when we are unconscious and what power music has over our well-being. I wish every medical worker was fully trained in this reality. Perhaps there would be fewer adverse reactions caused by physicians & surgeons listening to their own kind of music while performing their treatments. The music preferred by the patient should be the primary consideration. If a surgeon needs to listen to hard rock in order to perform his or her surgical procedures, I want to know that beforehand so I can find a different surgeon!

I do this kind of work myself and am always interested in learning of another person's experience with it. So much of this type of activity, even with training, seems to be based on intuition and this author has developed his intuition to a very high degree, perhaps as a result of his own experiences with serious health issues (which are detailed in the book). I'm sure many people with my own interest will read this book but I would really recommend it for anybody in the medical field.

This book was recommended by a friend who does dance therapy. The author was in the ICU, critically ill, and finally his wife played a very moving piece of music and it prompted his recovery. After that, he returned to the ICU weekly to play for patients. It was well-written and was very interesting from a medical standpoint (I'm a physician) as well as from the human standpoint. Very moving and informational at the same time.

I love this book for so many reasons. I had already discovered the power of music when I started to use it during meditations (Composer ~ Audiomachine). I started to feel much better but also some physical issues I had started to heal.This book was a great validation to the healing power of music. The story was so fascinating. Each scene in the book was not only interesting but throughout the book, you learned so much. Definitely a great read, an inspiring story and wonderfully written!

From the minute I started reading this book I could not put it down. With many friends in the medical field who are also musicians I felt obliged to send multiple copies around the country. The nerd in all of us is sated by the references to studies that provide scientific evidence of what Mr. Schulman experiences regularly in the ICU. This book will make the perfect gift for anyone working in an ICU anywhere. It should not be taken lightly! Kudos to Mr. Schulman and his team for bringing this information to the main stream and making it so readable and interesting for the layman.

King cites the negative image many socially conservative black men have of homosexuality as an obstacle to those men being honest with their partners and themselves about who they are. Among the more intriguing elements of On the Down Low are the peculiar approaches men on the DL have to the sexual act, seeking a strictly physical sexual relationship with their secret male partners while remaining in more traditional arrangements with women. Having spent more than 20 years living the dual life of the down low, King is familiar with all the personal, psychological, social, and even religious implications of living on the down low and the risks this lifestyle poses to the spread of HIV and AIDS. He recalls his struggle with self-gratification, the fear of exposure, and the responsibility to his family before coming to the conclusion that he owed his family honesty. King also cites respect for black women as a motive for disclosing his secret, though the reader might question how much respect he had for 20 years. But that's part of King's point in his disclosure, that men on the down low and the black community itself, with little tolerance of homosexuality, need to be more honest and open on issues of sexuality. If you are a black woman who is looking to find out what the signs of down low men are this book is not for you! I feel he knows more than what he is telling and is holding back. Every chapter I read I felt he was holding back on information! It was more about a book of him bragging about his different sexual encounters with men. He is very proud of it.

I thought that this book was going to be a book of sexual escapades had by the writer. It's the reason that I did not read it when it first came out. I decided to read it have reading the reviews for the authors newest book. I felt I should read this one first to ensure I did not miss anything. I must say I was deaf wrong. The book was for women and how to deal with, identify and protect themselves from risk associated with down low men. It was very well written. I read in a day.

I liked the book. I'm a guy and I was interested in knowing more about being on the DL. But I don't know exactly what the message J.L. King was trying to give. He didn't tell men NOT to be on the DL, he did warn females about them. I guess he just was the messenger. I don't think it will change any black male from having sex with another man if he wants to. It's not going to bring honesty. I can't imagine any male confessing prior to or before doing this. All women cannot insist that their men put on a condom before sex. So-things will probably remain the same. Bottom line???.... Know your partner and be prepared to accept the consequence if you come up HIV+. When I was young they called VD "the gift that keeps on giving", but AIDS is not a gift. We need better morals but people don't seem to want that either.

When J.L. King went on the Oprah Winfrey show to talk about the lives of "straight" black men who sleep with men, he opened the eyes of a lot of African-American women who had been living in a utopia. It was difficult for a lot of women to believe that their husbands/boyfriends/lovers could be sleeping with a man one minute and come home and sleep with them the next. Trust Oprah to open the eyes of so many people with this controversial topic, and J.L. King was just the vessel necessary to do so.Unfortunately, while this topic is important, controversial, and in need of recognition, J.L. King's book "On the Down Low" isn't necessarily the best forum for it. First of all, the point he is trying to make is diminished by his own life story. King takes the defensive for most of the story making it clear to his audience that for 25 years he lived the life that he is condemning others for, but for some reason it's different for him since he's now seen the error of his ways. Second of all, he's pious to the point of being preachy. I am all for religion and good for him for letting his faith guide him, but the fact that God will forgive him for his sins is no excuse for living a lie and hurting those around him. Thirdly, the book isn't that well written and as a whole was kind of a bore. I applaud King for being willing to do what others wouldn't have the guts to, but I think perhaps there was too big a rush to get this book out and therefore the writing suffered.As a whole, this book covers an important topic and for that it's worth reading. However, as literature it's not so great.

Unbelievable story! It is scary that this happens in real life. It happens to so many people. Thanks to the author for bringing awareness. Very well written and articulated to real life.

This book is a MUST READ for every woman, regardless of your relationship status. Much respect to J.L. King for his transparency, brutal honesty and willingness to expose what is frequently a well hidden secret. This insight could very well save your life!

This was one of the best books I have read in a while. It was an awesome book because of all the information that was contained in it. It was hard at times to put it down. I kinda new something like this sub-culture existed but I never new it had a name nor did I know how extensive this sub-culture. The book was scary because of all the women that are being subjected to the HIV virus because of men who have no respect, or care for the women they are potenially infecting, or let alone this self. I would recommend this book for all women of color to read.

I'll start by saying that I bought this book to learn...not everything, but to learn something. I believe the author does a good job explaining the DL behavior, so that the reader can get the gist of what it is, and why men choose to live that lifestyle. I am not reviewing (like some people have been), to give my opinion of the DL lifestyle, or give my take on the issue. I do not want to interpret the book for you, but just let you know that the book is an easy read, it seems sincere, and you will definitely learn something from it. I think the author provides some good clues to women, about how you can identify a man on the DL. He does just enough to open up about his personal situation and what he was thinking when he was living a double life. I believe the author is fair to straight men, by letting women know that most men are not engaging in the behavior. I believe a lot of men on the DL have given this book poor reviews because it exposes their actions and gives women the heads-up. A lot of women are giving the book bad reviews because they are angry at the author for being who he is, his past behavior, and the fact that he has been lucrative selling books on the subject of his dirty deeds. In sum, I suggest that you do not listen to the negative reviews, because you will learn something, and you will be entertained. Give this one a read, I recommend it!!
